Glad I'm off tomorrow because the Ken Taylor print is fantastic. Loving both the regular and variant, although I'll probably just try for the regular to help ensure I get one.

Ken Taylor consistently does quality work, with regards to Gremlins though I think Rhys Cooper did an amazing job on the one he did a few years ago with the glow-in-the-dark ink. While both the standard and variant Taylor ones will sell out fast, that variant will go really fast.

Lightbulb Lightboxes

So I have to ask you guys, does anyone have an opinion on some of the lightboxes that you can buy? I've got one type in particular I'm looking at. These seem to be sold by many retailers online, and the source is possibly 'River City Theaters' http://www.movie-theater-lightboxes....-ligh2740.html

I'm looking to maybe order a couple from 'All Movie Replicas' since they are Canadian: http://www.allmoviereplicas.com/Blac...-Lightbox.html

and I noticed MovieGoods carries these as well: http://www.moviegoods.com/frames-lightboxes.asp

Now, I've read some of your opinions on MovieGoods, Jon, at least in regards to their posters... 'nuff said... But I was just wondering if there were any opinions on these Lightboxes themselves, and possibly on allmoviereplicas.com. It's a bit of an investment so I'd like to get some feedback beforehand, so...

Anyone?

I think the ones AllMovieReplicas and River City sell are about the same, and River City appears to be cheaper. With regards to MovieGoods, personally I would not support them, not even for frames, but that is just my opinion. For a dealer to do what they do, it's beyond frustrating and collectors should feel the same way, and I can't support people like them so even if they were selling them for twenty bucks, I still would not buy from them. But again, that's just my thoughts.

@Starmartyr- I'm pretty sure you said previously your not up for a DYI project but you can do it for around a third of the price. I'm in the planning stage myself. Don't forget lumber retailers generally offer cutting services if you don't have the proper tools. Good luck either way. I did a test run with the lights I'll be using and can't believe what a difference it makes lighting them up. They really come to life.

I did make my own and the cost surprised me. In Canada the cost of supplies can be considerably higher than in the states. Plexi/lexan isn't cheap and if you need to buy a piece of plexi for diffusion it costs even more... there are certainly different builds you can do to help reduce costs... ie use rope lighting rather than fluorescent but I'm pretty sure I was up around $150 in plexi costs alone. I was gifted the light fixture I used, if I had to buy my ballasts I bet I would have been pushing $300 for my build all told.

I don't really have any input for the ones linked to by Starmartyr, but things I would look for if buying retail are whether it could be hard wired into your electrical, I prefer that clean look over a cord to an outlet... I would also look for as low profile as possible, the one link actually looks like it isn't very deep at all, which is cool... but I wonder what the light source is, which leads me to the other thing I'd look for... I'd take a fluorescent solution over LED rope light, I think they light the poster up better. I think those are the main things I would look for. That an easy way to replace the posters that don't damage them, that's important too.

I tried to build one this summer and it was starting to cost a lot of money. I'm not a good DYI guy, but just the materials and good plexi was going to make it more than I could justify to keep spending.

Thanks for the replies, all! Good input.

I do get the impression that the ultimate cost of DIY will add up fast, and beyond that is the time investment. Now that my room is 99% done I have a hard time digging in to more projects, even the last 1% is hard for me to bring myself to do.. It's just so busy these days that when I come home I just want to enjoy. Hell it took almost a year to get to this point already. I just like adding some finishing touches now.

I do hope that allmoviereplicas is legit because that may be the way I go. Looks like they are registered with the BBB which is a good sign. Since they are in Canada I wouldn't be paying the extreme shipping and duties as at other places. For the same lightboxes at a small U.S. retailer, they said they wouldn't even bother quoting me because it just wouldn't be worth it! Yikes..

For these ones, roar, they do use fluorescent lights, 2 or 4 is the choice, and you can get hardwired, bottom cord, or internal cord. So a few choices. They are 4" deep, apparently they can't really be less than that.

Displays2go.com has LED edgelit models for about the same price, and they are really low profile - Mr. Poindexter on the forums here has some of those - but the shipping and duties are killer. That took them right off the table. A shame too, since they would look really slick. But Mr. P did comment that their sizing was off, so there was white light leakage, and they refused to fix the mistake. So that's a big strike against them.

And don't worry Jon, I won't support moviegoods, I just thought it was a good example.

P.S. Jon email me some details after Christmas sometime, I want to find out more about what you carry. But no rush! I already have a bunch coming in thanks to Ripley.

It is awesome to light them up isn't it!

It's sure beats having to aim halogen spotlights at the posters, which is what I'm doing currently. It's less than ideal for many reasons - they give off too much ambient light yet they don't even light the posters properly, reflections on the glass/plexi, and last but not least - I'm using terrible frames, because to actually get these framed anywhere it's $200+, especially for frames that open up to swap posters. For that kind of money I would just put that towards lightboxes and solve all those problems. Plus again it just looks amazing, it's what they were meant for!

I've seen a number of great implementations with rope lights and led's, but I just prefer the 'warmth' of the fluorescents. I have 4 in mine and I think it does a great job lighting the posters up, to go with 2 I think you'd need some go reflectors within the fixture.

4 inches makes sense when it comes to minimum depth with fluorescents. If you can counter sink it into your wall that would be ideal I think, things sitting 4 inches off a wall tend to get bumped into... at least by my kids

If they have wiring options I think that is really cool, not sure if your walls are still open from behind or not but I think hardwired gives the best appearance if you can accommodate it.

As far as getting an idea of what inventory Jon has... take a number... we are all waiting for that email from Jon I think he's been working on that for as long as I've been posting in this thread.

Ah, gotcha. Well I just may have to go for the 4 bulb version, it's $95 more. But great to hear your impressions on it. Good point on the depth, though I don't think it will really be an issue. We don't have kids and I don't plan to soon Unfortunately though I can't countersink them where I am currently -thay are on an outside wall in the basement. At another place it would be great to do that. Regardless, I do have a good electrician that can hardwire them with little issue.

I guess with Jon a person would usually have an idea of what they want and request it. Unfortunately for me, I'm more of a browser, and I don't always know what I want until I see it!

Well for $95 maybe 2 lights is enough Especially if you are going to buy more than one of these.

As far as poster shopping goes, I'd recommend checking out movieposter.com. They have a shop in Toronto that I've been to numerous times, their prices are pretty fair on a lot of their inventory and what appears to be crazy high on others. What I usually do is check there first and if they have a new release for the $20 - $25 I'll take a ride out there and pick it up, if they want more than that I drop Jon a line and see if he has what I'm looking for. He always gets back to me no questions asks with a great price and a quote for shipping. What I have received from him was some of the best packaging I've ever gotten... it would certainly top Movieposter.com's, not that theirs is bad, Jon's is just better. Anyway, browse their site, see what you like and pop him a PM, can't hurt anyway you look at it.

I'm debating that too. But you never know.. usually if I'm in for a penny, I'm in for a pound type of thing.

That's a good idea, since movieposter.com has pretty much everything online, but like you say some of the prices are way out to lunch. So I can go that way. Thanks!

I elected to sleep in, was up too late working online and being extremely behind (as many of you know), buying this print wasn't a priority for me. But congrats to those that did manage to get one to add to their collections!

Ultimately anyone can support any retailer they want, I don't support them because of their tactics and the fact that the majority of their stuff isn't authentic yet they produce reprints in the same size as originals (27x40 inches) which only confuses collectors both new and old.

Regarding everything I have, its going to be a while, even as Roar pointed out (LOL), a lot of people have been waiting a long time. Its been a slow process getting all caught up with everything but it's one of my many New Year resolutions to get inventory numbers correct, and back to where I was a few years ago with balancing the Force in my life. I have let down plenty on the Jedi Council and my padawan learners.

Even though I should not laugh, it was hard not to because you are so right. I think its been longer though, I think I fell off the poster bandwagon with regards to maintaining inventory and my regular communications over three years ago. But I am making strides, slow that they are.

LOL! Oh I know you were, its all good, but you were correct in your post, I will admit that. I am trying to find Underworld, I have not given up on it. Dark Knight Rises advance "B" (the new Bane style) "should" be arriving today.
