Allan Arkush has a nice little commentary on Fuller's The Crimson Kimono courtesy of Trailers from Hell
The film is available from Twilight Time, but is also included in The Noir Archive Volume 3 box set. It's also available in Indicator's Fuller at Columbia box set in the UK. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by MifuneFan; 08-24-2020 at 05:31 PM. |

The Mill Creek release of The Lady from Shanghai is currently $7.49 on Amazon. I've never seen the film, but before I pick it up I was wondering if there is an appreciable difference in the PQ of the Indicator release that makes that edition the better purchase? Thanks for any help.

Looks slightly bright but sharpness seems equal. What do you have to lose for $7.49? ![]() For US buyers, it would be hard to get the Indicator release for under $20. |

A couple of my visual favorites:
SIDE STREET (great panoramic views of downtown New York) ANGEL'S FLIGHT (1965 obscurity filmed throughout the decaying Bunker Hill neighborhood of Los Angeles and of course the titular funicular railway--not on home video, but available on You Tube for free). THE LINEUP (1958) Dandy car chase through San Francisco streets, with a hair-raising dead stop on an uncompleted portion of a freeway. |

Probably more noir stained then noir but Studio Canal are teasing on Facebook Yield to the Night (although, it could be alternatively West 11) for UK release as part of their Vintage Classics series.

Diao Yinan has now made two honest to goodness proper neo noirs, albeit with more overt social critique present than in the original classic noirs.
His first, Black Coal Thin Ice, is more languid and aimless than his followup The Wild Goode Lake but it is definitely cut from the same cloth. Both feature a convoluted mystery plot, eye popping neon lit cinematography, femme fatales, cynical lead characters and a heavy sense of fatalism hanging over everything. Also, Black Coal Thin Ice starts in 1999 but the bulk of the film is set in 2004. The timeframe is important as the socioeconomic upheaval in China around the turn of the millennium has a similar impact on the mood of this film and it characters as WWII’s socioeconomic impact did in the classic noirs. Some may find it too slow moving and opaque in its plotting, but if you are willing to stick with it, it provides quite a satisfactory and unexpected conclusion. Well Go’s blu ray is the only English friendly one in the world and while the bulk of it looks very nice, the compression does not handle the heavier digital noise that is present in some of the low light scenes all that well. The sound design in this film is also superb and is reproduced well in the lossless mix. |
