I've skipped over this thread for days thinking it was about a SONY released movie called BLACK CRUSH that I never heard of and had no interest in.

haha I did the same thing at first.

I don't think they were but none of the Sony licensed titles to Twilight Time were affected correct?

He also praised the pastel FRENCH CONNECTION and said Criterion was right not to letterbox RIOT IN CELL BLOCK 11. Sorry, but the self-appointed god of HTF is in the back pockets of the studios. He's done good restoration work, but his poorly written, biased reviews and posts, not to mention all his creepy, toady sycophants over there, are a joke.

Not sure what you mean.

1) Robert Harris is implying that our TVs are all too dark?

2) Robert Harris is implying that we need to buy new TVs?

3) Robert Harris thinks that the black crush was correctly applied?

In all fairness those comments work both ways. I think we should be a little more kind.

I think the first screen here really summarizes the issue. Looks terrible.

Even if that were the case, adjusting our monitors does not reveal the detail that was destroyed by the black crush.
To be fair to his response, he admits to NOT tracking the thread/conversation and says It Could Be a Gamma issue as opposed to It is. He really didn't make a definitive statement in regards to it.

Now I think he's incorrect about the GAMMA setting being an issue.

Yowch, those My Girls caps are nasty. The night time shot has the same blue-tinged blacks that plagued Fury too.

He praised the original French Connection Blu-ray for what it was because he personally liked what Friedkin had tried to do, but he made it quite plain that it was NOT the original Academy Award winning photography that we were seeing, and said that they should've included another disc with that as an option.

Why is everything so ****ing black and white with people? Why does RAH have to be a god among men or an evil studio shill? As I just said in the Spartacus thread, he's forgotten more about film than 99.999% of people on this board (including me) will ever know so I can forgive the occasional bump in the road.

His posting style has become increasingly droll over the years but, speaking as a full-time sarcastic douchebag, I've never had a problem with that. RAH's always been gracious enough to answer any questions I've had about film so he's still one of the good guys IMO. He's not infallible, but then are any of us?*

*Bruce Kimmel excepted, natch. He's right about EVERYTHING, and he'll probably tell God he's doing it wrong when he eventually gets to meet him....just kidding, Bruce!

Said for years, Harris is one of the Kings of photochemical, but feels out of touch with digital.

Harris should stick to restoring films, not attempting to write about them. But I will say one thing for him: He and Kimmel and a few others drove me away from HTF to come over here, for which I am eternally grateful. BluRay.com is a lot of fun.

I just took a lil' gander at that htf thread and Will Krupp, whoever that is, totally dominates it. Or at least the last page or so. Well done Krupp! hehe

COULD be. MAY be.

No offense, but this is precisely how misinformation gets started and inevitably gets names dragged through the mud. The man is making an educated guess, you pass it off as fact, and then it gets people to go a little bananas.

Please read what's actually written, and not what you think it's saying.

True to an extent.(Mostly true)

If you've ever seen reviews on HDTVTEST.co.uk. When calibrating for film material they always calibrate to 2.4 now.

Which imo is crazy. There's no way these films could be mastered to 2.4, because they are already too dark by 2.2 standards along with black crush. Viewing these on a display set to 2.4 is just gonna be even worse.

Black crush aside, My Girl looks damn good. Huge upgrade over the DVD.
