The picture may have been brightened to fool the unwary or just for a differentiating look, but probably is not the result of its out-of-standard encode. Still, they kept from blowing out the highs, whoop-de-do, as the whole presentation is a relative washout.

Consequently, and unlike its blu-ray predecessors, the 30th Anniversary release of Fright Night would never be mistaken for having a “rich” image.

Growing up with VHS and having copies of copies, as long as the picture is ok and I can see and hear what's going on I don't sweat it much. I think some people just cant be satisfied. There is a spot on his knee for 1 second, oh the horror! lol

That's me though. I'm sure projected to an insane 120" or whatever it looks a lot worse.
Nah my screen is 120, it looks really good.

A 3.5 PQ score for a Blu-ray taken from a 4K scan is pretty damned bad.

I'm one of those people who believe something is supposed to look "brand new"-ish when terms like "New 4K scan" and "remastered" are thrown around. I guess I have a lot to learn

I have read that the German scan is better than the TT, I was going to get either the German version or the Japan version which one should I get?

I think you're confusing me with someone else. I never called anyone a jerk in this thread, nor have I gotten riled up on this issue either way.

I've been skimming this thread for a while and can honestly say I really don't care about the microblocking debate, its just not an issue to me to have a few seconds of blocking in my favourite vampire movie.

I don't have this film on Blu-ray and wanted to wait till some extras came with the movie so this is the best version for me.

Hope mine comes this week

You won't be disappointed. If you like extras, this is the disc to get. The PQ is awesome unless you're going out of your way to look for the problems.

I take movie reviews (in general) with a grain of salt! If it's a movie that I want, I am going to buy it, regardless of other people's opinions, about the A/V quality. I have a mind of my own!. If a blu-ray look and sound good in my home theater, that's all that matters to me.

He gave the PQ 3.5 in the 2011 release as well, which was one of the lowest scores of on any site. So giving it the same score (however low) was like saying that it's better in some ways, worse in others. Pretty much the same thing many are saying here.

I would say this is the consensus here:

BEST

1. Twilight Time Original (video nearly as good as german/japan, but has lossless dts-ma 5.1 instead of lossy 640k dd5.1)
2. German or Japan, whichever is cheaper (best picture, but lossy dd5.1 only)
3. Twilight Time 30th (video a bit odd, though does have original 2.0 unlike others)

WORST

That wasn't me being angry and calling you a jerk. That was me being objective and saying no one in that conversation looked good. You were prodding them and using aggressive language, which is pretty jerky, and they were being unprofessional. It's an embarrassing exchange all around.

I don't think that is a consensus at all. The new disc has more detail and better grain. The other discs do not have the extremely brief webbing issues in a handful of frames. Which is better depends on which you value more, more detail and better grain or avoiding those minor trouble-spots.

Tom Holland actually mentions Psycho II quite a bit in the extras, which I though was really cool. Love that one.

I think once you calibrate the brightness levels between the releases so that they're the same, that the increase in detail on the new release is pretty negligent. What it really boils down to is whether you prefer the brighter picture or not, and whether one thinks it was intended (according to a highly respected insider here, it appears it was not). That's the only thing that really stands out.

I finally got to see this yesterday. I thought the picture looked just fine.

Started working my way through the special features, including the clips of the J. Geils Band. They've changed from what I remember of them ... then again, my first and most distinct memories of the band go back to the 1970s with songs like "Must Of Got Lost" and "Give It To Me". Looking forward to going through the rest of the special features. I love that stuff.

How does the German release have better picture quality over the first TT release? Are you talking "barely noticeable unless you're sitting 2 inches from your tv with a magnifying glass" kind of difference?"
