after the $10 instant rebate, the $10 mail in rebate, and reward zone coupons i had, i spent $4 on this movie.

if they re-release it, i'll proably just give my original copy to my dad.

The remaster trend is hilarious. It would be nice if they offer a trade-in program, but I am not expecting it. To be honest, the one I really want a trade-in program for is Gangs of New York. I paid $25 for that one whereas I paid $9 for Gladiator thanks to rebates.

I will buy this as long as its upgrade worthy. If it doesn't look that much better than the one out now then there's no need to.

With the release being so close to the first one, I doubt that many average consumers will double dip. This would be more of an attempt to cash in on the movie if the releases were much farther apart and the new one included a bunch of new special features as a true anniversary edition. I still don't see how people can think a couple of bad releases being re-released is the start of a trend when so many catalog releases have been stellar. People can think what they want though.

The cost of creating and releasing a remastered version would probably be greater than the profit they would receive from people buying it specifically to replace the old version.
This was a major QC blunder, I doubt it was a calculated one.

You are getting ahead of yourself and jumping to conclusions because a handful of movies have had to be remastered and re-released. For every Gladiator, there's a bunch of Bravehearts.
Of course there is no trend, and there will probably never be a "discernible" trend. We can probably expect, every now and then, that a high profile release will come out which is far below what the public is expecting, PQ wise. To which the rejects at the studio will rather unsurprisingly announce a re-release. They win, only occasionally and not discernibly, and we lose.

I understand what you are saying and I agree. The point I was trying to make was in regards to people freaking out thinking there is a trend brewing just because a couple of movies lately have been/are being re-released.

I really hope there'll be a disc replacement program for the film disc. Maybe a HUGE rebate for those who purchased the Sapphire Series release such as myself would be suitable? I'd rather have a disc replacement program in effect in comparison to a rebate.

ok guys here are the guidelines to buying quality blus..

1. If the transfer is bad with several reports of it being bad... a rerelease is inevitable.

2. If the disk does not include lossless audio... a rerelease is inevitable.

3. If it's a barebones release missing the dvd extras... a rerelease is inevitable.

4. If it's a very successful film and uses mpeg2 codec... a rerelease is inevitable.

5. If the movies 20th or 25th anniversary is soon and the last release was at least 2 years from said anniversary... a rerelease is inevitable.

Follow these guidelines and you'll avoid suprise double dips.

I paid nothing for this movie, so I'll get the re-release.

$10 from Amazon, got the $10 mail in rebate.

Sweet :]

do you think it would be asking to much if THIS go around ,the audio for the remastered bluray could have the 6.1 soundmix that is on the DVD version (DTS-ES) ??? come on Paramount, we aren't asking for the moon.

I paid $23 for the first release. They better have an exchange program or a lot of people will be pissed (including yours truly).

Live and learn I guess.

The quality control people responsible for this should be fired.
I think that any blu-ray.com member should be the last to complain for buying this, you'd have to be under a rock knowing that the Bluray transfer was flawed from the get go.

the QC people should be fired but only after having their eyes stabbed with a rusty nail.

I'm not complaining that I bought this release, but it would be nice if I didn't have to pay for the same movie again, given the fact that Paramount f'ed up in the first place.

^ oh no I completely agree, it's ballsey of Paramount to think that folk would pay again for a corrected copy of the film - to not do a replacement program would be a shitty move on Paramount's part.

Tell that to Disney. They just did a re-release for Gangs of New York, which had an even worse transfer than Gladiator. No replacement program has been announced, nor is one expected to be announced for Gangs of New York. And as with all Disney titles, the original disc and the remastered disc are not cheap by any means.

I'm not saying its right or wrong, but I'm curious, if you buy a perfectly working disc of a movie you don't like, will the studio replace it with a better movie? What entitles you to a replacement in this situation? Sony replaced the Fifth Element but that's about the only precedent I know of.

They really haven't "remastered" many releases. They've re-packaged plenty, but not done restorations (which I feel if you're going to do it do it right the first time).

Not the only precedent technically, although probably the only one based on the quality of the transfer. Disney replaced the Pirates of the Caribbean discs due to a framing issue (chopped off heads) during certain parts of the transfer. That was more of a technical glitch though.
