Wow. Their heads would probably explode if they saw something that actually lived up to the potential of the format. Looks like the comments are already ripping it apart.

IGN is just a horrible horrible place. Thats like asking my 3rd cousin how the pq is on the Star Wars trilogy bluray set. And he'll tell you too, because he has it. Of course he's a pathological liar but thats beside the point.

Damn, somebody beat me to it. IGN gave me a good laugh at least. They are consistently horrible for BD reviews.

I wonder how many people go by IGN reviews as "gospel knowledge" or even as a good source.

Even if one person does, that's too many...

Yeah same here I was gonna post on this too.

IGN is HORRIBLE at reviewing dvds/blu-rays for PQ and SQ. I don't know what they have there systems hooked up with but they apparently fail to see some stuff that everyone else on the internet does.

I am 95% sure that IGN is accepting money from movie studios and game studios for that matter to post positive reviews on some otherwise shoddy work.

When thinking of a 10/10 for PQ I think of movies that look like these:

Pirates Trilogy
I, Robot
I Am Legend
Casino Royale
Transformers
Man on Fire
Zodiac
Tropic Thunder
3:10 to Yuma
Live Free or Die Hard
Rambo
King Kong
No Country for Old Men
The Incredible Hulk

There could be many other reasons as well: Perhaps they don't have a good setup, configuration is not right, seating distance is not right for the screen ...

Also 9/10 for both movies is too low. IMO both deserve atleast 10/10 especially Braveheart.

Given the recent news………

Are you (and the other unhappy PQ activists who are cross-posting across several forums on the internet) going to now plan a frontal assault or are you going to try to surround ‘em (i.e. Paramount Studios)?

Or perhaps, maybe you should go door to door thru neighborhoods to Blu-ray enthusiasts………starting with this guy (quoted below), who I would bet money has been watching movies at home in a high-end theater set-up for years in every thinkable home media incarnation (analog TV, VHS, Laser disc, DVD, Blu-ray) for as long as you have been living on this earth……or at least, out of the embrynonic stage of development.

Using my ISF calibrated Sim2 Lumis / HOST / ISCO III anamorphic lens combo sourcing my Denon 3800 BD player, I think I have this Blu Ray disc looking as good as it can possibly look on a very large screen.

Video 7.5/10: (I viewed the extended version). Now mind you I watched this a distance of 16' from my 14' wide scope screen. I have to tell you the worst video was in the opening credits when the movie title, Gladiator', appeared out of the dust. The dust itself look blocky and muddy. Terrible. I thought, "oh crap! That's not a good start". After that, I found this Blu Ray disc to be mostly very, very good, clean and sharp. Regarding the initial battle scene, yes, EE abounded and arrows / spears looked really bad... but only for split seconds as they were moving and the scenes with them were but a second or two. Things were too fast to get too annoyed (this is where screen captures over-emphasize the impact of EE, etc - the capture shows the ugliness in stop motion which is not how it is shown in the disc). Frankly, my biggest complaints in this scene were some loss of detail in the low APL scenes and loss of contrast (but the DVD was problematic here as well). This scene was clearly the least impressive of the entire 2 hour plus disc. But it was more than watchable. It still looked like Blu Ray. Most all of the movie looked great with excellent detail in close ups and though the color palate was muted and steely blue, images were still great! The intricacies for the gowns and leather looked great. I hardly noticed EE throughout. Yes, the DNR was apparent in certain scenes more than others but it was hardly offensive as it was so rarely noticed. Nor the film grain in various long views.

Overall, this is not a great transfer but it takes away little from the movie itself and despite what many say, it did not take away from the movie at all. This release is every bit Blu Ray. The picture's extra resolution is vastly apparent on my large screen. The DVD is plain unwatchable on my large screen - yet very watchable on my 58" plasma. The extended scenes were clearly a step up in detail but still the blacks were not as deep as a reference disc might have. Yes, there are technical failures but, to me, not enough to avoid this classic. Could it be better? Yes but the overall quality is there and this releases kills the DVD. Compared to the DVD, the Blu Ray disc is a 10/10! I was frankly more disappointed with the soundtrack.

I would recommend this disc to any viewer with front projection as the huge increase in resolution over the DVD cannot be ignored. It far supersedes the DNR and EE. My overall criticisms are similar to those with any other poor transfer. I think many here are extra disappointed with this disc as it is such a marquis title. And I agree with that. This deserved better. However, I am simply at a loss for all the controversy of the film. I thought it was going to be ugliness every few minutes. It is simply not the case. I enjoyed the movie all the way through and EE/DNR did not upset my viewing experience. The overall quality is very good (not excellent) and you will enjoy the movie only noticing a few aberrations throughout and only in a few scenes.

I refuse to buy a double-dip blu-ray for one of my favorite movies of all time, when it's not even done properly. especially when the DVD was one of the best-looking DVD's I have in my collection!

I'll wait for a re-release, then I WILL buy it! It's so sad really, one of few movies I'm actually willing to double-dip to blu-ray, and they manage to screw it up

That said, how did someone here get it for $7 or something like that? I know there's some kind of get $10 off both Braveheart and Gladiator at BestBuy, but I believe that only comes down to something like $20 per movie For $7 I might reconsider...
