First Aliens on Blu-ray News; Possible Game Tie-In?
February 18, 2009

In November 2007, Fox Home Entertainment packaged all four Die Hard movies into a Blu-ray Disc box set as the "must have" Blu-ray purchase for the holiday season. Almost exactly a year later, they raised the bar and forged a lavish Planet of the Apes Blu-ray set with new high definition bonus features.

I've been speculating for close to a year now that Fox will raise the bar yet again when November 2009 rolls around by tapping into another one of their marquee franchises: Alien. The original Alien film celebrates its 30th anniversary this year making all four films prime candidates for a Blu-ray set.

Today the crew over at Bloody Disgusting offered the first confirmation (albeit without citing a source) that at least the first three Alien films are currently being prepped for release on Blu-ray with newly produced bonus features. Will they be up-converts or new transfers? Will all four films be included in a set or will each be available separately? When are they coming out? These are all questions desperately seeking answers.

The staff here at TheHDRoom got pretty damn excited when we saw this news. James Cameron's Aliens in DTS-HD Master Audio and 1080p video? We'd all drop $50 or more in a heartbeat for that disc alone.

Lets suppose Fox is indeed packaging the Alien Quadrilogy for Blu-ray in November. Does that mean SEGA's Aliens: Colonial Marines PS3 and Xbox 360 FPS will come out the same time? With Sony's upcoming June 16 simultaneous debut for Ghostbusters on Blu-ray and in game form on Xbox 360 and PS3, I'd be shocked with Fox and SEGA aren't collaborating for a simultaneous anniversary release. If they aren't, I really someone someone in either marketing department reads this and takes action.

Amen to that brother!

I wouldn't mind if it's less though

Hope so. I bet watching Alien in HD with a crashing soundtrack
[Show spoiler](especially the self destruct sequence)
will be fantastic.

Oh yeah...one of my favorite sagas of all time. They did such a fantastic job on the quadrilogy giving us theatrical and directors/extended cuts...and those bonus documentaries...I'm salivating just thinking about this on blu.

I just find it weird they are questioning it will be an upconvert or a new transfer. Wouldn't it either be complete restoration or an older master but presented at a higher resolution?

from bloody-disgusting.

We learned of some very interesting news that has me jumping for joy. We discovered that Fox Home Entertainment is currently working on brand new Blu-ray releases for Alien, Aliens and Alien 3. Each film is said to be released in a new special edition set with brand new special features made just for these releases!

The only concern I have is Fox's lackluster Blu-ray releases, where the quality looks like a simple up-convert as opposed to a brand new transfer (see Predator, Commando, Donnie Darko and numerous others). No release date has been set, but I'm praying we see this before year's end.

Well look how bad Die Hard Blu Ray transfers are.. I thought I was watching the regular DVD version when I watched first Die Hard.... Lucky for me I checked it out of the local library for free to watch it and didn't have to pay a dime to see how bad the copy was on Blu.

Default Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 Release, do you want grain or DNR & EE?

There have been rumors of a possible blu-ray release of Alien, Aliens and the third https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=87536

Being a big fan of the series I'm suddenly
concerned that they wont do these releases prober.
My concern is Grain, or the lack of!
I sure hope that however is transfering these soon blu-ray's to be,
aren't gonna DNR (Digital Noise Reduction) & EE (Edge Enhancement) the crap out of the movies!
Correct me if I'm wrong, DNR'ing means "wiping" the picture to defeat the grain and
ultimately also wiping the details, we ( I ) need to see in the movies.
And EE to give it a fake detail "look" also leaving halos around the edges of everything.
Personally I prefer grain, but I'm not in love with grain but I have accepted
grain to be natural. That's why I'll vote for grain.
Now my question is to you,
do you want processed (DNR and EE) blu-ray copies
of the Alien releases? to give it a "modern" and "newer" look? (Examples?)
Or do you want the movies closer to their original look/feel? (I.E. Godfather trilogy, Close Encounters of the 3 Kind)
Please think long and hard and feel free to state why you voted this or that.
I don't know if this is the correct forum, but this is concerning the future blu-ray releases,
so here you go.

Here's the issue for me: I highly prefer the clean look with no grain but only if that means they didn't EE the crap outta it as those halos are very distracting and I also don't want detail missing and having it look smeared or soft. So, that means for most movies that means there is gonna be grain and from alot of these 70's and 80's flicks that means ALOT of grain as they didn't use the best film stock. I have a feeling this Alien movies are gonna have lots of grain and there will be about 100 threads on here complaining they f'd the movie up. Just go ahead and prepare for it.

Fox does not use DNR in their titles, Patton and Longest Day were mastering errors.

This is The Longest Day on BD:

Look at how much detail is lost. Everything looks waxy.
