For my 24"x36" movie posters I'm using frames I bought from Michael's. They are Studio Décor Black Studio Home frames. They are very solid MDF construction and have nice clean simple look to them. Also they are glass which is nice.

Now here's a question I have, I am looking into getting three or four 27"x40" movie posters and am wondering what would be a good option for frames for them. I could go the custom framing route but it would cost me a fair bit. My other option is to just not get those particular posters I want and get smaller 24"x36" posters for different movies instead. Not quite sure what I want to do yet.

I've tried finding 27x40 at Michaels but they all seem to have cheap plastic fronts instead of glass. I was hoping to avoid having to go the custom route since they're a common enough size but I refuse to mess with plastic fronts. I think the cost of custom framing ends up being worth it in the long run, I have plenty of custom ones and they all look fantastic and I'm glad I went with them instead of getting different posters or cheaper framing options. Go with the posters you really want and frame them right, I think you'll find it's worth it in the long run.

Glass is generally one of the more expensive parts of the frame so you probably won't find any around the $20 price range. If the poster isn't of significant value you can get away with the cheaper frames at Michael's or Aaron Brothers Framing (remember they often have coupons in the Sunday paper ads), but the cardboard backing can cause yellowing years down the road as cardboard is acidic. Talk to custom framers and at least get a price quote using standard glass, UV glass, even UV plexiglass which is lighter but offers up good clarity and protection too.

Reprints that are officially licensed are generally 24x36 inches, so what you are buying is more than likely stuff that AllPosters is just having printed themselves, I'd be surprised if they were authorized legit reprints, so many of the things sites like that offer isn't.

I have hundreds of authentic, double-sided movie posters from the mid-90's to early 2000's that I got while working for a theater chain. Anyone know the best place to sell posters? I have looked on eBay but won't get nearly what they are worth based on other auction sites I have seen.

eBay or Amazon seem to be the place or you can create a website but you will want to be as detailed as you can be with regards to the poster title, which version (Advance, Final, etc), if they are double or single sided (if you have any single sided originals), and condition which is extremely important. The problem is with so many reprints and knock offs out there it can be hard for customers to reach you since collectors will need to find you. You may have some great posters in your collection, but just be as detailed as possible, condition is key, as well as proper packaging if you start selling them as individual posters to collectors, always anticipate the abuse carriers dish out when it comes to packages. Use strong tubes and protect the ends so the poster does not shift during transit to protect the edges of the poster. I am sure some people here will be interested and will reach out so if you don't have an inventory list that will help.

You may want to contact Bruce over at emovieposter.com . They auction a ton of movie paper. according to http://www.emovieposter.com/learnmore/?page=consign they pretty much do all the work, all you have to do is send them your stuff.

That is a good option as well, there are a good auction site that specialize in posters, etc. They will probably want to know what you have so an inventory would be good to have, something I am WAY behind in completing myself.

Any recommendations to which type of frame I should get? Considering it's a double sided I want to be sure the poster doesn't get damaged.

I'd love some of the light box one's but they're so priceyyyy, eventually I'll get them!

Thanks for the input. I started an inventory by laying them out and taking a picture of each one, but it was so time consuming I ended up abandoning it. I know I will need to complete it at some point.

It really comes down to how much you want to spend. You can go the custom route from a professional framer, or you can go with a ready-made frame at Michael's Arts & Craft or Aaron Brothers Framing, etc. Those two retailers generally have coupons in the Sunday newspapers. Cheaper option going that route but not nearly the quality of when you have it professionally done. Just avoid cardboard backing, as cardboard is acidic and will stain the back of your posters over time. Use acid-free backing and UV glass if you have a lot of sunlight coming in the room where you will display them. UV plexi-glass works too, its lighter than glass. Light box frames are expensive but you can probably find some deals online. Personally everything I have that is double-sided that I have framed on my walls I had custom framed, sure lightboxes are nice and give that glow look to the posters like in the movie theaters, I just personally didn't feel I needed to go that route.

Make sure you note any creases, tears, bends, etc. in the posters. Collectors can be quite picky and rightfully so because many people display them. While no poster is perfect per say, anything that is noticeable you may want to photograph and make a note of it and then label those photos under the specific poster title. I know what you mean by it being time consuming.

I have gone the Michael's route on several posters before. I have also looked into custom framing some original one sheets that I spent some good money on, and was quoted several hundred dollars. As you said, the better, more archival materials in a frame, the more it is going to cost. If someone has posters of value, one may want to look into some more archival type ways of displaying them. As you said, the acid in many frame backings is going to destroy a poster over time. Likewise, light (natural and some man made). Several people that have spent way more than me on posters have recommended hollywoodposterframes.com for good quality archival level frames. They have 4 different levels of frames, and pretty much any size you can think of. But they arent cheap. 27x41 frames range from $110 each to $155 each. They do give a discount for multiple quantities of the same frame.

I'm not saying that anyone absolutely needs to use super expensive frames. Im definitely not saying that anyone needs to put their $20 reprint of the Scarface one sheet in a $150 frame. But if you have an original Revenge of the Jedi teaser, you may want to consider it.

Just some food for thought.

I agree but my comments were mainly in reference to his originals he wants to have framed, not reprints. But yes putting a $20 reprint in a $150 frame doesn't make much sense I always tell people for reprints dont go all out, go something cheap, since the poster has no value. Oh I had an original ROTJ signed by Mark Hamil but a collector made me an offer I couldn't refuse nearly twenty years ago and had to sell it. ;-)

I feel awful reading the prices of the frames people buy. I just usually use the really nice Walmart movie poster frames and they haven't damaged a poster yet. Sure they are cheap but the poster holds nicely and I don't plan on switching the posters out once I buy the frame. Although, I refuse to frame my Star Wars posters as I would really want a better frame lol.
