Default Some DVDs > Blu-ray, and Grain is "bad"

Ok, I don't know if this topic has been covered yet, as I searched the forum for it. I have noticed alot of movies are being released on Blu-ray format which are really are designed for Blu-ray and others that don't look any better or EVEN WORSE than their DVD counterpart. I reciently rented a couple of movies; Midnight Meat Train, 300, 3:10 to Yuma. I was all but impressed with the image (actually Meat Train was down-right unwatchable). On then on the other end of the spectrum; Iron-Man, The Dark Night, Transformers; were undeniably amaizing. I still, for the life of me, wonder why someone would want to pay almost double for a Blu-ray version of an older movie vs. watching the DVD vesion upscaled to 1080. I think there should be a resource to come to when deciding on which movies are worth getting on Blu-ray and which are not. Any comments?

I've paid less for my Blu-Rays than the same movies on DVD by using deals and searching around. (Amazon 3 for 2 mainly), so I'm not sure why you think everyone pays double.

And which Blu looks worse than its DVD counterpart?

It depend's on what you are looking for. Amazon yes as some good prices but only if you are buying a lot of different types of movies.

Lol good joke. Have your eyes checked, it helped me a lot but if you're saying some look great and movies like Midnight Meat Train look bad that I don't know what to recommend. Also keep in mind that picture is only half of what makes blu-ray better then DVD.

I think it's pretty hard for the Blu-ray to look worse when compared to the DVD. However, I've never seen it on Blu-ray, but I've heard that Sleepy Hollow took a beating.

I'm talking about if you were at any local store or even renting it, which are worth the time to get? And to be clear I'm watching it on a 63'' sammy the a Samsung BD-P4600 using Monster Cable - Ultra Series 1000 HDMI cable. The picture on some the dissapointing movies I had mentioned look way grainy, because they weren't shot using digital media. The player is clarifing the already bad quality of the film. You mean to tell me it's worth buying a movie like Saturday Night Fever on Blu-ray? AND it's any better than it is on DVD? Come on?

The color spectrum of blu-ray is far greater than dvd. What this means is that older films will look book better on blu because the range of colors presented is wider and more accurate. This results in the image having higher contrast and more natural colors, especially in skin tones. The increased resolution goes without saying.

Grain is inherent to film, and not a negative. If your display is showing too much noise, then turn down the sharpness.

Well there's your problem you payed way too much for a HDMI cable not to mention this topic is in the wrong section.
And yeah grain is the building blocks of film so don't diss it. Understand why it is there and accept it.

So is this worth buying a Blu-ray version if you already own it on DVD? Considering you dont have a cash to burn. My point is that if you look at the movies that are really designed for Blu-ray playback, the visuals are crystal clear an vibrant (night and day against a DVD) and in my opinion worth the exrta purchase if previously owned on DVD. But paying $40+ dollars to see more grain because of the age of the film is a negative to me and my family. I have adjusted my picure on my Plazma to the reccomended settings using a calibration Blu-ray disc Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics so I'm sure its not the sharpness' fault.

That would be up to the consumer. Personally, if i like the film, then I want the best version available, which is the blu-ray.

Also, as previous posters have mentioned, Blu-ray's also have superior sound to standard DVDs for those who take advantage of the lossless audio codecs.

In any case, I hope you enjoy your blu purchases.

#1 I never mentioned how much I paid for it.
#2 This is the only section with media as an option.
#3 have Power DVD Ultra hooked up to the Sammy too and it's the same as the Sammy Blu-ray image wise.

I'll just check out the reviews on the main page and go from their, since obviously no-one here has a clue (makes me wonder if they get paid to kill any type of negative rederick in here). In the reviews they give pro-and-cons to the BD version, thought it would be nice to compile those thoughts in a thread here. Have fun watching your Hi-Def 1970's-80's & 90's movies in BD, I'll pass.

You don't need to say how much you paid for the Monster cable. Everyone here knows how overpriced they are and don't give you any advantage over a cheap cable whatsover. And the Blu-rays of movies made in the 70s/80s/90s are giving us what we saw in the cinema. Or the original negative the director was editing. And there is no movies designed for Blu-ray playback. All movies are made for the cinema not a next gen optical disc.

The best Blu-rays are from Pixar. Period.

Watch for the grain fanatics here - they love it and will tear you a new one if you imply that you do not.
There are movies where the "grain" is not as pronounced and they are watchable.
There are also purely digital movies that are pretty much grain-free(no digital noise either).

Older movies and even some newer ones have grain for various reasons.
If you like it, fine!
If you do not like it, also fine!
Blu-ray *WILL* deliver the movie(film or digital) in as close to original as possible.
If that means grainy as a snow storm, then snowy it will be.
But, if the movie is crystal clear, Blu-ray will deliver that as well.

So Far, the best movie I have seen is I, Robot.
There is grain, but it's not distracting.

Accept it? Hardly!
Put up with it is more like it.

Well, I've got this movie "The Thing" in DVD and Blu Ray format, I'll have to say the quality in BD format is a huge improvement, the PQ are so detail compare to DVD version. The movie even got scarier(Thanks to HD PQ)

There is a lot of missunderstanding with BD. Yes some transfert's have not been the best ever. Many of the early releases were rush on the format with the studios not taking the time to make a proper release. Hollywood producers are business men, always ready for the quick money grab.

I would say it's up to the buyer to read a bit, check a few reviews and see if the purchase is worth making on BD. But I know blind buy is also very popular option for a lot of people, which I never quite understood.

Even if a movie was made 50 years ago, it will look great on BD with proper care. Check Casablanca or Patton or Sleeping Beauty. BD help's uncompress what we use to have on VHS and DVD.

In short any BD, even the worst possible transferts are superior then any DVD. After that it's up to each person to decide if it's worth adding it to his collection.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So is the intellect of another person.

If you think that all BDs look better than their DVD counterpart (which I happen to think for the most part) than that's fine. If you don't think that, then don't buy the BD of a movie you already have on DVD.

I personally wonder how someone may be what they consider to be a movie person and not understand things like grain or how even a well shot movie could have a bad transfer but that's a different topic for a different thread.

I thought Godfather II looked and sounded better on BD than DVD, grain and all. Maybe it's in my head maybe (and most likely) it's not but I wouldn't be a member of Blu-Ray.com if I didn't think that on the average, BD is vastly superior to DVD in every conceiveable way and I want to know more about it.
