Hi all, I am looking for info on BDs for three specific movies I can't seem to find at all. They are The Big Carnival, Thieve's Highway, and The Narrow Margin. Have those titles never been put onto BD?

Thieves' Highway was available in the UK on Blu Ray. I think it may be discontinued now.

The Big Carnival is another name for Ace in the Hole, yeah? That's available through Criterion.

As far as I know, The Narrow Margin has not been released.

Got a DVD release semi-recently, in 2014.

Since it is a Warner Archive title, chances for a blu upgrade are very good.

Wait, The Big Carnival is Ace in the Hole?????? No wonder I could never find it. Is there any reason why it has two titles and there is nothing on the Criterion set that calls if The Big Carnival?

Thieves' Highway in the UK doesn't do me any good due to region coding. I need a US specific release. Is one coming soon?

I have to admit I didn't know that The Big Carnival was also Ace in the Hole until I googled it after you asked I just saw that AitH is the first result that comes up and says it is also known as The Big Carnival.

I am in Australia, and am region free, so I have the fantastic UK release of Thieves' Highway - Sorry I am not aware of plans for any other editions.

It took me forever to find Airplane! on Blu because I didn't realise it was released as Flying High! here and I wasn't really importing yet.

Foreign titles are often pretty interesting, and sometimes entertaining to read about it. The Big Carnival was Ace in the Hole's working title, but it was also used in some foreign markets too like South Africa, Chile, and Portugal, perhaps because "Ace in the Hole" doesn't really mean anything in those countries. Like in Brazil, the title was A Montanha dos 7 Abutres, which translates to The Mountain of the 7 Vultures .. In other countries like Norway, it's Dagens sensasjon, which means "Today's Sensation". In Germany and some others it' Reporter des Satans, which roughly translates to Reporter of Satan (or The Devil's Reporter) lol.

Nice interview with the co-owner of Indicator/Powerhouse Films, John Morrissey discussing the label's noir releases.

https://www.musiquemachine.com/artic...ate.php?id=543

In the exchanges, he confirms a sixth noir box set is on the way (and possibly more), but this time from a different Hollywood studio, presumably Universal:

Quote:
John: Some of the best Noir titles are from Columbia without doubt, but there are studios that were also fairly active in this genre. We do have a deal in the offing for a whole batch more with another Hollywood Studio, watch this space as the saying goes, it will be epic
Quote:
M[m]: Will there be a noir 6, and if so, can you give us any hints what it might consist of?

John: Yes there will be a Noir 6, looking likely at an Autumn release for that one. This series is from one of the other big Hollywood Studios, so strap yourself in, for lots more classic Noir films.
And he also confirms a neo-noir set is planned!

Quote:
M[m]: I know you have released a few stand-alone neo-noir releases- but any thoughts on a neo-noir boxset?

John: Yes again this is something that we have in the works, so keep an eye for future announcements.
And finally, Morrissey also confirmed some British Noir films on the way.

Quote:
M[m]: As you have a history of releasing British genre films- have you ever considered releasing a British based noir boxset?

John: Yes, very much so, we do have plans to release some British Noir films, so watch this space.

Very cool!

I’m a little sad they never got around to putting The Burglar in any of the sets though. It’s a great film, and very rewatchable for me.

Alternate titles can be interesting, especially in cases where we got a more dull one. In some cases, this extends to the art. One my favorite noirs, Conflict (1945) with Bogey and Greenstreet, is one such film. I blame the generic, forgettable title that could have easily been that of a war movie (in addition to it's 2 year delayed release) in part for why it is not as influential as it could have been.

In France, it it was called La Mort N'etait Pas Au Rendez Vous (Death Was Not on the Agenda) and they even had a cooler poster:

Compared to the main poster in the US that is just the 3 main star's heads:

The Arrow release was licensed from 20th Century Fox -- which is now Disney. It remains to be seen what plans, if any, they have for the old Fox catalog. But it doesn't look promising.

Fortunately, TCM still exists, and Thieves' Highway will be featured on Noir Alley the weekend of June 18th. Check your local listings.

For those with TCM, the Film Noir Foundation's restoration of Cy Enfield's The Argyle Secret is available to stream for another 3 or 4 days. I watched it yesterday and it is a great little film! Very stylish, smart, sometimes unexpected, and tons of noir elements. It often got a bum rap because in some senses it's similar to The Maltese Falcon, and perhaps it was inspired by it, but I think it has a lot of its own identity. The restoration also looks great. I'm assuming Flicker Alley will release it at some point like they have the other FNF restos.

I don't have cable to get TCM.

Is there any reason why Arrow didn't release it in the US previously?

And is there any reason as to why The Narrow Margin has not been released on BD at all yet?

Criterion has the rights to Thieves' Highway in the US.

After reading responses, I was curious if the "top menu" trick would work on the Arrow release of Thieves Highway. So I loaded it in a Region 'A' Panasonic player and it did work.
If you have a Panasonic player you should be able to view it.
Maybe members that own BD could test in other non-panasonic players.

Edit: After browsing below thread, it only works on Panasonic players.

Oh, okay. Hopefully it won't be too long before they release it then. Thanks.

I would love it if To The Ends Of The Earth with Dick Powell would make it to blu ray

100% with you on that, it's at the very top of my list of unreleased noirs. The only physical media release I know of is the very ropey Spanish DVD I got a few years back, the image quality is as you'd expect - horrible.

I've been hoping it might turn up in one of the Indicator Columbia noir volumes, I can only think there's some kind of rights issue for it to be MIA like it is.

Anyway, it's a terrific film, don't miss it.
