The snow scenes are really the ones I would like to see too.

But if you want a 100% honest opinion Id have to say that so far it looks like much ado about nothing.

That would be a cool tag team match.

Ken Brown & Ralph Potts vs Bill Hunt & Robert Harris.

I'd pay to see that before I pay for the EE of LOTR's.
Soooo... anyone notice how Ken CONVENIENTLY omitted a response to his big tag team title bout? Maybe we gotta wait for a press release

Anything's possible, but my display is dead on. I'm a nut about proper calibration

Besides, the screenshots are taken directly from the disc, not from my display, and show the tint as it appears.

That said, the green tint, while there throughout the film, is not nearly as obvious when the film is in motion as it is in screenshots. That doesn't mean it isn't as green or cyan on the screen, just that when watching a film in motion without points of reference (screenshot comparisons, true whites, etc) it isn't as apparent. Blues look fairly blue, whites look fairly white, and it only makes itself known during key scenes. (Even though it's there throughout.)

For those who can't see the tint, go to one of the questionable scenes and bring up your PS3 menus/icons, which feature pure white text and symbols. The difference between the whites on the PS3 overlays and the greenish-tinted whites of the film suddenly become all too obvious. Even when you can't see it as easily when the film is playing, it's easy to see when compared to something that is a truer white. Unfortunately, once you see the tint, it's difficult to unsee it afterwards. Proceed with caution

On a separate note, has anyone found a single pixel of pure white in the many, many screenshots posted? I've been scanning with photoshop, and I can't find a single pixel in a single shot that's pure white. (Even the elvish subtitles have a tint to them. Check 1:35:47 when Arwen is speaking.) Yes, Jackson may have intentionally applied a tint to the entire film and eliminated all pure white, but that would be a strange decision indeed.

Hope all of that helps clarify some of the questions that have been posted lately

For $84 and no new special features, of course people are going to scrutinize the image quality of this release. All you are basically paying for is improved picture quality and when something is amiss when you are paying that kind of money, people are understandably not going to be happy. Besides, these films are beloved by many. You better believe that if something is wrong, people are going to complain.

I just couldn't justify to myself (or my wife, haha) that $85 is worth all of those DVDs I already own, a movie with a less-than-stellar picture and the two sequels. I have been waiting for this since Dec. 2008 when I received my PS3 for Christmas, but I want the best experience possible. I think we all do. But I can stick with my DVD package for a bit longer to save myself some hard-earned bucks.

I'm hoping for a barebones release of the EE's with a bright, colorful FOTR.
I know what you mean. Upgrading is always tricky.

There is one other option for buying it cheap that I should bring up to all of you Gentleman and Ladies. Consider this: Barnes & Noble is selling the box set at 83.99 BUT they are currently running a "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" promotion this week. If one were to buy two copies of LOTR and get one free the total cost would be 167.98 before tax. But the cost divided by three would be
55.99 each.

I got together with my friends who also wanted this set and we put in an order. Maybe if those of you out there have Ring fans that are looking for the lowest price can get together and help each other out. Or maybe if you can't find anyone else, your friends right here at blu-ray.com could pair up with you and place an order. It works for me.

EDIT: Corrected!

Is it B3G1 or B2G1? Your price breakdown makes it seem more like Buy 2 Get 1 Free.

Just passing on info bro.....I dont know how long its been at that price.

What happens to the thing in ROTK that looks like he has a potato head.

Hes the thing in the battle that the castlerock comes flying at & just misses him when it lands & he spits on it.

I dont see him gettin wacked in the theatrical....is there an ending to him in the extended ?

My philosophy is to watch a film enjoy how it looks and let the errors (DNR, bad coloring, edge enhancement) FIND YOU.

Patton and Predator are examples of films in which the bad things found me.
The problem is the errors will find many of us very easy after the past week of this thread. Like Ken said once you see them its hard to not see them. I am dreading the snow scenes in particular.

Even watched fullscreen that clip looks hideous. Just as expected. The sky shining through the trees is clearly not blue but distinctly greenish. And this is not even one of the good scenes to show it off...

Yes, definitely green, but this is a scene where I could write it off as an intended grading if I didn't know.

This one looks definitely - off. I wouldn't be able to pinpoint it if I didn't know the cause but seeing this clip I'd immediately say that something is wrong with the colors, especially in the faces.

I have to admit that I had difficulty spotting the problem here. This one's clearly a scene where it isn't as intrusive. Clearly not a deal breaker.

EDIT: I just saw after writing this remarks that this clip is from one of the other films. I'm not really surprised. This scene has a slight green bias but it's not even remotely comparable to any of the other scenes. Even without knowing that it's from one of the other films I found this one the only one that didn't bother me at all. So does that prove that FOTR is defective?

I'd have to go back to my theatrical Blu-ray to double-check, but that last one looks a lot darker than I remember it looking. But, admittedly, it should be dark in there.
I'd call this one borderline. The green sure isn't offensive here - but I have to agree about the darkness. I also remember that this fight was easier to see in earlier versions.

So, nothing here that may change my opinion. Still a no-buy.

If we are only interested in watching films and nothing more, VHS should do nicely.

I think the four of us would simply pass around a bottle of Excedrin Migraine and chat about anything other than the color green. We're all interested in hearing what the studio and Jackson have to say on the matter, but I think it's safe to say we're all fairly content on waiting for the official response before climbing in any rings

The only reasons I've continued to post in the thread about the debate (rather than simply ducking, covering and hiding out until it all blows over) is 1) to try and help keep the discussion civil, 2) to try and help clarify what does and doesn't appear, in shots or in motion, and 3) to point out that both sides of the debate currently have a case, neither of which can be won until Warner or Jackson respond to the controversy. Not that I'm not enjoying reading all of your comments. It's certainly been a spirited discussion

Intentional? It very well could be. Error? It very well could be. I remain as curious as the rest of you, and just as eager for it to be over and done with as both camps are

Anyone have a clue what this will be selling for next week in B&M stores? Any ad specials?

Wait... I thought based on [s]Frogmort's[/s] suggestion last night everyone (our 4 reviewers and the general participants of this thread) were going to climb on a bed and hug :P

Edit: Whoops, looks like it was Stinky-Dinkins:

Actually, this thread has been pretty civil the last few days. Should have seen it last week, or over the weekend. Guess between Ken sticking around in the thread and a few bans/suspensions the message was sent.

Don't believe any ads have leaked yet (least none have been posted here yet), but I'm of the belief that if BB.com is going to have a price of 69.99 today for a pre-order, that given the recent trend of bb.com and pretty much all B&M's that Best Buy will have it at an ever lower price come release week -- but I have been wrong before.
