I would not be surprised if The Birth of a Nation were a quick sell-out. I would imagine, for example, that every film class would want a copy.

Let's hope that the classes already have the Kino version . I mean I will be placing a pre-order on May 9th which will be the first time I've ever done so for a TT film.

Any difference between the TT and the BFI?

It's one I always feel like I should at least watch, but I struggle with silent films and that runtime is daunting.

No for the first question. As mentioned before this is a very racist film even for the day and is probably not one you will be going back to very often for rewatches. So if you struggle with silent films you might have a problem struggling to watch.

But its an important film understanding how movies for the reason The Great Owl quoted some posts back. I'll just leave an excerpt from Ebert:

Quote:
To understand "The Birth of a Nation" we must first understand the difference between what we bring to the film, and what the film brings to us. All serious moviegoers must sooner or later arrive at a point where they see a film for what it is, and not simply for what they feel about it. "The Birth of a Nation" is not a bad film because it argues for evil. Like Riefenstahl’s “The Triumph of the Will,” it is a great film that argues for evil. To understand how it does so is to learn a great deal about film, and even something about evil.

I've preordered NEXT STOP GREENWICH VILLAGE and HILDA CRANE.

HILDA CRANE is a blind-buy for me. I tend to like the overheated 1950's melodramatic "women's pictures" genre, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I also pre-ordered The Birth of a Nation this afternoon. I've not seen it before, but as a cinephile, I feel like I definitely should.

Spend 120$ or more on TT titles at SAE to get an autographed copy of “The Incident” signed by director Larry Peerce.

I ordered Hilda Crane and Next Stop. I already have the BFI issue of Birth of a Nation that is the same version as TT's and I highly recommend it. Best version I've ever seen with great extras that put the film in its proper context.

Watching Criterion's superb release of Rebecca last night, I was reminded that TT released My Cousin Rachel recently - also an adaptation of a Daphne du Maurier story, with some similar themes and settings. I've not seen the film and am now very keen to. Anyone pick up a copy of yet and care to share their thoughts? Thanks.

I was just watching The Fortune Cookie on TCM. It was one of Wilder's best IMO. Matthau and Lemmon had me crying out loud laughing. This is a film I wanted to get but wanted to see it first and will be one I will get when I have the chance.
