Default Of course Begins is awesome

I think Rises failed because it simply didn’t live up to the precedent set by the first two. But color me one that still enjoys Rises immensely; that first fight between Bane and Bats was just so incredibly visceral and almost hard to watch, I still play that scene alone all the time with my system cranked up.

I genuinely dig them all, but Begins is best. TDK I never went crazy for at the time so I'm basically undergoing the reverse to what some of y'all have experienced: now I'm kinda loving it. I mean it's not reshaping my entire world view or anything but it's a cracking movie. TDKR is utter nonsense but it's a lot of fun.

This was nominated for political/cultural reasons. I'm not even attacking the movie, I think it's a fine blockbuster, but that's the reason it was nominated and stuff like Logan was not. You can be mad about that if you want, but this has always been an Oscars thing. Well, always in my adult life anyway. They always want to send a message, they always focus on message movies and politically/culturally important movies. That's why I said this would be nominated. It was a no-brainer honestly.

It won't win though, the Academy won't go that far, because they still have their pinky-fingers up about what a "good" movie is. This was a nomination gesture to the film's importance, and that's all.

What cultural importance? It was created and financed by rich white people who are cashing in on white guilt. If anything, it’s an insult to basic intelligence. Now Get Out, that was a fun movie and culturally significant.

It's a massive blockbuster with a mostly Black cast and Black creative team. It celebrates African heritage and culture. It was a big deal in Black communities, trust me. One of my wife's best friends is Black and her entire family treated Black Panther like it was the second coming of Jesus, as did most of the people she works with in the city. It was a REALLY big deal.

They got a bone thrown at them. That’s why it’s so insulting. I’m rooting for black talent to come up with their own characters, superheroes, and stories. And make it accessible enough to where all races of the world would want to watch and support. A cultural phenomena. And rake that money in to hire more talent and tell more stories.

This doesn’t even require a lot of funding, just great ideas and good timing. All of these Xenomorphs, superheroes, Terminators, Vaders, Rockys, Luke Skywalkers, etc. started on budgets smaller than an average car.

If we're talking about the cultural aspect of why it was nominated, what about 'Crazy Rich Asians' huh? Huh????? Where's the Asian representation at the Academy Awards?? Oh wait... they don't want to go TOO far... lol

Kidding (sort of).

Avatar is a joke. No one would care for it if not for its technological advances and even then most people have forgotten it almost 10 years later.

Logan didn’t really “deserve” a nom either IMO, and it got one for its average screenplay. I agree with Ethan Hawke. As much as I love superhero movies, there hasn’t yet been one thats truly deserving of major awards attention, outside of VFX and technical stuff.

With that said I’m still fine with the nominations for BP and Logan, since I still like those movies and understand the significance of BP.

I don't know who created Black Panther in the comics, but other than that doesn't this movie fit that bill? Black director and creative team, telling a story of a Black character which is a mainstream blockbuster that appeals to everyone? That's Black Panther, and that's why it is special.

I can stomach the rushed CGI, but just wish the audio on this release wasn’t neutered.

Spike Lee is gonna win cause liberal Hollywood is all about identity politics.
I can´t even watch award shows anymore cause they´re just being turned into weaponized political propaganda these days. They don`t even seem to care anymore that the ratings are tanking completely.
I`m sick of politics. Movies and award shows should focus on entertaining not pushing political agendas.

They literally almost created an entirely new Popular Movie category because the ratings have tanked.

I love this movie. I think I've watched it maybe five times (including once theatrically and once with the commentary). It has started to feel like a guilty pleasure, because the last couple of times I watched it looking for a reason to like it less after all of the negativity towards it online. Eh, just doesn't happen, so I'm happy for most of its nominations. I definitely agree that it wouldn't have been a strong contender for visual effects, and I have other films I would have nominated for Best Picture over it, but alas, happy for all involved.

Pretty hilarious to see people claim the Academy has become political in recent years. It literally always has been, throughout history. All art is inherently political anyway.
