On another note . I was looking at the SAE site looking at titles to possibly get and I just notices The Twilight Samurai is gone . Looks like it just Sold Out . Only others I know are low for sure is Guess who's coming to dinner only 11 & Roots of heaven is 18. I would not be shocked if Stormy Weather , The train & Hawaii , Flaming star & Vanishing sell out as well . |

Just made my first TT order of Cutter's Way, Chilly Scenes of Winter, and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia. I thought I was going to make it past Christmas but I keep faltering. Really looking forward to seeing these.

Haven't seen Chilly Scenes and I wasn't a big fan of Alfredo Garcia, but you'll feel like Christmas all over again when you watch Cutter's Way.

"Chilly Scenes of Winter" is a great film. You don't like "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia"? Just out of curiosity, why?

My reaction was just "meh"; didn't outright hate it like I did The Killer Elite. I'd put it on par with Major Dundee. Other than that Peckinpah is gold in my book (still need to pick up Cross of Iron, which I haven't seen.) |

Pleased to hear that you're a fan of Cross of Iron; I'm bummed by the reports of an aggressive "green push" on the Blu, but it's probably the best we're going to get for a while. |

Got a cart with Edge of Eternity, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and Don't Bother to Knock. Tossing up whether to add The Hot Rock or remove Don't Bother to Knock and wait for another sale.
$10 shipping per order plus a per-item charge makes these decisions difficult. |

What decision you make, add The Hot Rock.

It's definitely on my list, the question is whether I wait for a later sale...pretty sure it and Don't Bother are both Fox, so even a Fox sale would do. Just not sure if the price is likely to drop enough to make the extra shipping charge worthwhile.

With international shipping, there's a $10 fee per order plus a couple of bucks per item. Edge of Eternity and Where the Sidewalk Ends have been out a while, so I was going to grab them. Figured I might as well get Don't Bother to Knock as unless it hits $9.99 it's cheaper to get it now, and even at that price point it works out even. Then the discussion about The Hot Rock started up here, and it went on my list. So now it's just a question of the odds of there being a decrease of $11 or more between the two films. Then again the flat $10 fee for two movies seems bloody high, anyway... |

I remember Cross if Iron being pretty average but then war drama ain't really my thing. I'm sure for those into its setting and themes it works a lot better. That's why film quality is subjective, etc. etc.
Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is Peckinpah's masterpiece for moi, with Straw Dogs right behind it. |

For anybody on the fence about Chato's Land, here's what I had to say about it in the past:
Chato's Land is an excellent (albeit brutal and unsparing) western that belies Winner's reputation as a hack filmmaker (frankly, one I've never fully gotten.) Charles Bronson, at the age of 52, is as imposing and implacable as ever as the eponymous half-breed who slowly turns the tables on his bigoted pursuers in a hellish, alien landscape which he's adopted as his home. The posse is led by the inimitable Jack Palance and is a veritable "who's who" of character actors, including Simon Oakland (a real standout as a vile brute who gradually usurps Palance's crumbling command), James Whitmore, Ralph Waite, Richard Jordan and Victor French. The stark, inhospitable landscape that slowly devours the doomed vigilantes is an impressive character in its own right and there's some standout scenes of carnage, including a live rattlesnake being used as a boomerang to some poor sap's face. TT's disc contains a nice little interview with Gerald Wilson, the screenwriter whose work would later be echoed in Death Hunt (another awesome Chuck manhunt movie, this time gamely opposed by Lee Marvin in the rugged Yukon) and First Blood. The TT disc is a massive improvement over MGM's abysmal DVD and is more than worth $15. For my money it's easily one of Chuck's better "late" movies and one of the more standout westerns of the 70s. |
