It’s crazy all you have to look at is Martin Scorsese’s career didn’t win for Raging Bull in 1980 but was voted the best picture of the whole decade!! Goodfellas in 1990 was also robbed, Dances with Wolves was great but Goodfellas influenced a whole generation of filmmakers at the time. Look at Kubrick arguably one of the greatest filmmakers of all time but no Oscar.

Yeah, that Master of Disguise movie. Clearly the turtle scene was an allegory for how certain people are still shunned by even their own group (“Am I not turtle-y enough for the turtle club?”).

I will never forgive the Academy for not giving that film the nomination that it deserved and I don't give a rats ass with all the "its a comic book movie bull****"; it was one of the best films that year hands down.
I agree. I still remember the feeling I had walking out of the theater playing TDK. My pulse was truly racing.

My favorite to this day is still unbreakable. Its my kind of superhero movie. I was a little sad that Split tied into it even. Sometimes sequels diminish the impact of the first - I think of the Matrix as a good example of this for me.

Can't wait for Marvel to re-release with a "Best Picture" special edition.

Maybe we'll get new BTS features and that supposed 4-hour cut

Oh, absolutely. This was a movie that outgrossed every Marvel movie but Avengers 1 (adjusted for population AND ticket prices).

I live in Augusta, GA. It's about 50% black in the city itself. Wow, was the theater rocking. Just seeing being black - even fantasy superhero black - celebrated like it was along with a black director and much of the movie's music from black artists on the screen was something to be celebrated for most of the people in the audience.

Now, I only think the movie was merely good and not great but that crowd reaction was awesome. I've seen crowds get into the movie when I lived in SF (where they will boo and cheer trailers!) but never here in Augusta until Black Panther.

Combine that with the snubbing comic book movies have been getting for years and I can see why it was nominated. Though you can see by the categories it *wasn't* nominated in that it's not a particularly esteemed movie.

No one ever complained about the politics of Hollywood in the '50s. Nope. Never.

To be honest, if a movie I really liked got a nomination for best picture from the academy, it wouldn't make me like it more. Same as hearing about any movie getting a nomination - it does not make me think "I should see that". If anything, it has the opposite effect.

I guess blockbusters like Beverly Hills Cop or I Am Legend weren't special because the director wasn't black, even though Black Panther plays things safer than those did.

That's a pretty nuclear take, sounds like an exhausting worldview.

This.

There are dozens, if not hundreds of awards and award ceremonies for various industries every year, the world over. Why do we give a f*** about this particular one? I'm not angry when my dentist doesn't win Best Dental Practice for the 3rd year running, as voted by other dentists. Actually, I probably care more about that, than the f***ing Oscars.

FYI, I'm all for positive black role models on film, as there simply aren't enough of them and I completely get how Black Panther was culturally important, but bolting on a Best Picture award to a largely mediocre superhero film is not the way to erase Hollywood's guilt over neglecting to recognise black talent for decades.

Same, but I don’t think critical reaction should have any impact on your feelings about a Marvel movie. They are beloved by every toddler to grandmother around the world, they aren’t exactly art films.
