Official Film Noir on Blu-ray Thread

Anybody here know the status of the Nightmare Alley Blu-ray that Signal One in the UK was supposed to be releasing? Folks in the film's main thread are saying they haven't been able to be reached for months. Their website is still active, however.

From what I remember, they ran into some problems and significantly cut back their planned slate for 2020, but Nightmare Alley was still on the docket. But now it sounds like they might be going under.

Signal One are in effect a one man operation and took a financial hit when HMV went into administration about a year ago; there has been silence from the company for the last 6 months.

The last word on Nightmare Alley was it was due for release in Q1 2020, who knows whether it happen or not.

As regards their website I am not certain whether it still being online means its active in any meaningful sense.

It's astonishing to me that a film as significant as "Nightmare Alley" is just hanging out there in Blu-ray limbo. We get blu releases of "Highway Dragnet" and "Hoodlum Empire" but not NA? This is where I wish Muller and the FNF would step in and make sh@t happen.

Just got through Watching Twilight Time's Where the Sidewalk Ends. Wow, that has to be the best restoration of a 50s film noir that I have seen so far. Great photography by Joseph LaShelle and fine acting by Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney. Can't wait to listen to Eddie Muller's commentary on this excellent story.

I am sure seeing a John Alton shot film in 3-D in a theater would be life changing, but I am not holding my breath. A Blu-ray would be nice though.

He's been asked about it, and unfortunately, the news isn't promising. The 3-D Film Archive was initially moving toward performing a restoration, but then something happened with the rights, and they now sit with someone who apparently isn't interested. Bob has stated that he's pessimistic we'll get to see a 3-D release.

That fellow who owns the rights should bestow it upon us hard core detective fans at last!

I understand Biff Elliot is not everybody's idea of Mike Hammer!
But it's a vintage fun film. 3-D would be cool but just a legitimate release by any of the leading Blu-ray producers

I know what you're talking about. The list of awful films that have got a 4K Blu-ray release is beyond belief, but "Nightmare Alley" has still got a very respectable DVD release. There are some great films that have never even been released on DVD.

Company accounts are due with Companies House next month, we may be able to discern more after those are published. At the moment the company is still 'active', but in terms of social engagement - no activity here since August last year, and nothing on FB/Twitter since last summer.

They retained three titles when they handed the majority of their licenses back (The Razor's Edge and Firesale being the other two). We know that a commentary was recorded for NA over a year ago.

Arrow has initiated a replacement program for Black Angel, which was authored in the wrong aspect ratio.

Due to a technical glitch during the authoring of our BLACK ANGEL release, the film’s original 1.33:1 aspect ratio image was mistakenly altered to appear within a 1.28:1 ratio. This is incorrect and has resulted in a slight vertical compression to the image. The fist screen grab is from the uncorrected version and the second is the corrected version.

Our initial stock is being dispatched, so whilst we will fix this on future pressings, we will be setting up a disc replacement service for anyone who has already pre-ordered this release. The new encode is now ready so we anticipate that replacement discs will be available shortly. We will of course follow up with another post once the replacement disc programme is live so please do keep an eye on our page for updates.
