We will all hear something from Paramount when we hear something. Moaning and groaning about it will not make it happen any faster, that's for sure.

To exchange! I want the new disc to look exactly like my old one!

That was just a disc authoring problem that was easily correctable. This is a completely different transfer so I'd imagine that's why it will take longer. Hopefully it will be available sooner rather than later, though.

If I weren't so distracted by all of the upcoming awesomeness in the coming weeks on Blu, I'd probably be a little impatient, too. But as long as I don't have to pay anything for an exchange, I'm fine with waiting.

IMPRESSIV!!!
Night and day differences. Grass, flowers, and textures are all noticeably sharper on the newly remastered version. Look at the shot with Proximo at the Colosseum and you'll notice that the EE that is present in the 2009 version is nowhere to be found on the 2010 version.

Those screenshots are night and day, especially the Proximo shot. The detail, contrast, color, and overall sense of depth is vastly improved. Ironically many of the newer images seem to look less grainy, maybe what I am seeing as grain in the older image are compression artifacts? As this is a movie from 2000 I would expect to see a very fine film grain (modern film stocks are very fine grained as compared to older movies for the most part), and it is evident in the new 4k scan.

The new version has more grain, but it's considerably smaller and tighter (because there is more resolution now) as a result of the transfer being properly done on modern equipment.

This is also kind of "admittance" that they screwed up. They could have simply waited a few more months and released a double dip it, announcing, “We have better transfer/mastering equipment/hardware/software now”.

What we should do is wait to buy a Blu-ray Disc, especially a catalog title, until after it's reviewed. Most of us bought the first one on "day one" because we're excited/anxious/eager. No one made us buy it.

That said, it's nice that Paramount is owning up to their mistake.

Like I said, they could have waited a year and released it then, not offering an exchange. Most of us would have probably bought it after seeing how good it looks.

While all of the recent discussion has turned to the remaster and Paramount's exchange program, this is still the "Gladiator Blu-ray Discussion Thread" and Gladiator is a good movie, just a bad disc.

Wow, those shots show precisely how awful the first release really was. Paramount should be commended for doing the right thing and offering up a new transfer, but at the same time they should be ashamed for allowing that original piece of s**t in the first place.
