The blurb says the animator is controversial ... why is this animated film controversial? What's controversial about it?

Looks like it was done by a darker anime creator, if so not that surprising. There are some anime out there that shock even me and I'm not easily shocked.

Hmm I saw the trailer

http://www.blue-underground.com/product.php?product=176

and it seems like a normal animated flick to me. I guess they did a restoration. It has two 7.1 lossless tracks. Is this the first Dolby TrueHD 7.1 blu-ray? Definitely the first with both.

I wouldn't call Ralph Bakshi anime. Anime infers Japanese. Bakshi was involved in heavily adult and underground fare of the '70's in America, notably Fritz the Cat and Coonskin. Fire and Ice is very much like the work of illustrator Frank Frazetta (google it for some AMAZING stuff) ~ on Blu, this is really, really exciting~~!!

The blurb is correct in saying that the animator is controversial. Bakshi pioneered "adult" animation back in the Seventies. Both Fritz the Cat and Heavy Traffic were originally rated "X". Needless to say, both films were highly controversial at the time, even if they appear a bit mild by today's standards. The aforementioned Coonskin (which was retitled Streetfight when it was released on VHS years ago) satirizes racial stereotypes by featuring extreme racial stereotypes -- including a big-lipped main character. The controversy over that film has never died down, which is why it has been little seen on home video.

In the case of Fire and Ice, however, there is no particularly controversial material. It is violent for a cartoon, but fully within the boundaries of its PG rating. It is well worth a look, though I would suggest renting it first if you have no experience with Bakshi's films.

I love the movie. I was lucky enought to watch it 14 years ago on a vhs of my cousin and love it!
controversial or not, Blind instant buy for me.
I think the movie is so underrated...at least in Europe.

I would like the original "Heavy Metal" on blu.

the sequel "F.A.K.K 2" ....was more like a "Fakk U" to the fans of the original.

Yeah I would suggest a rental first if you have not seen it...

In my case, day 1 purchase! I have always loved this film and I do hope the restoration is well made, the DVD did not look that good IMO

I own the 2 disc special edition DVD, so the Blu will be a first day purchse. I love Bakshi, and would like to see more of his films on Blu. I've seen most all of them.

Same here, this is a classic movie. I especially like the Frank Frazetta documentary, anyone who loves fantasy art needs to pick this up.

This movie is in my top 10.

As for it the animation being controversial? There is a scantly clad damsel in distress, but that's about it. Bakshi himself has done some more controversial films like Fritz the Cat, Coon skin and Heavy Traffic.

the Frazetta doc "Painting with Fire" is amazing. the man had a stroke and then learned how to draw and paint with his left hand. it's inspiring

oh is the doc now included?? I thought the bluray wasn't retaining it.

as for 'Coonskin' I loved it, shame that like 'Song of the South' a DVD release is highly unlikely.

It's rated PG, so it can't be that controversial.

The illustrator is controversial, not the film.
