I'm wondering how fast Chilly Scenes of Winter is going to sell out. I'll probably end up pre-ordering it tomorrow, along with Kiss of Death and Edge of Eternity, but it's not a priority like those other two films are, and I'd rather buy it for a discount price later on. It's always best not to take a chance, though.

"Chilly Scenes of Winter" is one I would imagine will stay around for a long, long while. It only has around 600 votes on IMDB as a reference point. It's a great film though.

Chilly Scenes of Winter won't sell out until it's one of those 50% off titles. That's not a comment on its quality as a film, but it's an obscure drama with no star power. If it's not a priority, it would be throwing money away to buy it at full price.

The only recent title that I was worried might sell out before it ever hits a sale price is "9 to 5". And if it does, it does. I like it, but it wouldn't feel like a big gap in my collection (not like a missing Scorsese movie). And I think that, now that TT sales have become more regular, people are getting more picky about when they'll actually buy their titles.

I agree with everyone about Chilly Scenes of Winter. It's going to stay around a while. It's getting more and more difficult for TT to have a title sell out immediately, even at just 3,000 copies.

Not that I am complaining but Twilight Time and SAE are kind of risking their model with all these sales. After getting a ton of releases the last few months for $10-15 I find it very hard to pull the trigger at $30 for something I want like Boxcar Bertha.

Looks like Screen Archives are selling their preorders tomorrow for $24.95. Limited quantities and time.

I was planning on ordering Kiss of Death anyway so this is an unexpected bonus.

This is an interesting turn of events. I never thought I'd see the day when TT or SAE would sell their movies at under $25 on release day. Is there more of a competition between the two or maybe just a sign of the times to make sure they move product quicker?

Yep. I got the email too. The email declared Chilly Scenes of Winter, Edge of Eternity, Interiors, and Kiss of Death will all be $24.95 at 4pm EDT tomorrow (Feb. 1st) exclusively on Screen Archives' website.

The email does say, "Promotion ends February 7th at Midnight EDT. Each title has only a limited quantity available at the promotional discount. Once these are sold out, remaining titles will be at $29.95".

The sales probably taught them it's nice to actually move product.

Well it must be a tough path to negotiate sometimes. They come up with a $30 price tag in order to make some profit from their business. Of course, many people can't / won't pay that much for a blu-ray. So in order to get stock moving, they offer some sales, promos, discounts, etc. But then this not only gets people thinking it's wiser to wait for a sale before purchasing titles they want, but also clears out the backlog of titles they'd been wanting to get but couldn't / wouldn't at the higher price. Could be why they've dropped from 5 to 4 new releases per month now.

Obviously, they are trying to sweeten the deal by offering these blu ray releases at a price that's more competitive with some of the more general blu ray releases. I don't think it's a coincidence that the last couple of sales seem to reflect a new found thinking that there is maybe a need for lower prices to increase their sales, otherwise, I think they've learned that they will have inventory collecting dust until the next rummage sale is held to clear out old inventory.

By the way, I just snagged a copy of "Chilly Scenes of Winter" at the lower price. Looking forward to seeing it on blu ray.

They're definitely between a rock and a hard place. Shout and Arrow can undercut them on price and beat them on transfer and features because the movies Shout and Arrow do sell way more copies. Twilight Time purposely gets the stuff that sells super slowly and no one else wants, with rare exceptions like The Blob. However people are still going to say "why am I paying $35 for a bare-bones older master of X when Arrow just released a 4k remaster of To Live and Die in LA with a ton of new features and a booklet for $15?"

I'm not really sure what the answer is honestly.

More pointedly, it taught them the value of moving product early rather than holding it in inventory for three years, then selling it as at a loss. I think this pre-order discount is a great idea to incentivize the early-birds. I hope they do this with all the pre-orders.

Better to give up $5 at the beginning than $10-20 a couple of years later and have the inventory sit there in the meantime.
