Default PS3 Networking Nightmare

As the title implies, I'm have networking issues. I got everything all set up and working on my computer, but when I try to connect my PS3 either wirelessly or wired my router cycles it's power and disables my internet connection. So I ask to people who had this issue and resolved it, or are just smarter then me (but thats not had to beat) what the hell do I do to fix this problem.

I have a Linksys router, model WRT54GS.

Thanks for the help people!

First question do you have any other computers connecting to your network?

Also make sure your router is set up to DCHP. And you have enough clients avail via DCHP. On the basic setup page about half-way down.

No, just my desktop and eventually the PS3.

I do have DHCP enabled, pretty much with the default settings for the router minus some security stuff (no WEP or WPA encryption).

The fact it is happening on both wired and wireless makes me think there is something wrong with the rounter. I will say Liknsys support is very good. I have had to use them in the past.

I have the same router with 2 network printers a bridge for my HT that has a 5 port hub on it along with my PS3 as well as 2 computers one wired one wireless. So I know it is more than capable.

If you find out that it is the router I would take it back and get a D-Link, I have been using one from a recommendation from our IT guy at work and it works great either way wired/wireless.

FWIW he has been phasing out all the linksys stuff at work due to reliability/connectivity problems. He uses D-link and netgear exclusively now.

My brother also dumped his lynksis for a D-link DGL-4300 ($100-130)gaming router because no matter what he did he had a NAT type 3 on his ps3. Now type 2 & no problems.
I have the much cheaper WBR-1310($30-50).

I second that. I had tons of my problems with my Linksys until it finally kicked the bucket. I'm Netgear all the way now.

my linksys 54g works fine w/ ps3 and laptop. sometimes i have to purge the router by just disconnecting the power and reconnecting. sounds like you problem is a bit deeper.

I switched to this exact model of router over the weekend from a D-link, and got the same problem, but found a fix.

1. The first step is to give your PS3 a static Ip address. All the info you need to do so should be found on your computer by running command prompt and typing "ipconfig /all". Enter the DNS server and all the other info from there it asks for, but then pick the IP address yourself, make sure it is in range of what your router is set to, I went with 192.168.1.105, unless you have more than 4 computers that number would be fine.
Next
2. On the router setting page (192.168.1.1 in the internet address bar) under port forwarding, forward ports 80, 443, 5223, 3478-3479, and 3658 to the static IP address you gave the PS3.Give the forwards a name, any you wish.Be sure to check enable beside it.
3. Still on the router settings page go to "administration" then "management" and disable UPnP

You should then be fixed and the PS3 should tell you it is a NAT2 connection
forgive me for the lack of detail as I am at work right now and do not have the page in front of me.

Goodluck, any other questions feel free to post or send me a pm

I have that router. The PS3 works fine with the WIFI. My PC is hooked up to the router as a switch. Every time someone turns the PS3 on and connects to the network, it kicks the PC off line for a moment.

Protocol: TCP? UPD? or Both? for each port. Thanks

Would this hurt the rest of the networking?

Appreciate your help!

Default PS3 Networking Nightmare

G'day all,

Forgive my ignorance but what is NAT Type 3? What does it mean? I use a wireless modem at home because every time i would use a router (wired or wireless) on my old wired modem i would constantly lose my connection. But when I was connected that way my PS3 was a NAT Type 2! Is NAT Type 3 "bad"? Thanks in advance.

NAT Type 3 is you have a problem. It has connectivity to some level, but there's a problem.

To be honest, I had no problems plug + playing my ps3 to my router [well over air]. But still looking at getting another router soon. The belkin N1 Vision looks neat.

As for the UPnP - Universal Plug & Play
It is used to manage standalone external devices. Although I'm not quite sure which specific devices use this through your router, and if your not aware either, then you have nothing it will affect.

also if hes got enough comps running off that little router its gonna cause issues also check your nat settings via the router, along with what the ps3 brings up.. might be time for a new router... Based on what hes said sounds like the routers doing overtime

On the router setting page Setup> Basic Setup
You will need to set the field "Maximum Number of DHCP Users:" to more objects than you have.

Say you set that to 15, then you can set your IP address for your PS3 anywhere from 192.168.1.101 to 192.168.1.115.

Tha Laptops and Desktop will most likely find their own IP address which will be at the start of the range 192.168.1.101 - 103.
As well the Iphone might do the same, so 105 may be safe, but if you pick 110 you will be ok for sure.
