Where there isn't black crush, are the highlights blown out?
With film there is something known as a transfer curve, density vs. exposure. To avoid black crush and blown out highlights, the film must be exposed and processed so that the desired image lies on the linear part of the transfer curve. And, of course, the scene must be properly lighted to do that. How the film is processed plays a part, too, in where the image lies on that curve -- different results can be achieved with the same film stock if it's processed differently but shot under the same lighting conditions. When making a print, the transfer curve of the paper or film onto which the negative is printed must also be considered. The curves of the negative material and print material may be different. Analogously, the "transfer curves" of the negative, the video master and the digital encode may all be different. So, there are tradeoffs: do I want to sacrifice some shadow detail for highlight detail? Last edited by joie; 03-20-2015 at 02:43 AM. Reason: clarify what needs to be on the linear part of the curve |

I don't think anyone should be unwelcome for sharing relevant info to the topic. Heck, I don't think he should be unwelcome even if he still doesn't believe there's any black crush and wants to argue the point. A good case should be put to scrutiny. But he's not even doing that here.

I never said I was going away anyway, so not sure what he's talking about. I said I wasn't going to argue over black crush anymore because life is too short. Also Fury is the only movie I've argued about, mainly because the US BD looks better to me in caps, even if it has crush. The other films obviously have an issue, especially The Interview. Anyway... good to see some reviewers commenting, it means Sony will hear it louder. |

Sadly I agree. I think the chances of the catalog titles getting fixed are slim to none. I'm hoping, at best, that we get the new releases (FURY, THE INTERVIEW, ANNIE) replaced.

And it's also worth noting that most reviewers aren't being paid for their time. It's also worth noting that pretty much anyone can write a review on the internet, and not everyone has the same opinion, at that.

The Interview seems even worse than Fury by looking at the cap comparisons. |
