Came upon THIS informative review over at AVF

Quote:
Well, even knowing and really looking for the "weird disappearing arrows and spears", I watched "GLADIATOR" last night.

The opening of the movie is certainly rougher (I noted some 'banding' over the opening synopsis, credits) and the battle scene is a bit lower quality than the rest. BUT... Ridley Scott is a "stylistic" filmmaker and when I put in the DVD straight afterwards it looked "woeful"!

There is NO doubt that this new BD release has issues, but... it TROUNCES the DVD versions into the ground. The detail is superb and the motion is fluid and lifelike. The colours are also great. I did NOT notice any disappearing spears and arrows whilst actually watching the film play in motion (I do not doubt that this issue is present though). You just can't see it when you are playing the movie.

The sound is speactacular and the extras and great too.

The film is so good that after about 30 mins of really looking for faults I got caught up in the story and loved every minute.

I'm am sure that this BD is not perfect, but it is currently the best way to watch this movie. If Universal or Dreamworks recalls or rereleses the movie than I'm gonna get it... but.. for now. This BD is the best that "GLADIATOR" has ever looked IMHO.

Ok folks. I just nitpicked at some of those scenes (what a nerd ) being pointed out as having flaws and visual defects. For those who don't believe, it is true... unfortunately.

I went through the frame by frame process and noticed it. I will say that in most cases you will not notice it while in motion, but the fireball off the catapult being shown around the thread is real. 2 fireballs being launched disappear and reappear during mid-air. It looks more like bad CGI to be honest.

The arrows are still visible, but the flames are not lit on all the arrows.

To be honest, had I not been looking I would not have noticed, but once you know it is there, it cannot be avoided.

It seems though that this type of flaw is maximized during the beginning of the film. The dense forest and foggy conditions. I could see why this type of software would cause these types of errors.

The film does look a bit washed out and viewing the extended version, the increase in clarity on those scenes is noticeable. Kind of like the IMAX scenes on TDK.

At first I didn't pay attention to any of those issues, not even the Edge Enhancement. But nitpicking at those things has proven most claims to be true. Honestly, had I been aware of this beforehand I would have probably held off until a better price than what I paid for would have been available.
$20 or less should be a fair price to pay, anything above that is not worthy.

Another thing I noticed, the transfer is obviously not made from a new master. There is noticeable dirt and marks visible throughout.

That's the price I paid for being the first one to own both Braveheart and Gladiator. Sorry that I could not have been more detailed initially, I was too much into the fact that both of these epics were available in HD and was able to bypass all the nerdiness. I'm not disappointed, but be aware that it may not be worth the premium price. If you wish to holdoff then you should.

Let's not go into it thinking it's ruined, come now...this is a movie everyone as loved for the last 10 years. The only way to see it was with a lousy VHS and a DVD. There is no way even in the worst possible case that the BD will be worst then either one of them. So keep your morale up and watch it with great joy and have fun but don't go into it thinking its ruined, if you do that it will be ruined because you've made you mind up that it is already and you will not be able to enjoy the movie. Even the reviewers are saying that while it's not a reference BD it's way better then the DVD, let's have fun with it.

Yeah.... this is funny, because I don't know that people were saying it was 100% false..... they just gave other theories about frame-rate etc..

And Scarfather...... that's unfortunate indeed.... If it's not that noticeable, you can enjoy it, and just sell and double-dip later..... I don't see why this would be a problem for anyone...... Look how many different releases many DVDs had... people act like once a movie is made on Blu-ray it's never going to be made again...... Where were these people in 1997

good for them then, I'm not buying a f'd up release. Can't beleive so many on here don't see a problem with objects disappearing and reappering during the movie.

I think what is the only thing that might bother me is if you are going to launch a brand like "Sapphire Series", you might want to make sure it is top notch. If had been a regular release I would have been ok, double dip no problem

Oh no, don't get me wrong, I did and WILL continue to enjoy it. Just thought that some people would like confirmation that what is being said is accurate. I won't say that you need to believe what I am saying, but the disc does have the flaws. It may not be obvious, but they are there. But I was very surprised though at how obvious the fireballs flaw was. As I said, it looks more like bad/low budget CGI.

Guys, I got a question on this.

Ok so we all see the clip where the fireball goes away but what I was thinking it the clip is on a slow speed, won't it show less when the it's played a normal speed? I don't not much about films or video and I am no expert on DNR and such think but I was wondering what will it look like at normal speed?

I saw it at normal speed and it was noticeable. If you look at the trajectory of the fireballs, you will notice something odd. Like if the flame was digitally smudged. It doesn't have the look of real fire.

Yes you see it go out as it reaches the height of the trees in the background for I guess not even a second. Well thanks I was wondering how it might look at normal speed

And in your opinion does this really have a big impact on your viewing experience of the whole movie?
