There are prints of the original versions available. But it's more that Lucas doesn't feel those cuts represent his vision of Star Wars. So doesn't feel the need to spend money and time and manpower to remaster them for release. Because they're not worth it in his eyes.

I'm not sure what a "true" fan is compared to an "untrue" fan, but congratulations for being the former!

So because you don't give a crap, then no one else should give a crap either.

Thanks, but no thanks.

Sarcasm is hard to read on the internet. My "true fan" comment was in reference to claims made by several posters in this thread that there are certain "rules" that qualify a "true" Star Wars fan.

I'm not saying others shouldn't give a crap. I'm saying many fans today are spoiled. I grew up watching Beta tapes and movies on bad cable channels. And then moved up the the VHS era for many, many years and thats the way I experienced star wars for a long time..on VHS. so for me today 720p is good enough for now. I'm not going to die on my grave if I don't get 1080p thats all i'm saying.

This is a blu ray forum, you best be crazy about the format to be here. I think you are mistaken about how many will watch these films in 1080i/p. HD TVs have gotten quite inexpensive and Star Wars will boost not just in blu ray sales, but also audio/video hardware sales as well. I understand you aren't an audio/video-phile, but understand that the VAST majority of people in this forum are. That is why you are encountering such feedback. If you don't care about the video/audio presentation of the blu rays but wish to discuss Star Wars, then there are other forums on the web you can participate in. I am not trying to be mean to you, but feel you might be out of your element here.

I'm no mastering expert, but isn't it possible that the black crush issue ocurred in the process of 'extracting' the PAL/NTSC dvd-masters from the HD-master. Or are they actually perfect clones, just with different resolutions?
Just hoping hoping this can fixed, without any major side effects.

Personally cannot wait for this release...if it's anything as exhaustive as the Alien Anthology then how can anyone dissapointed. It does seem a little pointless to be arguing over screenshots and web stills...Lucas won't screw this up the backlash would be too great.
Episodes 1, 2 and 4 will certainly not differ in their running time. I know this for sure. So I guess there are no scenes added to those movies. I don´t know about the other three.

I´m also certain that Lucas will not screw this release up. I don´t think he has to worry about the backlash because that will come anyway... perfect release or not.

I think even on this forum most people don't understand that bluray is about more than having a nice, sharp image on a 40-inch HDTV while you are sitting 10 feet away from it. Bluray is the first consumer format that makes it possible to project a video image on a 12 foot screen that truly looks like a 35mm film print.

I think this is the divide that causes the confusion and disagreements about transfer quality most of the time. Those of us who have such setups know what bluray is capable of and want that type of quality consistently. Others don't know the difference and tell us to quick nitpicking. Sorry, not gonna happen.

Im going to make damn sure that I get an HDMI cable for my SONY BRAVIA for this release..This will be the only bluray that I have seen in 1080p.

I am discussing the bluray release of star wars..therefore I can continue to post here, if I just wanted to talk star wars I wouldn't be here.

And yes, i'm not a video/audio-phile. I enjoy films at home, but my first priority is to watch them at the theater...home entertainment is my last resort.

I wonder how many blu-ray consumers out there even understand the full capabilities of the format? Just think about the number of times you've been standing in Blockbuster or Best Buy or wherever and somebody says, "Blu-ray is the same as dvd. How stupid!"

I get a kick out of this thread every afternoon. It reminds of bluray v. hddvd war and how heated those forums could get. Star Wars seems to just have that effect on people, everyone wants to treat this movie series like their adopted child.

Ok, fair enough. Just explaining why your comments have gotten such a 'reaction' is all. I don't agree with you, as I care very much about the transfer of the film. To me, that is MUCH more important than any changes Lucas has made to the films as it has a direct impact as to WHY I buy movies on this format.

I'd like to see the AOTC duel extended as well, but I'm not expecting it to happen.

I too grew up watching the OT on VHS and even episode I on VHS ... I have very fond memories of the movies playing thru automaticly rewinding and replaying all night long ; I understand your mentality because my girlfriend could care less if she is watching a movie on the worst quality possible, however I switched to blu because I have spent a lot of money to have the best possible video and audio. Having said that I hope that this release rocks my Home Theater setup because that's how I wanna enjoy Star Wars. Honestly as long as the lightsabers are fixed I can be happy with this release.

This should go in the other thread...But what about all the other artists involved in helping Lucas create Star Wars? Others helped him with the story, writing, direction, editing, etc...

I hope that my hard earned money goes towards the best presentation of GL's fantasy on Blu-ray. As a lifelong fan, I want the best that he can do...not the best he's willing to give us. Is it so wrong to expect Lucasfilm to deliver the goods? I'm not even talking about the different versions of the films...I'm simply talking about best A/V presentation for all six films (in their current state) possible on Blu-ray. The technology is there...but is his heart in it?

I was 16 years old when Ep.II released, and I remember all the Star Wars nerds in band sitting down freaking about this specific scene. The first time I saw that duel I thought it was the most awesome thing of all time. Then the more you sit and watch it you can see how it looks like a stunt double with Christopher Lee's face painted over swinging his lightsaber around while a digitally added character tries to match the movements while simultaneously trying to look over the top cool. To me it just comes apart at the seams the more you look at it.

I'm not a technical expert or audiophile, but even I have noticed the major problems with the DVDs, that means with the 2004 master. I'm not a Lucas hater, I also like the prequels (still, I think OT is better) and I like the SE edition (altough I also want the OUT to be released). Things that I have noticed in 2004 master that are bad and destroyed my experience:

The lighsabres - they change colors, sometimes they are too short, sometimes too long. Sometimes there is a missing "haze" around them or they are too thin. That bothers me, because it's inconsistent with the prequels. In prequels they are beatiful. Comparison (don't forget that it is supposed to be same lightsabre on this pictures (Anakins lightsabre was given to Luke!:

Why couldn't they fix the lightsabres to match those in the prequels? I mean, even in fanedits made by one person and non profit, they look much better. Check this:
11:18

The color timing - It was fine in 1997. In 2004 master, even I noticed that there something wrong. I don't care for green Dagobah or blue Hoth. But what's distract from experience is this pinkish tint. On all prequels the colors are OK (maybe exept for the DVD master from TPM, but with new master it is gone). It's like watching a film with rosa glasses - terrible.

Crushed blacks - The image is too black, many things from the enviroment are just not visible in the background.

The sound mix - the sound effects are too LOUD! In many places (especially in New Hope) the music is very hard to hear or almost impossible. Especially in attack on the DS or escape with the Millenium Falcon. On the other side, in the prequels, everything is all right. You can hear the effects, the music, just everything. Also, in 1997 5.1 mix from OT, everything was fine, just like in the prequels. Why was it so screwed up in 2004? I don't know.

How can someone even say there nothing wrong with the 2004 master? It's horrible, when you compare it to beatiful, on technical side prequels.
