Just received my copy of Gladiator from amazon.com today. I can confirm there was no '2 disc set' text above the Paramount logo, and the disc inner ring has 'B1R2' at the end. Looks to be the remastered edition.

when you click on the middle picture you can move your mouse on the blue section of the back-cover, there it says preuve du nouveau master

not sure if that garantuees anything tough... it seems to be the same cover and steelbook as the Dutch release (http://www.freerecordshop.be/films/g...-5050582773859)

I compared the original Sapphire and the remastered edition and its a HUGE difference! I'm glad they fixed it because the original release was embarrassing to watch.

Looks like I got the original version once again. I was hoping that I would get the remastered but AMZ just sent me the same. I'll send this back for the $19.99 I spent on it. The "2 disc-set" is above the Paramount logo.

Boy, that really sucks. I am still holding buying the movie from Amazon until they run out of the first release. I don't know how long this is gonna take

I went to Wal mart to pick this up and they wouldn't price match their online price of 19.96. In store it was $25. I decided to wait until I can find it for less then $20.

Paramount is doing the exchange program still as far as I know, so you could just do that if you happened to get the old one. That is if you want the movie now.

I ordered Gladiator last week from Amazon. It came in perfect condition with a slipcover and it was the remastered version.

I received the remastered version from Amazon.com too! Hurray! The slipcover was perfect condition but the crappy plastic case saw to it that the inlay was quickly spoiled :-(

Not cool. Sorry man. Mine was one of the rare cases (nowadays) that came in great shape.

I see that some people are getting the remastered version from Amazon and some aren't. I still don't want to place the order until I am certain 100% that Amazon only ships the remastered version.

I live in Saudi Arabia, so I cannot risk getting the first issue and send it back, which would cost me a fortune and I don't think Paramount would do an "Exchange Program" outside the US and Canada. I know there is one in the UK. but I have a Region A PS3.

How long do I have to wait?

I live in the States and I don't want to run the same risk. That has less to do with shipping costs and more to do with not wanting to deal with the hassle.

I don't understand why the original issue ones are still in circulation.

I'd really like to pick up this movie but I will continue to wait until I know will be getting the remastered version for sure.

From Paramount's press release on the exchange program:

Quote:
The studio admits that the first edition had edge enhancement and digital video noise reduction, but it does not acknowledge that the product was defective.

Rather, it posits that some consumers "may have preferential issues with some of the technical DVNR (digital video noise reduction) and EE (edge enhancement) choices made in the original source transfer, and so would prefer to exchange it for one that addresses those preferences in a different manner. While the version that we originally distributed was of the highest quality, some enthusiasts may prefer to view it without the Edge Enhancement and DVNR implemented as standard process in bringing the film to hi-def. This new master resolves those issues."

If you really are adamant about buying it online, Axel Music.com lists it with the notation of remastered. Otherwise, just look for a yellow UPC in stores and you will be fine.

I honestly don't think that anyone prefers the old release over the remastered one. What's the point of correcting something and making it better if you're still keeping the bad one?

I compared the old with the remastered and there is a HUGE difference. I would've easily bought the first issue if I knew that no remastered version was ever coming.

Paramount really failed me on this one. I have most, if not all of Sapphire editions (BraveHeart, Saving Private Ryan, America Beauty) and they're all erfect except for AB, but it was still passable.

I don't know how long I can wait. If I was in the US, I would've just gone to any retail store and got the remastered one.

I know that was their statement and not yours so this isn't directed at you but I call BS on a statement like that. If it wasn't defective in the first place there would be no reason to create a new master and a second edition.

A lot of movies are remastered and unfortunately for 99.9% of these cases, consumers have to pay for the newly remastered release.

Case in point:

Lawrence of Arabia

First DVD release was poorly mastered and restored. The Superbit DVD release used a newly restored print and full remastered. Consumers did not get a free replacement on Sony's dime.

Ever After

The first DVD release was an MPEG2 encode taken from the Laserdisc master which means it is letterboxed non-anamorphic. The re-issued DVD that featured both widescreen and fullscreen versions of the film presents the film in a remastered anamorphic widescreen version. Consumers did not get a free replacement on Fox's dime.

Let The Right One In

The first Blu-ray Discs and DVDs featured new English subtitles that differed greatly from the theatrical subtitles. New BDs and DVDs were mastered with the original theatrical subtitles and again consumers had to buy the remastered copy with their own money.

The point is... films will be remastered and/or restored multiple times to continue their lifespan. Sometimes a remastering job is poorly done like Predator: Ultimate Hunter Edition or the source is limited/stylized resulting in what can be viewed as a poor remastering/restoration like Army of Darkness. The Sound of Music, Casablanca, Ghostbusters, and the first twenty James Bond films have all been restored/remastered multiple times since their theatrical releases and everytime, they continue to sell on home video.
