I was wondering if there's any similar cases of releases having a related bonus film (even if in SD) on the disc, that are otherwise unavailable on the format?

I know Criterion's release of The Killers has both the 1946 and 1964 films, but that is more of a double feature release, where the 2 films are properly advertised on the front cover.

thank you
Two awesome examples that come to mind are the Criterion release of The Killing (1956) with Killer's Kiss (1955) included, and the Warner Archive release of Gaslight (1944) with the 1940 British version included.

If you're limiting it to feature films, not shorts, the list isn't anywhere near as long.

Criterion's The Lady Vanishes has Crook's Tour as an extra. The 1940 Gaslight is only SD on the WAC disc, but is available in HD on Blu-ray from BFI.

Sorry for bombarding this thread, but I don’t know where else to find a knowledgeable group of film noir fans. Bob Dylan has painted a series of film stills for a project called Deep Focus. I believe it was released in 2021.

Anywho, most of the sources have been uncovered, except this one. It’s been troubling me for months. I’ve searched high and low, but haven’t come up with anything. Does anyone recognize it?

What is the difference between the STRANGERS preview version and the final release version?

Rushed off searching for this but sadly Stolen Face comes on an extras DVD, not on Blu-ray

Is Deep Focus supposed to be a film? or a book?

It's the series of paintings.

Most have been identified, but this one has stumped most film aficionados that I've spoken to.

We're doing noir at movie night this month. My friend picked The Long Goodbye last week. This was great because I owed the film a rewatch; indeed, it is probably one of my top 100 and I didn't know that previously!

So does anyone have reason to suspect that it's up for a 4K soon? I don't like the idea that the remastered blu-ray is just color boosted.

My setup is old blu-ray era TV and a 4K player, but I still enjoy very much the rebirth that 70s films are enjoying due to the 4K format. These films look less pasty and gross, which has always been my problem with 70s era production/home video transfer relationship.

I don't suspect it will get a 4K any time soon. The negative is supposedly in very bad shape, and an IP was used for the remastered Blu-ray. And it's a fairly gauzy-shot film, so I'm not sure HOW much a 4K would benefit it. I don't think it was ever meant to be particularly tight or sharp.

I figured I'd ask here in the noir thread. I grew up with neo noir movies (I think that's how you'd classify them?) like Blade Runner, Who framed Roger rabbit, Naked lunch and eventually L.A. confidential, all movies I absolutely love. Anyway, fast forward to 15 or 20 years ago and I saw The Maltese Falcon and The Big sleep for the first time (and found them incredible). For some reason, I figured back then that film Noir were movies only with detectives, femme fatale and a murder mystery.

But digging deeper I realised that wasn't true and noir is a very vast genre and that detectives are only a small portion of it (which is what appeals to me in this case). Everytime I look up best noir films, I always stumble upon movies like Sunset boulevard, Double indemnity, the third man, etc. (all movies I enjoyed, mind you) but really, at the end of the day, what I just want to watch are movies in the vein of the ones I grew up with (which means, movies like the Maltese falcon and the Big sleep).

Any recommendations? I own The big heat (which I'm quite excited to watch, especially after having seen Glenn Ford in 3:10 to Yuma last year for the first time and dying to see more of him on screen) but I'd love to hear any recommendations (even if they haven't been released on blu ray yet, my local library owns a lot of dvd I can have easy access to) of good Film noir detective movies.

Thanks!

Laura, Murder My Sweet, D.O.A. (main character is not really a detective, but basically speedruns being one), and Lady in the Lake all come to mind.

I quite like The Big Heat, so you have a good one to watch already, fred25_Ca.

In case you want a few more:

And these two, where things deviate a bit from the typical detective story, but are very much worth seeking out (you have great Noir films that feature other sort of characters).

Both Out of the Past and Murder, My Sweet (that noirjunkie posted about) are available as part of a very affordable boxset, where all 4 films are worth watching:

---

And, if you want a couple more Neo Noir titles to watch, both featuring private detectives like you wanted, I personally love these two:

Thanks for the recommendations! I just ordered through my library Out of the past, Murder my sweet, Laura, The long goodbye and the Killers (the criterion edition that also comes with the Siegel remake, is that one any good too?).

I finally saw Night moves last year but honestly while I enjoy it, I wouln't watch it again (mind you, Gene Hackman was superb in it, like usual!).

Thanks!

Yes!
They are shot quite differently, despite being based on the same story, but both very much worth watching.

I quite like both.
