Here's a fun article for all of you here in the Twilight Time thread...

A new book, CRUSH: Writers Reflect on Love, Longing and the Lasting Power of Their First Celebrity Crush includes the following Stephen King essay about Kim Novak in the movie, Picnic.

(I don't read Harper's Bazaar magazine in particular, but this showed up on Stephen King's Facebook page today.)

But back in March 2014, and again in March 2015, Twilight Time and Screen Archives Entertainment held sales in honor of TT's third and fourth anniversaries. In both cases, they offered selected titles (the slower-selling ones) for $10 off the regular price. In 2014, they offered 36 titles at this discount price, one for each month TT had been in business. In 2015, they offered 96 titles (two for every month they'd been in business).

Whether they have a fifth anniversary sale this month or not is unknown. The previous two times they didn't give a lot of notice, presumably because they didn't want to kill sales completely in the meantime. The 2014 sale started on March 19, and the 2015 sale started on March 25.

Screen Archives also did a TT sale (same discounts) this past Nov/Dec. I don't recall if they ever gave a reason for it, but I assume it was an extended Black Friday thing. They offered the sale price on 60 selected TT titles.

On edit: I should mention that the sales don't include recent releases (if there's a sale later this month, I wouldn't count on anything released this January or later to be offered). So you'd be fairly safe buying anything released this year. The sales also don't include titles on their Low Quantity Alert list, so if you want any of those, you shouldn't wait for the sale. You can find the LQA list in post #1 of this thread.

On edit again: It's possible that the LQA titles that are still up around a thousand or more -- Mysterious Island, Zardoz, and Vampires -- would be included in a hypothetical upcoming sale, but I wouldn't count on it.

And......if you are going to tell the story tell all of it. Tell about the biggest shipping debacle in The history of the DVDs/ BD medium ( although technically not TT fault). Hopefully that would never happen again.

Stop eating fans. Not only do we want them around to buy TT movies, eating them is in bad taste. You don't need to watch any more Stephen King movies.

No, packaging looked fine, not damaged at all.

I can't tell anyone about that, as I didn't experience it. I placed two orders with SAE during last year's sale (15 titles in total). One of the orders shipped within a week, and I got it within a couple of days of that. The other took about three weeks to ship, but that's because it included a pre-order title that streeted just a couple of days before the order was shipped. And again, I got the order within a couple of days of it shipping.

So, I had no complaints.

So I just watched the Fabulous Baker Boys and really fell in love with it (Jeff Bridges is probably my favorite working actor today), but I wouldn't have watched it if it wasn't on my 'should I buy from Twilight Time' list.

Can anyone point me in the other directions for lesser known gems?

Hoping to compile a list of 4-5 movies to buy if they do a sale soon.

I would recommend State of Grace 1990. The movie is a highly underrated crime drama with perhaps Gary Oldman's best performance. The transfer is great (not excellent) and the commentary with the Director (Rattle & Hum's Phil Joanou) is really well done. You also get an isolated Ennio Morricone score.

I also highly recommend Sense and Sensibility 1995. It has one of the best transfers I have ever seen on the format and is an absolutely lovely film.

I'm sure I could think of a lot more, but those were the two that sprung to mind right away from Twilight Time.

Anyone have a clue which Harryhausen bd TT will release later this year? I'm not sure....I hope it's One Million Years, B.C. but think it's The 3 Worlds of Gulliver. Whichever one isn't released this year will probably come next year I would think.

In all fairness to SAE, those problems were nowhere near as bad during the holiday sale this past December. I placed two rather large orders during that sale, and neither one was what I'd consider late getting to me, so I think it's very safe to say they've learned from the experience.

Also, SAE did have a 20% off coupon code for a few days back in January, and it applied to all titles. "The Last Detail", "Bound For Glory" and "Hawaii" were all new releases then, and I was able to get all three at the reduced price using the code.

Pure hyperbole. SAE are a small company. Are they slow in getting things out compared to the lightning like speed of a company like Amazon? Absolutely. Apart from that, I didn't see any reports from masses of people of orders going missing, orders not being fulfilled outright, orders being sent to the wrong address, orders being packaged incorrectly, or any other combo of these that would constitute a "debacle".

People aren't realistic about shipping from small outfits or individuals. Every time I sell on ebay I get angry emails when people don't get their packages in 2 or 3 days. They have no patience or understanding.

I've ordered many times from SAE and have always received my order in good condition and within a reasonable time frame.

I must say, though, that everytime I've ordered directly from TT's website, the order shipped out the next day and I've received it within 3 days.

People forget what it was like back in the day when you'd order something by mail and be told to expect to wait 4-6 weeks for delivery. Then you'd be like Ralphie in a Christmas Story, eagerly checking the mailbox every day for your Little Orphan Annie decoder kit.
