So enough with all this crap about it being unwatchable and trying to influence others decisions. I will admit it could have been better but it is nowhere near as bad as a lot of people are saying.
+1. I said that plenty of times. I'm sure some are just picking a few scenes to watch from.

As stated before, there's room for improvement, and if there's another release in the future. I'll get it. The current release is well worth the $17.99 at BB when you get Braveheart.

I haven't watched it yet but that would be par for the course. The Dark Knight = Horrible POS, Baraka = Horrible garbage, etc.. Yet they looked good on my 60" 1080p set (not perfect but good).. There is no middle ground for a lot of people. I can only imagine these people are just miserable in the real world, not having perfect girlfriends/wifes, dogs, cars.. I'm glad I don't live life that way.

two each its own,but you and others have paid paramount for a job not well done.i wonder if you would do the same if it was your bathroom or a paint job on a car.Mmmm.
And you can throw in an average transfer DVd and turn on 120hz and J6P jaws will drop in awe on PQ.
Don't believe me, go to any major retailer that has a 40" or larger running 120hz and a DVD and you usually see people standing around in awe on the PQ.

J6P isn't stupid but they can tell if it looks better than DVD, which is the key selling point of blu-ray advertisement. 6x the resoultion, not 6x better PQ.

I really want to see this on a display where it is deemed terrible. I guess most don't have something like that.

I ain't keeping score but I'll be honest that more opinions are favorable and folks enjoyed watching it as I continue reading. I'm not saying they are overwhelming positive and this product could not be better but the money they spent they felt was worth it.

Pixar movies are entirely animated. Some PQ anomalies arise when CGI effects are used in footage...it effectively flattens the picture and digital tools are used in an attempt to make the CGI and live portions of the picture seamless. All of us have noticed that scenes heavy in CGI lack the pristine detail and definition of reference quality BDs.

To sum it all up

Apparently the PQ of Gladiator doesnt look so hot...could have been much better for a Sapphire release.

Some ppl dont give a crap and are happy to have it while others aint diggin' it so much and want to send a message to Paramount by not buying it.

Opinions are vast and this thread has ran its course.

Give me an 'amen' to locking it down?

Tvine2000,

Sorry but I'm losing track of all the posts in the discussion. I really don't think j6p would be unhappy with lots of BDs to tell the truth. I'm not using j6p per se to justify a price for this particular product they like. Heck like I said in a prior post, lots of folks here don't seem to deem this terrible, are enjoying viewing it, is better than the upconverted SD DVD I tried comparisons for the first 45 minutes or so which is the worst quality of the movie, they ain't j6p and have no problem spending the money on it.

Is the product not as good as it could be? Yes, BUT I bet folks bought some that cost more and don't seem as happy with those.

Dont mean to be antagonistic, but what about Benjamin Button, Band of Brothers, LOST, Bladerunner, I Robot, The Incredible Hulk, Transformers,King Kong, Iron Man (which you gave a 5 for PQ)? I mean, the list is pretty darn long where CGI blended with film footage has been deemed reference.

I dont believe that this is a justifiable reason for Gladiator to have poor PQ.

It looked fabulous in the theater.

120 pages for this title. Too bad the BD can't justify the press... I read the review and wanted to know what brand-bew is.

A sub-consious typo to "boo" the title, perhaps?

It's a well written review. He addresses the shortcomings directly and openly and honestly. He clearly points out that it is well below excellent and avoids any politics, which is cool, because he is charged with reviewing the BD, not the studio.

I've skimmed over this entire thread hoping to hear of a reply from Paramount that anyone received. Anyone heard if they have the slightest care about this? I've waited since probably 2001 to see Gladiator in "high definition" or just better quality than the DVD was. Long time to wait for something that doesn't seem to live up to what I had hoped. And also one of my favorite films. I'm debating myself whether I should go ahead and put it in my Netflix queue or just settle for something less than top quality and stroll into Best Buy. Honestly, I may not ever have noticed anything had I never read reviews, but like some of you, I would not purchase it just out of principle.

I am GUESSING that the first place, if any, we hear anything about Paramounts stance, will be at The Digital Bits. So far, nada.

I really doubt Paramount will say or do anything other than count the proceeds of all the sales from Gladiator on Blu-ray.

You would think they would have to say something to put the kibosh on this PR nightmare they are having.

If any of you think Paramount is going to do anything you are sadly mistaken. Every site other than the digital bits is giving this release high praise. That coupled along with the masses that are not Audio/Video geeks will be more than happy with this release. 10,000 or so A/V snobs (no offense) is going to change that. If you want a Picture that is much better than an upconverted DVD you should get this disc. If not then wait until the next medium comes along.
