hi yes when i select dolby digital it plays on the 605 but when i selct the lossless nothing happens(this is when i have the blu ray player set to hdmi (normal).
when i switch to hdmi lpcm on the blu ray i can select lossless and dolby digital back and forth and hear both and on the 605 its just reads multi-channel and nothing else, so i am confused as to if im getting the best sound or not. thanks. |

I'm uncertain why your not getting the TrueHD or DTS-MA lights to turn on the receiver. If you set the player to output LPCM, you're still getting the best sound possible. The player is just converting from TrueHD or DTS-MA to LPCM, which is how the PS3 handles the newer audio codecs. So you're still getting lossless sound.

I picked up the BestBuy Insignia Blu-ray player for $199 Canadian on sale.
Here are my thoughts. I have a PS/3 set up in my living room. I wanted another player for the basement. I picked up this player on special. Looks big and bland but works well. I didn't really time how long it takes to load Blu-rays. But it did load the few Blu-rays I tried quickly enough that it is not a concern. The player has a setup menu which you should review. It defaults to either 480i or 480p. I configured it for 1080i. I have the player hooked up to a 36 inch 4:3 Panasonic Tau 1080i set that I bought in 2001. The image is very nice. I am only using the TV speakers so I can't really comment on the various HiDef audio options. Also I am using component cables since the TV does not accept HDMI. Up-scaling of DVDs only works on HDMI so I cannot comment on how well that works. DVDs come up in 480p mode on my set and look nice just as they did before. Blu-rays come up in 1080i. The player automatically figures out whether to output 480p or 1080i based on the type of disk you insert. The remote is nicely laid out. Nice-sized buttons. Not a pile of tiny buttons that are common on low-end Chinese DVD players. The only thing I don't like about the remote is that the STOP button is located in the same location as the PAUSE button on a PS/3 remote. But I'm getting used to that. Fan noise? Seems quite low, less than a PS/3. In summary, I am very pleased. |

Hey people..
I'm brand new to Blu-ray and picked up the Magnavox NB500MG9 player and rented a couple of BD movies. The sound and picture turned out great. I rented Rattatouille (i'm not going spell that right today) and Gone Baby Gone. During playback at 1080p (using HDMI cable) part way through the movies, the whole picture flashed black for a split second then displayed full picture again and continued playing. No slowdown. Gone Baby Gone did it twice - Rat did it once but then also got stuck on one scene and then skipped right on to the next. (I think there was a fingerprint on that one). These "flashes" are concerning and I'm wondering if this is a normal thing. I'm going to rent Iron Man tomorrow and see what happens. I should be the first person to play that copy of the movie so I'm hoping the playback has no hiccups. DVD playback is flawless so far so that's a good sign. When playing a DVD full length movie on my current DVD player, there is always one part of every movie that pauses for just a split second..like it's loading. Most movies have tried to hide it by having it inbetween scenes so I'm wondering if this Blu-Ray flash-of-black is the same thing? Please Answer! ![]() S |

Alright.. well thank you for replying. I'm going to rent a copy of Iron Man tomorrow and see what that does. These Blu-ray issues are happening on rented disks so hopefully I can get a brand new rentable copy for a real try. Everything else seems perfect.

Just a FYI - Ironman BDs are reported to have issues and are being recalled. Load and play on some players but not on others due to an authoring issue.

My understanding is it forbids output over component cables, but not HDMI? Is that correct?

Best Buy has the Insignia BD player on sale this week for $199.99. HERE is the link. Their regular price is now $229.99 (the lowest for any Funai made BD player). The only difference between the Insignia vs. the Magnavox/Sylvania versions is optical digital audio output vs. coax digital audio output (for basic Dolby Digital, DTS and 2-channel PCM, but not the lossless surround formats). Of course, if you are usng HDMI to output both video and digital audio neither the optical or coax audio output will be used.

Hello everyone,
this is my first post, and im sure wont be my last. im now part of the club with my first bd player it is a Magnavox nb500mg9 from walmart. so here's my problem: my tv is an older toshiba 65" theater wide its a nice set but only has component video in my a/v receiver is real old and needs to be replaced. I would like to add dolby true hd & dts hd to the theater , but wondering if I replaced my a/v receiver with a new one that decodes those formats would I be able to send my video from my bd player over component,to the tv , while at the same time sending the audio bit stream to the new a/v receiver for hd audio over the hdmi connection. Thanks in advance for help , and it is a pleasure to be part of this forum. -Shawn |

what im wondering if it can be done , if both ports are active at the same time (component out & hdmi out) then I would be golden with a new a/v receiver that decodes hd audio.

Best Buy is now listing a new model Insignia BD player. Its not clear if this new one is made by Funai, like their first generation Insignia player, or not. The list price for the new model is $249 and it uses the Broadcom BCM7440P chip instead of the Panasonic Uniphier chipset that is used in the current Funai manufactured BD players. The new model has an ethernet port on the rear but it's marked for future use (it appears this new player is firmware upgradable to Profile 2.0. Here is the link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1217029959586
Some people over on the AVS Forum have speculated that its a rebadged Samsung 1500 but the internal circuit boards are not the same as those in the Samsung, even though it uses the same Broadcom chip, I doubt that its being made by Samsung and may be the next generation of Fuani made BD players. We will have to see it similar new models soon appear under the Magnavox and/or Sylvania brands (since those brand names are owned by Funai). Last edited by ronjones; 10-31-2008 at 11:47 PM. |

Given that Funai has OEM'ed DVD players to Denon for years, I wouldn't be surprised if the lower end Denon BD player(s) are being supplied by Funai. It would be interesting to see some photos of the Denon's internal PC boards and component layout so we could compare it the known Funai manufactured BD players.
