I was not going for the TE. Then I'm wondering about the BBSteelbook. Was there i pic of it here? You got have the Extended. The theatricals are good for a quicker watch.
... decision ...

What a blunder Warner has on it's hands. Bad enough there are obvious issues with the PQ that can be overlooked J6P but how did they miss this?
Agreed, PQ problems aside, this framing or aspect ratio problem
is just inexcusable.

Did any reviewer notice the missing arrows in Gladiator BEFORE someone at AVS pointed them out?

But if you havent, it sounds like youve made up your mind already, billing it as a sub par experience. The only thing hat we truly know based on pro reviews is that Fellowship is a little softer than the other two... Does that warrant saying it's a half ass transfer regarding all 3 films? In my eyes, no. But then again, that's my opinion, and it may not agree with yours... That's cool. All I'm saying is, and I'm not speaking about you, is there's a lot of slams against the release from people who havent even gotten their copies yet. I'm not defending the release either. I havent seen it yet! If it's garbage, then I'll be next to everybody else throwing tomatoes at it! But let's wait til we've all had a chance to see it for ourselves before we crucify it!

I have seen/read enough from sources that have proven to be VERY reliable over the months/years in comparison to my own experiences (Dave, Ken, Xylon, etc.....) that I would be absolutely floored to find my own experience considerably different when I finaly rent these. Of course I will let my own eyes be the judge, but my hopes are all but gone for this initial release from a transfer standpoint with everything we know up to this point.

Even by that small chance that I do find these "good", the fact remains that they should and could have been considerably better with a proper transfer and that is something that I cant let go

Interesting quote from Alan Gouger (AVS owner) over on AVS who has viewed both the blu ray and HDTV versions................

if you get a chance to grab the Mpeg2 recordings off HBO from anyone they have no DNR and are superior. Shame someone went joystick happy on these.

I think Todd has been vocal in this thread because he wants the best
Blu-ray has to offer and clearly this is not it. Some people are just
more critical than others.

Don't we all want the best from Blu-ray?

at any rate, those caps look mediocre at best for a 2001 film. soft and blurry.
Screen-caps are always going to look a bit soft on a computer monitor.

But then you would need to sync & splice the HD audio from the blu-ray to match the HDTV broadcast. Then you would have a true better version of the movies.

This is exactly why I am vocal, and why more of us should be vocal. There is still hope for future editions of these films including the EEs which I am still looking forward to and plan on buying. These are 3 of my favorite films (just like many of you) and they deserve better treatment.

I am "pleased" because I am glad there are others who dont accept a half ass effort of 3 of the greatest films of all time and are willing to say so. There are not enough of us in this forum it seems, so its good to see those who feel the same way speak out.

What cracks me up is that if one reviewer sees dnr, they all see it. Yet, I would venture to guess that most people don't even know what it is, or what it does to a movie.

The very large majority of the Mines of Moria sequence looked superb.

People always make a big deal about taking out Tom Bombadil but the big omission from that part of the story is the barrow-wights. Its at Barrow-Downs where Merry got his blade (a sword of westernesse) that deals the crippling blow to the Lord of the Nazgul. With this left out there is no explanation how Eowyn is able to kill the witch king when Aragorn, the river Bruinen and Gandalph previously failed.

Aragorn is male and therefore cannot do it. Not sure why Jackson didn't let the Maiar Gandalf face off against the Witchking of Angmar, as Grand Bob said, it could've been one of the most epic stand-offs ever filmed.

No Master Gimli, I would not go through the mines of Moria unless I had no other choice. We will let the Ringbearer decide.
We will go through the mines.
Can't wait to see it, Wednesday can't get here fast enough!

Good reviewers with a critical eye who know what these issues look like will catch these problems, simple as that.

I would agree that most people dont know what DNR is, but that does not make DNR a good and acceptable thing. If you were to actualy show these people the negative impact DNR has to a film or picture and why grain is good, etc.......MOST would be against it.
