I checked out (for the first time) AVSforum and they say the silliest things about the same topic. Whats going on over there? I do not mean any disrespect but it's like they are still in HD DVD denial world. They were bashing the same screen shots. Oh well.

This is really typical for them, which is why I don't look over there any more. They take a screen cap, blow it up several times, look for the most microscopic imperfection, and then go on and on about it. It's pretty maddening.

Indeed, the mentality from quite a few is It's perfect or "it's garbage" so if any shot on Gladiator isn't perfect it must fall into the "it's garbage" category.. Granted the standards change for when a HD DVD is reviewed where DNR, EE, artifacts are looked over much more easily.

And of course, just stick to DVD upconverted

This happens on every major release. The Dark Knight was completely shredded there, Barakas (crying DNR, despite the people who worked on the transfer verifying none was used) as well. Heck they were zooming in on Transformers at 800% then circling "DNR"..

My god HD DVD has been dead for a year and half now. I never would have thought people would still cling to this. I was an HD DVD owner and I got screwed when Warner Bros stopped supporting it.

I got over it and bought a Blu-Ray player and I am really happy with it. Life goes on. Bunch of whinners

That's ridiculous. I like the AVS reviews of Blu-Rays by Ralph Potts, but it sure seems like it was a good thing I never bothered to register on their forums.

lolz. I've got a friend who frequents AVForums and all I can say is that apart from Casino Royale he has something negative to say. On Monsters Inc he said "its a shame its got some aliasing issues". Are you kidding me? That movie is so sharp you could cut yourself by touching the screen.

I think some people at AVS just spout the jargon without really knowing what they are referring to. People need to fit sometimes I guess, that place is a zoo.

I noticed significant edge enhancement in all the scenes I watched tonight too. Especially halo'ing around Russel Crowe's head in almost every scene he's in. It's very noticeable.

Ralph is the man! A shame he got recruited by such a HD DVD fanatical forum.

Well certainly that isn't good news. I really feel though if I end up renting it I'd still purchase it rather quickly thereafter. The SD DVD PQ isn't all that great especially through the opening chapters of the movie which I like. I've always yearned for better with those scenes especially.

The DVDBeaver screencap of the opening scene looks pretty darned impressive compared with the DVD screencaps, and you'd have to look pretty hard to see any edge-enhancement there. (If it really is there, that is.) All of the Blu screencaps looked terrific, though, and the enthusiasm of the usually-reliable reviewer there was palpable. I do have to say, however, that I did notice a bit of EE on ONE of the screencaps there (a bit of haloing around the lower part of someone's head), but I'll reserve judgment until I get my own copy and see it on my own screen. (And I will not be looking at it using a magnifying glass or a microscope! )

LOL the weird thing is while I can tell the difference between HD and SD, I normally don't notice stuff like EE, DNR or haloing or even artifacting.

I'm kind of an image nazi, and I don't really see all that much edge enhancement on Gladiator from those shots.

That's just me.

Braveheart, though, looks pretty damn stunning.

That character is pancake makeup'd all to hell (on purpose). Notice the wig and the overdone rouge? He's supposed to be a bit poncy

I still can see some DNR and EE but cannot call it excessive. I wish I cannot see any DNR or EE on blu-rays.

I think it's more that he is supposed to look like an ancient stage performer, but yeah, it looks more like makeup than DNR. The shots of Richard Harris, for instance, are loaded with fine detail
