It is rare for a theater to have to send a poster back, or destroy them, that is generally a case if a poster is recalled by a studio requesting it either be taken down and then destroyed or sent back. Most of the time, when a theater is done with a poster, its generally not in the best of condition, unless you find theater employees who are very cautious about handling it and putting it up, and generally those are the employees who want the poster for themselves, or want to later sell it, etc, so they know they want to take the best possible care with it that they can. Some theaters when they are finished with the poster keep them as the theater managers will want them, and if they don't, then they generally let the employees take them. Often times, you will find a box of posters that have been taken down because they are finished with them that sit in a box with a rubber band around them (a major no-no when storing a poster) that just sit there. Technically though theaters aren't supposed to give out the posters to people who request one. Does it happen? Sure it does, but you have to be willing to find a theater that will do it. At the theater its like a chain of command, the managers get first grab, followed by the employees, and IF the theater is willing to give them out to the public, they are picked through and generally not in the best of condition, but I would imagine those who still want the poster aren't in it for the collectibility of it, just want it for the imagery, etc. Sometimes theaters also run charity auctions, I know of a few theaters every year that have Oscar night parties and they tend to auction off stuff, including some of the posters with the money going towards charities, etc. Also some areas have dedicated installers who don't work at the theater, but who work for the companies contracted by the studios, that hang the posters up, put up the cardboard displays, etc. Sometimes those installers when replacing a poster keep them, sell, them, etc. It seems the newer theaters don't tend to put up the cardboard displays, as some of them can be quite large and elaborate to display, I know of a few theaters that refuse them, and in the past have simply put them in the recycle bin when they are finished with them because they don't want to deal with breaking them down completely, etc. |

Kinsella5,
Any movie poster updates coming up? I don't know if there was a #3 but i did get #1 & #2. Also is it bad or damaging in any way to have a poster in light box. I'm assuming any type of heat from the light source will eventually fade the poster. |

Yeah update #3 will be shortly, and feature the final styles for Dark Knight Rises, Amazing Spider-Man, Magic Mike, and the Dark Knight Rises bus shelter set which consists of the three images I posted last week or so.

In my area, there are 5 local theaters. Only 1 is nice enough to give me whatever I'd like after they use it/aren't going to use it at all (once their two managers take what they want, of course). Of the others, one calls me when they put out old posters in the lobby when they are cleaning out their poster room, one will give me stuff they aren't using (depending on the manager on duty), one wants nothing to with the public and says they "send them back", and the other says I can come by Thursday nights when they change over posters (I never go since it's 50 minutes away from my house). It really is YMMV, but they don't have to give you anything. They can just throw them out. |

And yes I know they don't have to give me anything, I wasn't trying to say I was entitled to anything. The reason I was upset with the manager telling me they destroy them is because I know at least of 1 person that gets a lot of posters from there but he is completely unreasonable, trying to sell them for outrageous prices. I don't mind being told no, or a company adhering to their policies. I have a problem with someone making up a story and lying to my face. By the way, would you mind posting some pictures of your poster collection? You could either do it in this thread or in your Gallery, I know myself and others would love to see another persons collection ![]() |

No, they have all been nice and given them to me for free. Like somebody said in a previous post, I don't think they can sell them.
I was implying that you were entitled, but that's always what I tell myself when the non-cooperating theaters tell me they are going to "send them back". LOL I don't really have any pictures of my collection, most of them are rolled up. I was talking with Kinsella via PM earlier about storage options because right now, I am running out of room in my current setup (rolled up in larger tubes). I have over 100 posters and have actually done a really bad job of late keeping up with my spreadsheet that keeps track of what I own and what tubes they are in. LOL A good 95% of my collection are theatrical 27x40 DS, mostly from the past few years since that's when I've been getting them from the theaters. I sprung for some of them online because I wanted them for my collection (like the Star Wars Special Edition posters, Tron Legacy, the new Dark Knight Rises one with Batman's broken mask), but I have been really lucky to get some great stuff for free. I got all the Hunger Games posters, Prometheus, the Avengers group poster, Django Unchained, the Amazing Spider-Man, Hugo, The Artist, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Super 8, Fast Five, and a bunch more for nothing. I'm very thankful for the generosity of strangers. EDIT: I like a lot of the Mondo stuff, but I'm not in for the collecting as I am for changing out the lightboxes in my home theater. They are 27x40 lightboxes, so I mostly stick with the double-sided stuff. Last edited by Adam_WM; 06-17-2012 at 09:39 PM. |

Some of the Mondo stuff is very nice, but also can get very expensive. Also since they are screen printed and single-sided on thicker paper, putting them in a light box frame would not yield any benefits from doing so, just a standard frame, but never dry mount them or a poster of any value.

Yeah for the Disney releases (animated and live action titles), Mondo handles the sales of the standard editions and Sideshow handles the sales for the variants. I believe it is a joint venture between Mondo/Sideshow as I think Sideshow has the license for Disney so Mondo works with them on the print sales for the Disney titles.

Not a "movie poster," per se, but I just stumbled on this and I think it's absolutely amazing. Click on the image to view the artist's site. I'm seriously tempted to buy a print.

That horror poster is cool!
Mondo's "new" The Thing poster still hasn't been mentioned? Ha! Who's getting one? I had a feeling they would be reprinting Stout's Thing in a 3rd variant or something wacky like that. Guess I was on the right path. Make that money! Any opinions? Is it a must-have screen print? Do you wish it had text? Is the original one sheet the only one for you? Since they will all likely sell at the show I can't imagine the ebay price on those bad boys. Crikey! |
