Just to inform the board -

I bought two reprints + framing @ Amazon through the seller 'MovieGoods' (moviegoods.com). The latest possible arrival was supposed to be August 19th but I still have not received the package. While this is pretty poor, MovieGoods has done a good job in putting the customer first, and they have refunded me 50% of my order's total cost, and if the package still does not arrive by Thursday they will send out another with upgraded shipping. I had to do a little work for it, but I thought 50% was quite a nice gesture.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone was considering buying from them.

Regarding drymounting.

When I first got into this hobby I had a couple things custom framed at Michaels. At the time I knew nothing about drymounting and proper framing techniques, so I didn't mention anything to them about it. Do they typically drymount unless you request otherwise? Is there a way to tell if something has been drymounted just by looking from the outside or would I have to open it up?

Good question. It's hard to really say what a framer will do, etc. Some will assume you would want all the ripples, etc out of the poster and simply dry mount it for you, not realizing the collectibility of the poster, or item being framed. Others may ask you first, etc. Personally I feel all framers should ask the customer, especially since dry mounting is a permanent process and does infact devalue an original movie poster, etc. Now, if someone wanted to do it to a reprint, I can understand that, but ultimately it's something I would avoid.

To be safe you would want to open it up and check for yourself, you could possibly stare at the poster from the front and check to see if you see any air bubbles or if any minor imperfections are gone such as ripples, as most posters have slight ones, after all a movie poster is nothing more than a large piece of colored paper (using that term loosely by the way).

Here is kind of a funny/shocking story about dry mounting. A dealer that I know of, who will remain nameless, good people though, was talking to me several years ago (back in the 90's) about how they were going to start offering a way to reverse the dry mounting effect. Meaning someone could have something dry mounted, and then if they wanted, they could have the process reversed. I doubted it could be done without damaging the poster, so they decided to test it first on a movie poster. Now, any logical person would have tested it on a new release perhaps, or maybe a poster that was not popular that they had in quantity.....but no, they decided to test it with an original Empire Strikes Back recalled final style "A" (the classic Gone With The Wind style pose) and to their surprise, it destroyed the poster. I could not believe they used such an iconic and extremely valuable poster to test the process out. I just shook my head....

While I don't blame someone for buying a reprint, I don't understand why people support dealers such as MovieGoods, who are printing their reprints themselves digitally, who have been known to print up double-sided reproductions and try passing them off as originals, who do whatever they can to mislead customers, especially since they print up reprints in the 27x40 size when reprints have always been 24x36 or 27x39 inches. Who take images of rare posters from people's private collection that they have posted online, and then copy the image and make reprints out of it, even including the watermark the original owner placed on their images, etc. The list goes on and on.

When you receive your reprints, I am curious what you think of the quality. I have heard they are quite fuzzy/grainy and sometimes the colors run, probably because they are poorly made digital prints. I am curious though, what you ordered, the size, and what you paid. You don't have to share that information, but just curious if you paid their typical $30 for a 27x40 "reproduction" when in some cases, you can get the original for that price, or cheaper.

The answer is simple Kinsella5, it's because:
A) This is my first experience buying posters, and I simply don't have the time to read through over 1,300 posts to find the "optimal" way to buy posters and read through everyone's opinions/experiences with individual sellers. Heck, I even made 2 or 3 posts asking for advice in this thread and I got zero feedback. And more importantly,

B) While the collection of authentic movie posters is the hobby of choice for some, where they are willing to spend hundreds of dollars for rare items and proper care so they do not deteriorate over time, this is simply not the category I fall under. I'm a young professional that lives in an apartment who is simply trying to cover some wall space. In short, I don't care as much as the next person might.

In the short time I have been frequenting the forums I have seen a lot of your happy customers Kinsella5 and I'd like to think one day we shall do business since you seem quite adamant on the topic of posters. I'll let you know how the posters come out (I'll probably post pictures in my HT Gallery) when I receive them. As far as the cost, the posters were $10 bucks each unframed. So no they were not expensive at all.

I try my best to watch the forum here and post when someone has a question, I know others here do the same thing to help people out. When did you post your questions, if you can remember, I'd like to go back in the thread and find them. I thought I had responded to one of your postings in the past. I don't fault anyone who wants to have a reprint over an original, it is a matter of cost to some people and the fact that some may not really care between the two, and I respect that. I just don't believe in supporting those who blatantly deceive collectors/customers such as what MG does. If all you want to do is cover up some wall space, that is understandable, I just know that in some cases, you can find an original for the same cost as what MG or other dealers charge for a reprint. Yes, feel free to contact me directly here if you have any questions, I may be delayed in my response, but I will get to your questions you have.

Unfortunately I was unaware of any poor reputation they may have prior to pulling the trigger on the two posters. Not to go overboard, but here are links to a number of my posts:

First I made a thread because I overlooked the existence of this thread: Link
Then once I found this thread I did some skimming, and found people mentioning moviegoods (with neutral/positive experiences) so I checked them out. I then posted here asking why MovieGoods through Amazon was so much cheaper than direct from their site: Link
Asked again for input here: Link
Still no feedback, so I went back to my thread: Link
Finally got two responses, but by that point I made my purchase: Link

Hey Badz, a search of this thread alone resulted in 61 hits for 'moviegoods' and you can see throughout that much more limited subset a number of inquiries to moviegoods and some feedback on them.

I started the same way you have, buying some reprints of posters I really liked for 10 bucks off allposters.com. I probably would have kept moving down that path and would have been happy... until I made a back lit movie poster box... that lead me to seeking out double sided posters, which lead me to movieposter.com as their B&M store is close to me which in turn lead me into this thread which again turned me on to artist's such Tyler Stout and Danny Miller which in the end has cost me a small fortune!!! My point? Stay away from movie posters altogether, they are evil

I clicked your links, and while I didn't comment right away, I did touch on a few of your questions back on August 6th, I am not sure if you saw that, I realize sometimes even though I have the box checked to notify me when someone comments, it generally only notifies me of the first few comments and then I have to go on and look myself if anyone has commented. But I did at least touch on a few of your questions back on the 6th of this month.

Regardless, welcome to the forum, I am sure everyone is curious what you think of the posters you order from MovieGoods, who as you mentioned, do sell under the names PopCultureGraphics and MoviePosterShop.com. Personally, as I have said before, I would stay as far away from them as possible, but that decision is something everyone has to make for themselves. It's one thing to buy reprints, or originals, it's another thing to support a dealer who is known to make the reprints themselves illegally, one of the reasons they are being sued by some a few of the major movie studios. Google MovieGoods Lawsuit and you can find out the info.

Anyone who is looking for a reliable and honest movie poster seller, look no further than our own Kinsella5. Just received my DK rises poster from him today and it arrived perfectly packaged! His knowledge in the movie poster field is amazing and I will definitely be doing more business with him in the future! Thanks K5!
