Lucasfilm Sets Details on Star Wars Blu-rays

LUCASFILM CONFIRMS CHANGE(S) TO BLU-RAY RELEASE (JEDI)

Aug 31, 2011 - (www.nytimes.com)
Source - Lucasfilm

Quote:
It’s an event that seems to happen in the “Star Wars” world about as often as Wookiees celebrate Life Day, and which fans await with just as much dread. New versions of George Lucas’s space-fantasy films are released, and with them come changes to the movies – alterations to audio and video, characters’ actions and even dialogue that is very different from what fans remember seeing in theaters a long time ago and far, far away.

So it goes for the latest editions of the six “Star Wars” live-action features that are being prepared for a Blu-ray home video release on Sept. 16. Previously, it was reported that the version of “Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace” included in this release would replace the puppet version of the Yoda character with a computer-generated creation. Then on Tuesday, an online report by Devin Faraci suggested a revelation almost as troubling as the news that Luke and Leia had been brother and sister all along: in a climactic scene from “Return of the Jedi,” when Darth Vader hurls the evil Emperor to his demise on the Death Star, he would now shout “No!” (In all previous versions of “Jedi,” Vader has committed this crucial deed in silence.)

On Wednesday, a press representative for Lucasfilm confirmed that this change will be included in the Blu-ray release, writing in an e-mail: “Yes — Darth says NO.”

Though it may sound like a minor detail among the millions in the “Star Wars” movies, this alteration has not sat well with many admirers of the film franchise. Among the angered fans is Simon Pegg, the “Shaun of the Dead” star and geek-culture icon, who wrote on his Twitter account that he always “loved Vader’s wordless self sacrifice” and called the change a “clueless revision.”

COMPLETE SAGA COMING TO BLU-RAY IN SEPTEMBER

Quote:
Lucasfilm has announced that "Star Wars: The Complete Saga" will be available on Blu-ray this September. You can already pre-order the three different sets it will be available in using the links below! You can also watch a trailer for the release here.

The most anticipated Blu-ray release ever -- the Star Wars Saga -- emerges from light speed this September 2011. For the first time, all six of George Lucas' epic films (Episodes I-VI) are united in one complete set. Fans worldwide are able to pre-order now with online retailers.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release Star Wars in three distinct sets to meet the needs of every Star Wars fan:

* Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray (9-disc Set includes all six films)
* Star Wars: Prequel Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set includes Episodes I-III)
* Star Wars: Original Blu-ray Trilogy (3-disc set includes Episodes IV-VI)

Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray will feature all six live-action Star Wars feature films utilizing the highest possible picture and audio presentation, along with three additional discs and more than 30 hours of extensive special features including never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes, an exploration of the exclusive Star Wars archives, and much more.

Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray will be available for $139.99 US/$179.99 CAN and the Star Wars: Trilogy Sets for $69.99 US/89.99 CAN. Pricing for each set will vary by international territory.

Flanked by a legion of his finest Imperial stormtroopers, Darth Vader himself joined Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment President Mike Dunn at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to announce the release, vowing "The forces of the Empire will be at your disposal to assure the success of this endeavor."

"The Star Wars Saga is the most anticipated Blu-ray collection since the launch of the high-def format," Dunn said. "The epic franchise pioneered sound and visual presentation in theaters and is perfectly suited to do it again in the home, with a viewing experience only possible with Blu-ray."

"With all six episodes available for the first time in one collection, this is a great way for families and home audiences to experience the complete Saga from start to finish," said Doug Yates, Vice President of Marketing, Online, Distribution, Lucasfilm Ltd. "And with the quality of high-definition, Blu-ray provides the most immersive home experience possible."

"The Star Wars franchise has been the most anticipated Blu-ray release by Amazon's customers," said Bill Carr, Vice President of Music and Video at Amazon.com. "We think that Star Wars will be incredibly popular with our customers, and we expect pre-orders to be very strong."

Pre-order Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray and the Star Wars: Trilogy Sets at Amazon.com today!

BLU-RAY RELEASE ANNOUNCED, DELETED SCENES REVEALED

August 17, 2010 - (www.FilmJunk.com)
Source - Starwars.com

Quote:
Over the weekend, George Lucas made a large group of Star Wars fans very happy by confirming that the Star Wars saga will hit Blu-ray sometime next year. At Celebration V in Orlando, where he was interviewed on stage by Jon Stewart, he revealed that all six Star Wars movies will be available in a combined box set in fall of 2011 — an announcement that was backed up by a subsequent press release issued by Lucasfilm. In addition to providing the “highest possible picture and audio presentation”, the release will also include plenty of never-before-seen bonus material. As proof of this, the audience was treated to a brand new deleted scene from Return of the Jedi showing Luke as he puts together his new lightsaber prior to entering Jabba’s palace.

Although some people were wondering if they might wait for the rumoured 3-D re-release of Star Wars in theatres before they put the movies out on Blu-ray, it only makes sense that we will probably get yet another version of the Star Wars movies on 3-D Blu-ray a couple of years from now. Still, I think high-definition transfers of the movies will be more than enough to convince most fans to buy them all over again. New bonus material is always nice as well, although it’s hard to believe that there is still stuff left in the archives for them to dig up.

Perhaps the most unfortunate thing about this release is that it doesn’t appear that you will be able to purchase the original trilogy separate from the prequels. Will you be buying Star Wars on Blu-ray next year? Check out a bootleg video of the new deleted scene embedded below (at least until Lucas’ lawyers find it).

SAGA WILL HIT BLU-RAY IN 2011

August 14, 2010 - (www.herocomplex.latimes.com)

Quote:
Big news out of Orlando, where George Lucas told the crowd at Star Wars Celebration V that all six live-action “Star Wars” films will be released next year on Blu-ray for the first time. In a press release that followed, Lucasfilm revealed that it would be a hefty boxed set “utilizing the highest possible picture and audio presentation, along with extensive special features – including documentaries, vintage behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, retrospectives and never-before-seen footage from the Lucasfilm archives.”

The scene at the Florida convention, where Lucas was joined onstage at one point by Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, was described at StarWars.com, here’s an excerpt:

“Star Wars” fans were treated to a glimpse of bonus material, in the form of a long-lost deleted scene from “Return of the Jedi.” The scene has long been talked about online — a sequence that depicts Luke Skywalker assembling his new, green-bladed lightsaber prior to infiltrating Jabba the Hutt’s palace. After completing the Jedi weapon, Luke stashes it in R2-D2′s dome. What makes the “Jedi” deleted clip so remarkable is that it made it all the way to postproduction before it was cut, so it is a rare example of a cut scene with completed visual effects and music.

Actor Mark Hamill came out to describe the scene, remarking that once again his original introduction in a “Star Wars” film was cut out (his Anchorhead introduction was, of course, cut from A New Hope). Luke’s intro is purposely played as ominous, with his face cowled in shadows and his intentions unclear.”I had the black cloak, the glove, and I thought, wow, this time around I get to be the antagonist. Little did I know I was predicting the path of the prequels,” said Hamill, noting the similarities to Luke in this scene and Anakin Skywalker’s appearance.

That deleted scene is posted on You Tube — the audience reaction is priceless — but I suspect it won’t be there for very long considering that Lucasfilm attorneys move at light speed.

[hippie voice] Alright MAAAAAAN! BUT...this being a Star Wars boxset, we'll pretty much expect a LOT of changes from the original movie. Lets just hope they don't add Greedo shooting first.

Wait, I just realised that this is old news.
