Speaking of Duvall, Bridges co-star, I found Tender Mercies to be a much more thoughtful and subtle examination of alcoholism. |

Screened this the other evening. My god, frighteningly autobiographical. Like watching real life. Still one of my favorites, but hits way, way, way too close to home. Ages well but not in a good way, unfortunately.

It's two guys, one's got an eyepatch and shit and likes to get faded a lot. There are also two chicks, both are pretty hot, and some rich dude. They do stuff and, uh, it's cool I guess. Nothing great, I dunno, but nothing bad, ya know. Thats Cutterz Way.

Speaking of the Bridges clan, TT has a film with a fine performance by brother Beau Bridges going up for preorder tomorrow, namely THE INCIDENT (1967).

Checked out the BD of Paul Mazursky's great "Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice" last night. The film tells the story of two couples, Bob and Carol (Robert Culp and Natalie Wood) and Ted and Alice (Elliott Gould and Dyan Cannon). Bob is a documentary filmmaker, who attends a retreat in Northern California while Carol joins him. It's a retreat disguised as, "Hey, come find yourself" that's actually a "Hey, sex is fun. Have as much sex as possible with as many people as you can," retreat. Bob and Carol are both affected by their experience and soon subscribe to the philosophy of free love and desire having sex with other partners. They try to get Ted and Alice in on the fun, but both resist initially. However, Ted and Alice soon want to try the new lifestyle, but, eventually, all of them find out they aren't as cut out for the free love lifestyle as they initially thought.
The four main leads are all fantastic in this. Culp is ultra-confident and is of the mindset that, "I can f**k around and have a great wife at home, but she better not do it to me." Wood is slowly testing Culp, aware that he's naive of the power that she has on men and eager to use it. Gould is curious, but somewhat torn between the tempting free-love philosophy and his devotion to his wife. Cannon is more conservative in nature, not comfortable with what Bob and Carol are espousing, but reluctant to be left behind and be deemed prudish or old-fashioned. It's a wonderful film. It intelligently comments on how people often want to keep up with current trends even if it's not in their true nature. It also is a very bold commentary on sex and the difference between physical and emotional attraction. Natalie Wood and Dyan Cannon, circa 1969, were both impossibly beautiful women. You can't take your eyes off of them. But Culp and Gould's characters, both flawed men, are tempted to stray because there is this possibility that something greater and more sexually adventurous could be out there. I read that this film was the top-grossing film of 1969. Think about how much things have changed. A small, dialogue-based film with swinging and partner-swapping at the center was the top-grossing film of 1969. This film would be lucky to make a million at the box office today, unfortunately. This is Paul Mazursky's debut film and he shows the ability he displayed throughout the 70s and early 80s. His filmography is sorely under-represented on Blu-Ray. Hopefully, we will eventually see BDs of some of his other films like "Blume in Love", "Harry and Tonto", "Next Stop, Greenwich Village", "An Unmarried Woman", and "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" at some point. This BD features a top-notch transfer as well. Last edited by mja345; 02-07-2018 at 05:57 AM. |

You're right. This was #5. I must have misread something or gotten bad info. But "Easy Rider", "Midnight Cowboy", and this film were three of the top five. That's insane when you think about it.

It's definitely depressing to see how the masses' tastes have changed for the worse.
