I don't think anything has been confirmed, and its not out of the question he comes back.

Some fans say his death was unsatisfying and meaningless, and there is no way they will end the series like this. I don't know if that's true, but its not out of hte question.

I'm gonna go with the cinematographer > Twitter whiners on this one.
Yeah, sure. It's so easy for people to casually drop a thousand or more on a new/better TV just to properly enjoy a show.

I have a 2016 LG 43Lh5000 1080p LED setup. And it was viewed in a completely darkened room.

But I agree, it's a shame that I'm going to assume a large percentage of viewers watch this on their phones/laptop which is only worse in this episodes case as you can't see shit.

On most devices these output settings are known as "Limited" and "Full Range" or (RGB Full). For TV and Movies, you will want limited.

Yeah, I think that’s the issue with that clip. My TV’s default was Full Range and everything looked messed up.

The HBOGO and on demand versions look nothing like that clip.

I'm 99% sure. When I first setup my PS4 to watch GoT, the first episode of this season looked exactly like that (super dark). I knew something was wrong, so I checked my video output settings and sure enough my display output was set to "Auto" which was in fact, sending the wrong color space (Full). I switched it to Limited, and problem was solved.

This morning I watched "The Long Night" once again.

I tried it first on my laptop and the picture was just as nasty as on the TV (originally watched on Samsung UN82NU8000FXZC with AppleTV4K source).

However, when I opened the CraveTV app on my iPad Pro, the image I saw was unbelievable! The shadows were flawlessly blended from inky blacks to subtle greys and within those shadows was perfect detail. It is no exaggeration when I say that every scene in this episode was metered with precision. The natural lighting in some of the shots was jaw-dropping beautiful.

I tried to get some screen caps but I guess there is some variety of DRM in place.

I can only conclude that:
  • the data stream has been optimized for mobile devices
  • the image resolution is far too low for proper display on large screens
  • the image compression is far too aggressive for proper display on large screens
  • Apple is not just boasting when they claim how good their "Retina" display is
(at least two of those are accurate)

The cinematographer must have been devastated when he saw what the HBO stream did to his work. It really was ruined.

I don't think they'll have to do anything for the UHD release.

It’s a shame a lot of people watched the horrific broadcast and might not see it again on blu-ray. It’s visually one of the most stunning episodes of TV, ever:

Agreed. Clip I shared looked a lot darker than what I saw when watching through the app.

Exactly what happened in my case. Once that was changed and compression aside, this really is a beautiful episode.

It's incredible what one wrong setting can do, and yes, I can't wait to see it on Blu

I agree with both statements. This is going to be an absolute treat in 4k HDR.

Holy crap if that top picture is how people were seeing it then I get the complaints. As you say though, the episode looked gorgeous when viewed correctly.

I think a decent number of people probably were. I have watched the previous episodes on that same apple tv and never caught on that the black level setting may be mismatched. Things looked a little darker but nothing excessive like that before. I watched the whole episode like that before getting into a heated argument with another friend that he kept insinuating I was just *****ing about it being dark and it was a creative choice and I was over reacting. In some scenes it wasnt nearly as bad so I genuinely believed what I was watching was correct especially when it became a meme the following day.

In this pic the top is correct and the bottom was how I originally watched it, so again I think you can understand why I made it through the whole episode watching it that way.
