I put the series first. Then alphabetical by year the movie was released. Followed at the end by television series.

Most of the time new releases are purchased so I don't have to move the entire collection around since it's by year.

It used to be a free for all but I now just use 123 ABC and I'll never go back to having my movies unorganized.

DVD's are sort of in storage at moment since I have ripped everyone of them to my PC and can view them through the Media Server directly to the PS3.

BLU's are sort of just thrown on the shelfs at moment (only about 120 so far) but I have a 1 second clip showing a Blu Ray Logo that are place holder files for every blu ray I have so I can put those on the media server as well. This allows me to browse my collection (both blu and dvd) from the media server on screen with remote. I can then re-arrange at will on my computer how I want everything organized..

Sample Directories I have:

For movies that don't fit one of my custom directories, I sort them by decade:
1950s
1960s
1970s
1980s
1990s
2000s

For movies of some of my favorite actors I sort them in an Actor directory
ACT_Arnold Schwarzenegger
ACT_Jason Statham
ACT_Rutger Hauer

For movies belonging to a general type:
GRP_Aliens_On_Earth
GRP_Animations Japan
GRP_Animations Kids
GRP_Animations Kids Classics
GRP_Car Races & Chases
GRP_Comedy Adult
GRP_Creature Feature
GRP_Doomsday
GRP_Dragons
GRP_Fantasy
GRP_James Bond
GRP_Martial_Arts
GRP_Musicals
GRP_Pirates
GRP_Scary
GRP_Sci-Fi Space
GRP_Submarine
GRP_Super Heros
GRP_Vampires
GRP_WarMovies
GRP_Werewolves
GRP_Westerns
GRP_Zombies

I also have another TB hard drive for my TV Series type dvds and place holders again for the TV series I have on BLU.

EDIT:

Oh yeah and I am a computer programmer so I wrote a program that reads my directories/file names and creates a nice csv (comma delimited file) list of all my movies so I can import into a database and print nice lists sorted by category/year, however I want as well.

mine are separated like this:

Movies (Sequels go after the original no matter the name)
Movie Box Sets (i like to keep them separated from the individual releases, looks better imo)
TV Shows/Seasons
Music/Concerts
Wrestling

i recently converted from alphabetical to chronological by director then i just expanded it to just full blown chronological/alphabetical
took a long time i think im just going to leave it like that
all boxsets and dvds that include more than one movie are on their own shelf
tv boxsets are on a whole other shelf right next to my tv

i've recently pulled all of my daughters "little kid" movies out and separated hers on their own shelves and i did the same for x-mas and holiday movies.

the way i see it, if a movie is only watched @ a certain time of year like the santa clause movies, they don't need to be mixed in w/the general popluation!!
Die Hard and Batman Returns have to go in the Xmas collection....

I arrange by Director, in chronological order of release from left to right. Otherwise all the movies are just thrown on the shelves, aside from my Bruce Campbell collection

I have finally adjusted mine back to being just Alphabetical. I have blu's alphabetized, then regular dvd's alphabetized. It makes it easier for my wife to find a movie.

I've organized mine in 4 categories (all alphabetically)

1. Kids section (ie, Disney, Pixar)
2. Regular section
3. James Bond
4. Box Sets

I alphabetize mine, but I keep the slip cases together as I'm generating a lot of them.

I used to use Movie Collector as well but have now switched to DVDProfiler, since it has some functionalities missing in Movie Collector, like cast & crew cross-linking, automated generation of a blu-ray banner for BD's, etc. Don't get me wrong, Movie Collector is great but I found DVDP to be more complete and better suited for my needs.

As for physical storage, I've rearranged my collection in these beig groups, then alphabetically inside each group:
- Movies (includes Anime)
- Series (includes Anime)

As my collection grows, it'll probably end up being:
- Movies
- Series
- Anime (OAV, movies, etc)
- Anime (TV-series)

Alphabetical, with sequels together. Also now that I have more foreign discs I separate them by native language as well. I'm considering using binders when I move overseas, but I'll have to keep the cases boxed up. I'm just not sure how the discs will hold up in binders...
