I see nothing wrong with having low expectations. Personally, low expectations tend to work out better for me and I'm usually pleasantly surprised.

There is a chance of the unaltered films coming to blruray - even under the Disney banner!

I literally just read from a guy by the name of Bob Greber, once CFO of Lucasfilm during the ROTJ period.

He states that in the final negotiations with Fox, they concluded with a few conditions that mean a LOT!

Holdouts:
1. FOX may release Star Wars on VHS after April 1, 1982 and broadcast it on network TV after February 1, 1984.
2. FOX may release Empire on VHS after October 1, 1982 and broadcast it on network TV after February 1, 1985.
3. Then the ROTJ releases, which also are for VHS and network TV broadcast.

To that, I say... go ahead and release it on VHS all you want! HAHA! Joke is on Fox! And so what if they can put it on their network tv stations, big deal.

But, the other Holdback stipulation that really struck me and i've never heard this argument from anybody else before is;
4. These holdbacks only remain "as long as Marvin Davis owns the studio (Fox)", and it is now owned by Rupert Murdoch.

So, seems like all those distribution holdbacks are gone.
Unless anyone cares to fill me in on anything i'm missing, I believe next year we will see a new Star Wars Bluray release with the unaltered versions!

I'll stick with the wonderful Lowry transfers and CG.

That is soo cool JJ is using practical and CGI but not overdoing the CGI like Lucas did in the last movies and glad Lucas is hands off as he is only a consultant for the projects.

Nice new cast i should say.

I'm not really excited either. I've been burned too many times with the prequels and what not. I'll see the movie, of course, but I'm not thinking about it much till then

Sorry Nagy but Lowry's transfers aren't wonderful.

They're riddled with tons of issues which could easily be fixed if the movies were rescanned.

Wonderful Lowry transfers...that's a joke right? Regardless of what people think of the special special 2011 editions, the PQ isn't that great.

I think Slugworth from Willie Wonka has been going around offering money to people close to the set in exchange for information and photos. It's either a stealth marketing campaign with LucasFilm leaking the material themselves, or it's someone inside the production looking to make some cash with a really crappy digital hidden camera. A while back, on the shoot of the first X-Men film, a P.A. was caught with a camera inside his baseball cap taking photos of the actors in costume and then leaking them on-line. He was promptly fired, of course. Looking at the lens distortion of the overhead lights in the Falcon shots, and the poor resolution of the images, the whole thing sure looks like somebody using a hidden camera.

Yeah well they happen to be my top 10 reference discs. And I've been doing this videophile thing for a long while. So to each his own.

So transfers which are littered with frozen film grain, wonky colour timing and heavily crushed black levels are "reference" discs?

Seriously though they could look a hell of a lot better if they got given a fresh, modern, faithfully transferred and mastered 4K scans.

Exactly. They're currently as good as they've ever looked on home video, but damn do they need an 8k or 4k remastering. The frozen grain, the inconsistent and over-saturated color timing, the crush, and finally a seriously inconsistent level of fine detail all reek of extremely dated transfers. They aren't total eyesores, but they are far from reference quality. The PT are a different story all together. TPM is just an atrocious transfer, period. AOTC isn't quite as bad but still lacks much fine detail (a shame it was shot in 1080p). ROTS looks decent enough, though. That's as close as a reference disc the Complete Saga set has.

I agree with the others, but I think ROTS is pretty reference.

I had zero excitement about the prequels...I mean it was a whole week and a half before I saw TPM in the movie theater. I knew months before it opened it was going to be a total train wreck and my expectations were confirmed.

However I am excited about this movie - why? Because JJ Abrams did such an awesome job rebooting Star Trek and, of course, the original cast are back.

The current BD discs look fine to me. Sometimes skin temperatures can look a little hot, but it's mostly in ROTJ on Tatooine which makes sense considering it's an arid climate and no doubt the sun is scorching. Otherwise, I don't have much of anything to complain about. Black levels look fine on my Panny plasma. People get way too picky about this kind of stuff. If you just sit back and watch the damn movie, it's all good. Even The Phantom Menace looks stunning to me. Aside from literally a handful of shots that were obviously softened for the 3D release, whose transfer this BD disc uses as its source, the film looks stunning, colorful, and highly detailed.

In spite of all of the flaws in the Lowry transfer, I at least would have been happy if they could have properly roto-scoped the lightsabers.

Seriously! How can a bunch of amateurs on the internet make the lightsabers look better than a major Hollywood entity??
