Are they even aware how pissed off customers are going to be at them for confusing them into buying a dead format?

Are they even aware when the consumer arrives at the stores that most honest sales people are telling them that it is indeed a dead format?

I keep wondering what in the world To-shit-ba be thing in continuing this format war????
Well I will give Toshiba credit on there Commercial placement .American Idol gets top rating ever session .Sony needs to buy some spots fast saving unknowing customers the headaches of Toshiba's scam.

*sigh*

I'll miss the enjoyment of looking at the Nielson numbers every Friday once HD DVD has soon disappeared.

Brilliant result this week.

If a customer is that impulsive that they would run out and buy one of these units w/o doing their research after seeing one commercial, then they deserve to be scammed.

Blu-ray Pummels HD DVD In Disc Sales

Thanks to the guys at AVS for pointing this out. Surprised no mods deleted the article yet as it might incite HD-DVD'ers to riot.

They're not going to be pissed because they're buying them as upconverters. Best Buy is giving $100 off an HD player with the pruchase of an HD TV. That means they can get the HDA3 for $49.

I guess Toshiba is playing the PS3 angle... Get two for one. "Hey get an upconverter that can also play HD movies".

Of course that argument isn't nearly as strong as, "Hey get a game system that also plays HD movies".

They piss fewer people off by marketing it as something they could use with their current collection.

The salesman at Best Buy told me that they're selling a sh!t load of Toshiba players as upconverters. They are better than current upconverters and they give people the option to get a few HD DVDs if they want.

Interesting??? Not a bad marketing plan, but still a bit comical.

We must disagree then
Unfortunately Impulse buying is the American way.Blu-ray.com members works hard for consumers everyday with post of facts helping those impulse buyers make the right move on investing money in a format.Sony should do same advertising on most popular television show letting that consumer know of what Toshiba is up to so they wont be taken like so many already have.

Default Worry not

We really do not need to worry about Toshiba selling their players on an unsuspecting market. Most people realize that HD-DVD is dead, and I believe Toshiba changing their tune to "buy our players, they upconvert DVD!" is probably the only way that they could sell through existing stock.

After existing inventory is gone, HD-DVD will quickly fade. Its happening guys, believe it!

Default BD had 85% market share last week?

Interesting article from The Hollywood Reporter:

"Net HD DVD sales, according to Nielsen, constituted only 15% of hi-def disc sales last week. And the top HD DVD seller, 'The Kingdom,' sold just 10% as many copies as the top Blu-ray Disc release, '3:10 to Yuma.'" [Link]

I guess we'll have to wait 'til the 01/07 - 01/13 figures are out.

I noticed that the front page hasn't been updated yet. The week ending on January 13th, was 85/15 blu-ray. Not that it matters anymore.

How about them heels!

I read that as well. Does that imply that Yuma sold poorly? I thought that movie was pretty good, myself.

Do the customers not realise that they already own an upconverter, i.e. their HDTV.

Universal should be looking at these numbers very closely.

The Kingdom
Released sept 07
Box Office, $47m

3:10 to Yuma
Released sept 07
Box Office, $53m

Kingdom HD DVD sales are already at 10% of new release, Yuma. Watch how well Yuma sells over the same 3 week period.
Great points. Id like to see the Day 1 and 3week totals for both these movies once we get to that mark.

I'll stop looking when either they stop publishing the comparison or the Since Inception numbers are 80/20 -- whichever happens first. (I figure once SI numbers reach 80/20 there is absolutely no reversal possible.)

It will be embarassingly awful for years. But, at least we can talk about the gradual adoption.

Yeah. We could even ask the Duddites for advice on how to do this, given that's what they've just been through. :-)

Once could argue that the PS2 is a dying format? Yes it still gets releases, but you know eventually everyhting will shift towards the ps3.
The PS2 has several thousands of games though. HDDVD doesnt.
Ps2 games (for the most part) are playable on a PS3. HDDVDs arent.

EVERYONE knows that between the PS2/PS3 the PS3 is the future. Some un-informed consumers do not realise that HDDVD is doomed.

NOT the same thing

That shouldnt be very hard. The total volume of discs sold on both formats right now is still pretty small. Once bluray's userbase increases we'll see the SI numbers change regularly.
