It is in many parts considerably better than the DVD but in no way deserves any sort of "Blah blah blah Series" classification.

I am sure many here will be satisfied with it because they have not seen the DVD in a while. I encourage any of you that still have the dvd...compare.
I'm sure it will sell quite well for a catalog title. The vast majority of the people who buy it will be happy with it and will have never heard of any issues with it at all.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have never heard about problems with many movies because once you know it's hard to not notice them.

Geez. I like this movie but I'm almost looking forward to the Transformers 2 threads after all the Gladiator ones.

I couldn't agree more! There is no way that I do not have an already biased opinion about this. I will never know what would have happened had I not known about Blu-ray.com

You guys are ridiculous now lol.. I put this up in its own thread for informative purposes... Someone who wants to check out some quick screens isnt going to go hunting through 70 pages of a discussion thread hoping to get lucky.. And if they do, they will tell you its a pain in the ass.. I understand opening another movie discussion thread but I felt this was on its own level?

To whom it may concern,

Hi, I'm a huge fan of Paramount Pictures and was extremely excited to hear you were bringing Gladiator and Braveheart as the flagship titles to your new 'Sapphire Series' collection of Blu-Rays. In fact I was so excited that I went to Wal-Mart at midnight of the release date so I could get the Blu-Rays as soon as possible. When I got home I popped Gladiator into my Blu-Ray player and was very dismayed to find that the picture quality was extremely lacking. All of the detail was washed out - I felt that the picture quality was barely a step above an upscaled DVD. It was as if all the life had been sucked out of the film. At first I thought maybe there was something wrong with my Blu-Ray player, so I played Braveheart to see if the same thing happened. But the picture on Braveheart was GORGEOUS - very crisp and detailed. It was the opposite of Gladiator; as if new life had been breathed into the film.

So I'm wondering whether maybe I received a defective disc? I know something is wrong, because there's no way the picture is supposed to look like this. I would appreciate any light you could shed on this matter for me, and if I have in fact received a defective disc, I hope there's some way I can trade it in for a proper one.

Regards,
~
You'd have to give them your name dude, in order for them to do anything.

I would rather be informed. There are a number of movies that I ended up renting first, and in most cases, I always waited for a very good sale (because I was informed and knew that the PQ was boderline). There is nothing more disappointing, to me, than to drop $20+ on a much anticipated catalog release only to be really dissapointed after watching it and wishing I would have rented it or picked it up for $9-12... This happened several times to me early on during the format war and I have become much more selective now.

Maybe he just left it out on his post because he didn't want to publicize his name...who cares....the issue at hand is letting Paramount know he is displeased.

Which email address are you guys using?

That letter sounds very reasonable and a lot more valuable than what most of what the scientists have been proposing people to do. If enough people send these types of letters in then just maybe something will happen.

I'll still sticking to my post on the topic but good luck with it all:

People do not have to hunt through 70 pages since your screencaps would be on the latter pages of the thread ....doesn't matter now, what's done is done and your intentions were to help others so whatever

Default Gladiator & Braveheart

I'm in NO WAY a shill for Best Buy (I'm an Amazon guy myself), but I just walked out of BB with both GLADIATOR & BRAVEHEART for a total of $36.00 - they knock off $5 from the $22.99 price of each if you buy both together.

Just wanted you all to know this in case you're looking for a deal on these two flicks.

It might not be a bad idea. Just read the review when it comes out. I'm sure they'll treat the movies well. I just made it through the first 2 extended editions on DVD. Going to get through the last one this weekend. Great set of movies, it's been like 3 yrs since I've watched them.

I'm still picking these up today, 7.99 a piece is worth the risk.

New in-depth review by Bill Hunt at Digitalbits makes interesting reading.

Quote:
So let me be clear: Gladiator on Blu-ray is watchable - especially if you have a smaller screen. On the comparative grading scale we use for Blu-ray, the very best DVD video and audio quality would be graded a 10, while top Blu-ray quality would be a 20. So at 15.5, this is definitely an improvement over the previous DVD releases. The problem is, most high-quality Blu-ray titles these days score in the 18-19 range. So while this disc is watchable, that's just not good enough, either for the format as a whole or for most fans and enthusiasts.

I've seen that particular scene and honestly, the disappearing fireball didn't bother me as much as the overal reduced impact of the scene. Instead of a massive Roman volley of destruction by fiery arrows it looks like they're lobbing cigarettes and smoke bombs. The whole thing just looks off, like a lower budget version of a Roman attack.

Well there are loads of people on this forum that kept poo pooing everyone that judged this release without renting or buying it first to view it. You are well within your rights to request a refund, since you made the effort to purchase and view the film and give it a fair chance. This is Paramount's error, not yours; it should be on their dime.
