What insults? the specsavers thing was a joke (maybe it doesn't translate outside the Uk then?). All i was stating was facts. you are seeing something that isn't there. They are the same. ILM have done nothing to the sabers in the ESB shots apart from the Reds beings shiftered more towards pink. And i've never claimed to be a "know-all" on the subject, but the similarities in the sabers is obvious to anyone

Mr. Watts will be fine.

If anyone can honestly say that the Battle of Yavin is better in it's '77 form than it is in it's '04 form, then I don't know what to say...

The pink sabre explained?

Or, has it always been a little bit on the pink side and better quality video (DVD & Blu Ray) makes it more noticeable?

1977 original!

Who the hell knows anymore?

I can't keep it straight.

As long as Yoda is still a puppet in the Episodes V and VI, I don't think any change to the films will bother me.

I saw the new trailer from the yahoo uk site and here are my thoughts. Very happy to see the saber cross from ROTJ fixed with the corrected colors red and green. The extra stuff from the archives looks like it will be great to see. And also the deleted footage of han from the cantina looks like it will be great to see. Overall I'm getting more and more excited for the September 16th release date and getting the blu-ray box set.

Antoher thing that really bothered me, that will be even more noticeable on the Blu Ray, is Obi Wans beard and hair in AOTC. When they did the pickups, they stuck a fake beard on to Ewan McGregor which was bad enough on the DVD (It stuck out a mile) alongside the ever changing length and density of mullett. The worst example was when he was in the elevator with Anakin talking about falling into a pit of gundarks or something.

God help us, this will be much, much worse than any pink lightsabre in high definition.

Fake beard and wig

Real beard

Just dreadful for a multi million pound film.

1977 original!
I have a Darth Vader cardboard cut out and the saber is purple, very similar to that picture only with a white core.

It bothered me too. But while they can't do anything about that, the same can't be said about lightsabers, and the rest.

I'm trying to keep the faith that the transfers for some of the original trilogy shots in the trailer are used from the old 2004 transfers, due to availability. The Star Trek Blu-rays had to do the same thing for their trailers and special features.

Has anyone took note that there's only 45 deleted scenes on this release. If you subtract the ones already released on the prequel DVDs, it's not that many for the original trilogy.

Personally I think this whole lightsaber color correction thing is a load of bollocks.

Judging by these captures taken from the screening of an original 1977(with the 81' crawl spliced on) I.B technicolor print that was screened for free at the senator theater in Baltimore (in July of last year)----Vader's saber always had a pinkish tinge:

Agreed, any bright white light passing through a red object will appear pinkish.

Since his saber is supposed to be red, and the core is supposed to be white, there will inevitably be a pink-ness to it. White is desaturation, and desaturated red turns into pink. There is no way to avoid it if you want those pretty white cores.

I think people are getting a little confused as to what the argument is about the pink lightsabers. It has nothing to do with the cores of the sabers. The glows have changed colour ever since 2004. Instead of the correct original red glow they have become pink/ magenta. The original colours of Vaders saber was the same as the red sabers in the prequels.

I think the 2004 DVD's pink saber is faithful to the original:

It seems like in some scenes (very few) in ROTJ the Vader's saber is ok

And here I increased the gamma to 1.50

I can assure you that the technicolour print does not have that pink tint in the whites as it looks in the tecnicolor picture as the white balance on the camera is out. And Vaders saber is red in the technicolor print. Plus, the saber glow in the 2004 screenshot you posted isn't pink. The worse problems with the new pink/ magenta sabers is in ESB & ROTJ. ANH doesn't suffer so much

Ah, that makes more sense now. We have to hope the trailers are the product of the pre-blu amends then. They have mentioned colour matching sabres with the prequels have they not?

Judging by the color of his lightsaber in the 2nd pic from the Blu-Ray trailer, apparently the saga is being reimagined again and now Mace Windu is Darth Vader.

One thing those pictures do show is the blacks appear very uncrushed on the blu ray.

With all respect Ady, taking the 1997 version as the original template of what the saber colours should have looked like is wrong.

Why not take the 77/81' Technicolor print as the barometer for measuring what the original sabers looked like:
