Not necessarily. Just because a director has done other movies that are reference quality doesn't mean that the director couldn't want the movie to have a certain look (which could keep it from being reference quality). Gladiator is a different story, but still.

Definitely, yes. However, I can see how something like Howard the Duck would probably have less of a budget for restoration/remastering than Gladiator. There's obviously a point where the work costs more than will ever be made back through sales for some titles. I think the point of contention for many is that a high profile title like Gladiator should have been afforded better treatment. At least that's my frustration with it. There are many catalog titles that aren't "big" titles like Gladiator that have had more care put into them.

It isn't "does every blu-ray have to be reference quality"... not every blu-ray needs to be reference quality, but every BD should look like FILM and have a certain film-like quality. the issue with this release is DNR and EE, right? They need to re-release Gladiator that hasn't been touched by this crappy means of "improvement".

I wonder if the transfer would have been acceptable if HD-DVD was still around. Ok, it is better than the DVD versions. Is that all that Blu-ray is aiming for? Some of the comments are indeed over the top, but this is no ordinary title. Hence, the passionate response from fans. Get with it folks!

Why can't we all just get along? He he he....Didn't something similar happen with the release of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines? Warner Brothers released it in Dec 2007, however, it was presented in 1080i instead of 1080p. The following year, Feb 2008, it was re-released in 1080p. Ok, i don't wanna start another thread comparing the difference between 1080i and 1080p, I'm just saying that the problem was fixed by the movie studio. Maybe they'll fix Gladiator too?

For me, I just don't see the point in continuing to complain about this transfer on a message board! Send e-mails and complaints to people that matter. All I do is read your posts and think to myself, "Wow! You're only the 100th person to say the same exact thing. For God's sake, move along!"

Do you honestly think anyone at Paramount is reading this thread? If so, I have a nice bridge I'd like to sell you. |

+1 People will buy this regardless of the critics. And Paramount won't care so long as they're selling the product.

And if it is released again, people will buy that as well. Why? Simply because it is Gladiator and they want the best available product on the market.

It wont be re-released for many years....way too many titles from Paramount to get out there. Plus this is a LOADED disc anyway.

I think it's comments like this that make Penton-Man reply the way he's done in regard to this title. Gladiator's PQ is NOT poor...AT ALL. In fact it's not even close to poor. Do we all wish the entire movie looked as good as the Extended Edition scenes? Yes. We all know the theatrical version isn't reference quality. Everyone knows it; even Penton. But let's not go overboard here to the point where we're calling it "poor".

I rented it from Blockbuster. Watched the extended version. The edge enhancement is quite noticeable on my 52" Bravia. I like to see BDs that look more like film. This one definitely doesn't to me.
Although the overall PQ is better than my upscaled my DVD release of Gladiator, I won't be adding this BD to my collection. |
