I do agree that many people get caught up on the US market as base for everything. Streaming has a long way to go when it comes to taking over physical ownership of the movie.

People mention music as an example of how streaming and digital only works. In Itunes, you do not own your music and when you die, it legally can not be passed on to your kids or family etc. The same time of thing would happen in the US.
No we don't have access to Amazon Prime here. Other than iTunes (which content is priced differently to the U.S), this is pretty much all we have available to us.

I am not talking netflix I am talking the very latest releases.

We have lovefilm which I think is owned by amazon. However, you don't get the very latest rentals for streaming.

here in Canada Amazon.ca offers prime (the mail portion) but there is no film DL associated with it (or even without it).

What you need to understand is that film distribution rights are locked in by country. So Amazon is paying $$$$ for US rights to the film but that means they are locked in to US distribution. Netflix might exist in the US, UK and Canada (and I think in a few other places) but each one is different with a different film selection depending on what studio they negotiated with and what films they got the distribution rights ( what I mean is that , for example Dredd in the US is Lionsgate, in Canada it is Alliance films and in the UK it is Entertainment in Video, so if Netflix wants it on all three of its places it needs to buy the rights from all three of those studios for each one of them)
That is why things will always be different (be it Amazon or Netflix) across borders.

Here in Australia there are very few companies who offer such services and they are very small with much less content compared with Netflix and other U.S providers. It costs about $6-$8 per film you stream here. This is why these topics are stupid, because the majority of members who think streaming is going to take over don't look at the big picture, they base everything they say on the U.S market, like it's the same worldwide.
They don't even base it on the US Market, merely a very small segment of it.

Because the majority of the US has awful internet speeds.

It doesn't matter what the cost is to stream content in the US either since the necessarily infrastructure isn't available to support the majority of the users in the US. There are bandwidth limitations as well as bandwidth caps so forget about streaming 1080p w/ lossless audio. Although streaming may be popular in the US I's say it's more of a niche market at the moment. Now if everyone in the US wanted to stream the internet providers would have issues delivering said content based on the current infrastructure.

Unless streaming and download can always offer CC or extras, I'll keep buying physical media.

We face the same challenges here but worse.

I just watched a downloaded movie on iTunes this evening. I have to say, the quality was excellent, there was no fuss no muss on the download, no issues with the sound either. The more and more I use iTunes, the more I realize that purchasing physical media will become a very distant thing of the past, maybe not for collecting movie but no doubt whatsoever for renting movies. I don't think downloading is going to be a niche market, I feel I got my money's worth for what I spent.

The movie I watched was the 80s movie Running Scared in 720p

Yep I had a co-worker ask me why do I buy movies and I told him for the price to own a streaming movie which is about the same as the physical media I rather get the Blu-ray because I get extras and stuff like that.

I doesn't have to be one thing or the other. Streaming will replace the rental market. I hope House of Cards, that Netflix Kevin Spacey series, is a hit, because I think streaming could be an alternative for episodic TV. A lot of people get their Walking Dead that way, don't they?

Why not rent the movie via streaming and, at the end, have the chance to buy the movie you just watched? No reason the two can't be combined into a single business model.

Quick comment, I posted a thread just like this in 2009 and was almost kicked off for suggesting such a thing.

Sorry, but in my opinion, anyone who genuinely loves movies will collect bluray. I like to re-watch my movies. If I did that with rental it runs very expensive.
Settling for something like iTunes hd when I am used to bluray would be like eating an economy burger when I am used to steak.

Bluray forever

you watched in 720p? and basically you're saying "it's good ENOUGH". that's a frightening thought for film fans everywhere

Agree 1 million percent. I sometimes wonder why some people even bother coming on a bluray forum.

If you mean frightening in that completely unimportant 'what do I really care' sort of way then yes, the thought of some guy I don't even know watching Running Scared in 720p is downright terrifying.

I won't buy a movie just for the extras - if I don't like the movie, I won't buy it. But I really like the extras as I like to know the behind the scenes stuff - how effects were done, why they decided to do A instead of B, etc. For example, TNG remastered Season 1 is great as you get to see makeup tests for the characters to see what other options they were looking at. I find that stuff intersting and the audio commentaries are something I miss on Netflix. From a technical standpoint, there is no reason that you can't have have it on streaming as most have multiple audio tracks. it is just a financial thing and I think if streaming really does start to take over, that is something they will need to start including.
