I'll have to agree there and if Gladiator isn't up to snuff, it will throw into doubt my future possible purchases of Sapphire films, especially ones I'm on the fence with.

I'm not aware that there were any screenshots posted by Blu-ray.com members for them to analyze. Of course they would support their own forum member, as we support our own forum members and thank them for their contributions to these discussions.

I thank you for your references to the AVSForum as it has given me plenty of entertainment for today, as I would have been terribly bored otherwise.

On a sidenote, I sometimes get the impression that people on this forum seem to be inclined to slightly overcompensate for the negative extremism shown on the AVS forum.

Granted a ton of blu-ray fans left AVS during the format war and a lot of the people present now are former HD DVD fans. Still I've read some comments that actually make sense. You have to be carefully when you say something indicating all like "not a single AVS member". Here is one:

Now I know it's a must buy...

All the experts here said it will look like s**t and cancelled their orders.
When I pop it in, I will have the lowest expectations... ever... and then I will be very pleased that it doesn't suck nearly as bad as the dvd "mush fest" I have now...

I never see it on cable so I don't have to worry about seeing it and getting the feeling it was better on tv than BD .

This worked for me with True Romance and TGTBTU, i figure it'll work here too.

Something is funky...thats why I never trust screenshots. I say this because, on my display, those Braveheart screenshots look like dog manure...way worse than the Gladiator shots.

I'm waiting till I see it in motion.

It is indeed marketing BS, but they still should at least put a lot of effort into the particular release. They have for the most part, including a ton of special features. In the end though, unlike some people saying Gladiator's release is a travesty, I'm usually happy as long as a movie on BD looks better than the DVD. The studio has to really screw it up for me to pass on something I really want. I respect people wanting movies like Gladiator to look great (it's pretty much a modern classic), but I still think it's a great package overall even with the PQ problems. Great AQ and an insane amount of special features still makes it a pretty good package.

LOL....but seriously. There are no details in the faces. The Gladiator shots have much more detail.

I am not saying the discs will be this way, I am saying screenshots have no use for judging Blu-ray picture quality.

Yet the main reason for purchasing a Blu-ray - the FILM - does not get the best treatment. All the extra's in the world can't erase that.

I think those shots look fabulous. Indeed, they don't have the in-your-face amazing detail of the Gladiator shots, but... manure? Puhleaze... This is a different film and it has a different look, which shows in the screenshots.

Every movie should have Edward James Olmos in it.

When no one can see details in his face, all can agree on DNR

...so if I buy gladiator for 26.99, Is my wife gonna watch it with me and say "what the heck, why did we just spend 26.99 on this? It looks just like the DVD."

I call this the "wife test"

She did that when I blind bought the Punisher. Granted, this is a different movie, different price range, and different expectations. But she could tell.

With all of the smoke that people are blowin, I'm afeared it may not pass my most heralded of testing systems.

But the film itself is the main reason for purchasing a movie in the first place. If it's one of your favorite movies, why not buy it unless it honestly doesn't look any better than the DVD? There have been some slight disappointments on some of my favorite movies, but that didn't keep me from buying them.

I remember when the AVS folks bashed 'Baraka' when it first came out on Blu. Now it's in "Tier 0" (Reference Quality) of their PQ list.

Gosh, I sure opened a can of worms by "admitting" that I used screenshots from the dreaded AVS forum. May I point out that they don't have that site's opinions attached to them? Those shots can very well speak for themselves, so back on-topic please.

But because it's one of my favorite movies is the exact reason why I'm not satisfied with it "just" being better than the DVD. It should be be stellar and in this case we have the screenshots of the extended scenes to point out that the whole thing could have been just that. I'm just having a hard time understanding the need to make excuses for the rather obvious deficiencies here.
