Oh man, the drama. I said from minute one The Interview looks screwed up. The only title I have contested is Fury, and only because I think the Sony transfer looks better than the Polish BD or DVD, black crush or not.

Arg!!!

Yep, as noted in the original post, the BDs are the only ones with black crush.

The DVD, UltraViolet and Netflix versions all look normal. More importantly, the HD clips of the films used in the featurettes on the BDs look normal as well. It is only the BD feature films that have the black crush.

This is a big thread so 'scuse me if this has been asked. Is it just the select titles on the OP that are affected? Are releases coming out currently (Whiplash was recent I think) still affected by this problem?

I tried searching, and this doesn't seem quite asked (kinda sorta mentioned in one post); but this black crush is basically the same dark transfer/master effect that some people noted with WB's release of GODZILLA (2014)?

If the issue is being noted on releases from multiple studios, I wonder if the core problem could be use of new software or something when creating the home video master that results in the darker picture?

No, Godzilla was just a really dark movie and the BD matched the theatrical presentation. Black crush isn't about a dark image, it's about there being no detail in blacks. Everything black is "crushed" and pure black, basically.

It's only the titles mentioned in the original post that have been destroyed by the black crush.

I witnessed this first hand last night when I popped in my new copy of My Girl. Five minutes in I couldn't take it and I switched over to the digital copy on VUDU and it looks SO MUCH BETTER! I really hope Sony will do something about this.

I know I really want to watch the movie but from what I've seen from skipping through it....it's hard to watch.

Watched Troop Beverly Hills the other night and was shocked how much it was affected by this. It wasn't unwatchable like The Interview, but the the black crush was incredibly distracting, perhaps most so in the bright, outdoor scenes which had random black holes in peoples clothing and in the woods in contrast to the bright, sunshine that was everywhere. I found it very annoying and returned the disc. I won't be buying anymore Sony releases unless/until this issue is acknowledged and fixed.

Any news from Sony yet? Or is the customer service, still acting like robots?
With their useless answers.

I think, more importantly (as it'd have more chance of success), haven't any of t'internet's 'in the knowwell connected' types had any luck?

I'm sure the likes of Robert Harris and Bill Hunt will have heard about this, among others.

My understanding was that he'd reviewed one, and that before the whole shooting match took off.

He also says that the Sony BDs are being mastered according to a new spec.

I've not been tracking this thread, but if these are all current releases, it could be that everyone's monitors are improperly adjusted for the new gamma standard of 2.4 vs 2.2.

There may be a need for multiple settings based upon the date that programming was finalized and authored.

That should be fun...

RAH
Even if that were the case, adjusting our monitors does not reveal the detail that was destroyed by the black crush.

exactly. altering the gamma in our monitors, doesn't reveal erased detail!

I think the key words are 'could be'.
