When it comes to the pq why should we have to put all that effort into it. Its hi-def why should we have to even worry about that. I just feel like since the format war ended they don't have to put out there best work anymore. If i remember right during the war blu-ray had more crap titles that first year then hd dvd, then again blu-ray wasn't ready for prime time, but was winning anyways. |

Apparently so! I think the issue is Paramount promoting the Sapphire Editions as Top of Line and Gladiator clearly did not get that treatment while Braveheart did. I will use an example in your analogy. You go out for that steak dinner order a New York Strip and they serve you a Flank steak. Totally different ball game. |

I think this is a false premise. Not all movies are going to look the same. Gladiator had heavy CGI in most scenes and that has an impact on PQ. Braveheart did not have CGI. Do the math.

Hahahaha are you kidding me? Have you not seen the difference between the theatrical footage and the extended footage?

See the qoute by Mr. Hunt below: "it's Universal that controls the Gladiator assets for DreamWorks - not Paramount), decided to reuse the digital master of older, sub-par HD transfer. Likely it was state of the art for its day, but obviously it's a far cry from the quality of new HD transfers done today. One of the biggest problems is that until fairly recently, video mastering engineers were still applying edge-enhancement to their digital masters knowing that they were going to be used ultimately for standard-definition DVD release, and also analog VHS and laserdisc. It took the mastering community a long time to break the habit. In this Gladiator transfer, you can see edge-enhancement in the image. It's also clear that the master has been digitally-filtered to reduce the haloing and other artifacts - the signs of DNR are not hard to miss." |

As far as folks saying it is slightly better than the SD DVD DTS ES set, I already have gone back and forth for about the first 40 minutes of the movie (arguably the worst scenes for PQ) using two BD players hooked up to different HDMI ports on my Samsung 40" display and watched about 10 minutes at a time upconverted SD DVD to the BD. No contest! I even used the BD player I felt was better for upconversion than the other while both are pretty close for BD playback quality. If J6P had watched as well, he would have been patting himself on the back for getting the BD at a good cost versus what he had and has lived with. And no one should really compare Braveheart to Gladiator, check post 2349. Last edited by robertc88; 09-03-2009 at 06:16 PM. |

I am sorry guys, I must be a horrible human being because I bought and enjoyed Gladiator on Blu!
![]() I know it wasn't perfect (Braveheart was pretty much perfect) but it was still perfectly fine. Some people here are making it sound like it is unwatchable but I have watched it twice and I enjoyed it both times! ![]() So enough with all this crap about it being unwatchable and trying to influence others decisions. I will admit it could have been better but it is nowhere near as bad as a lot of people are saying. |
