I don't think anyone has said the compression issues only pop up in two to three scenes. Examples have been given from 4 scenes so far (with it happening multiple times in one of them). But, I don't think the examples are meant to represent the totality of the issues. If any of the given examples aren't distracting to someone, I'd guess that any other occurrences would be irrelevant.

Good to hear. I think I will try and get ahold of them too since my case arrived damaged.

If the macroblocking had taken place during the scene where we see the prostitute's legs while she's getting out of the car instead of the scene with Chris Sarandon's legs, then I might have been more inclined to take issue with this release.
As is, I'm quite pleased with this Blu-ray. |

Sitting down and watching it on a 50" TV I would definitely say it's a 4.5 star visual experience. That 4k scan is lovely and everything pops with detail. The problem frames are barely noticeable in motion, so maybe knock a half-star off for them and call it a day.
That's me though. I'm sure projected to an insane 120" or whatever it looks a lot worse. |

So here's a question...
Is the German import the same transfer as the Twilight Time 30th Anniversary or is it the older darker transfer? Does it have the macroblocking? I really don't really care about extras for this movie, so is the import my best option? |

The import looks like the older TT release, yes. Whether that is the "best option" is an opinion though. I personally think the new transfer looks much better due to slightly enhanced grain and detail.

I think the German version looks better and there's no macroblocking that I can notice. I don't like the brighter look of the 30th anniversary edition. It's down to personal preference. Since you don't care about extras, the only downside to getting the German version is the lack of HD audio. It only has dolby digital 5.1.

The PCM stereo track was a great plus, but the film getting the original aspect ratio back was a big deal , Pan and Scan was the single biggest evil in video for me in those days. The one shot that sticks in memory from this film was the mirror reflection shot as Sarandon leaves the mothers room, the composition of the shot was completely destroyed. |

I bought three and was getting disappointed in what I have been reading. Missed the first time it was released but got the German one in September. I truly wont be able to see the quality on the new ones till I pick them up in June while visiting my parents then watch them on my HD TV in August.

If you want to perceive the main problem with this release, it may be helpful to keep in mind the following language from the blu-ray.com review:
“[T]he anomalies don't manifest as traditional macroblocking and instead tend to show up as flashes of what almost looks like webbing…” |

I appreciate the official Blu-ray.com review not tearing apart this release as most people will not notice the issue. As others stated, it is not traditional macroblocking, just a couple of frames here and there that messes up the motion in pans.
The brightness issue remains a debate as TT never mentioned they were going to tinker with the brightness/color. I think the brightness helps in some areas, harms in others. It is possible it was done intentionally, but it could be a colorspace conversion issue too. The question is, what is correct - and if my life depended on it I would probably guess the original release had the correct color timing simply because there are others with similar timing. In the end, stick with the original TT release if you have it. I think that one is the best - has solid video and the DTS-MA 5.1. |
