Pre-order date: Wednesday, January 9th at 4 pm EST.

In glorious CinemaScope, from a brand new 4K transfer.

Quote:
Feel the thunderous impact of a mammoth-scaled romantic action epic – marking Tyrone Power’s final film under his long-term Twentieth Century Fox contract after becoming a star there 19 years earlier – in an all-new 4K restoration transfer showing off stunning location lensing in Ireland and South Africa and an equally spectacular Franz Waxman score! Susan Hayward, Richard Egan, Agnes Moorehead and Rita Moreno also star in this undersung Cinemascope rouser.

Based on the novel by Helga Moray about the adventures of her Irish grandmother who emigrated to South Africa and joined the Boers during the last phase of the Great Trek.

Directed by Henry King (Twelve O-Clock High, Captain from Castile, The Song of Bernadette, Love is a Many-Splendored Thing, King of the Khyber Rifles, The Gunfighter, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, The Bravados, and many more). King directed over 100 films, many from the silent era.

Starring:

Tyrone Power (The Black Swan, The Mark of Zorro, Witness for the Prosecution, Nightmare Alley, The Razor's Edge, Captain from Castile, and many more )

Susan Hayward (I Want to Live, Garden of Evil, The Lusty Men, The Snows of Kilimanjaro, Rawhide, Deadline at Dawn, Demetrius and the Gladiators)

Richard Egan (Violent Saturday, Demetrius and the Gladiators, The Revolt of Mamie Stover, The View from Pompey's Head, Pollyanna, The 300 Spartans)

Agnes Moorehead (Jane Eyre, The Revolt of Mamie Stover, Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, The Magnificent Ambersons, Hush...Hush... Sweet Charlotte, Citizen Kane, and 1960s TV series Bewitched)

Rita Moreno (West Side Story and other films, but mostly known for her work in television throughout the 1950s to 1990s and continuing into today)

Music by Franz Waxman, one of his best scores. Waxman scored many memorable classic films, including Sunset Boulevard, Suspicion, A Place in the Sun, Peyton Place, Rear Window, Mister Roberts, Run Silent Run Deep, My Cousin Rachel, The Furies, and many more.

Cinematography by Leo Tover, who lensed over 100 films from the silent era into the 1960s, including The Day the Earth Stood Still, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Revolt of Mamie Stover, I Walk Alone, The Heiress, Hold Back the Dawn, Blue Denim, and many more.

With “a powerful, compelling drama that hits the heart with uncanny accuracy” (Norma McLain Stoop, After Dark), “John Schlesinger has proved himself to be master director, coming up with a lush, plush, romantic entertainment” (Bernard Drew, Gannett Newspapers). This wartime invasion force on hi-def Blu-ray offers a terrific cast, a marvelous Richard Rodney Bennett score, and a new Audio Commentary conversation with co-star Chick Vennera. One of the Year’s 10 Best – Best Director (Schlesinger): National Board of Review. Best Supporting Actress (Rachel Roberts) – Best Costume Design (Shirley Russell): British Film Academy Awards.

Directed by John Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Far from the Madding Crowd, Sunday Bloody Sunday, Marathon Man, The Day of the Locust, The Falcon and the Snowman)

Starring:

Richard Gere (An Officer and a Gentleman, American Gigolo, Days of Heaven, Pretty Woman)
Lisa Eichorn (Cutter's Way, The Vanishing, and many TV series)
Vanessa Redgrave (A Man for All Seasons, Camelot, A Quiet Place in the Country, Mary Queen of Scots, Blow-Up)
William Devane (McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Rolling Thunder, Payback, Interstellar, and many TV series)

Music by Richard Rodney Bennett, whose many scores include Nicholas and Alexandra, Far from the Madding Crowd, Figures in a Landscape, Satan Never Sleeps, Billion Dollar Brain, and Murder on the Orient Express (1974).

Cinematography by Dick Bush, who lensed many familiar films, including Sorcerer, Victor Victoria, The Philadelphia Experiment, The Journey of Natty Gann, The Lair of the White Worm, Tommy, and Dracula A.D. 1972.

Rita Moreno will always be known to me as Anita in West Side Story (for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress). She also had a few starring film roles in addition to her many supporting film credits.

Or you could have phrased it "Rita Moreno: EGOT Winner" and dropped the mic right there.

I also liked her as Sister Peter Marie on "OZ".

Definitely in for the Big Fix. Love all of those private detective movies from the 70s. That's another Universal title too if I'm not mistaken. The Quiller Memorandum was a bit slow the only time I saw it, but I might be willing to give it another shot. Haven't seen the other two.

"The Big Fix" is a really good film, never expected it to hit BD. Great announcement. Nice to see "The Quiller Memorandum" getting a new 4K transfer as the Network BD looks really poor.

Disappointed to see The Big Fix on the list.

Actually, I'm alternately happy and disappointed. I'm happy it's getting a release, but very disappointed TT is the one releasing it (was hoping it would come from Kino's Uni deal).
Over priced, and they won't use the original key art, which I've always liked, for the jacket.

It'll be fall before it hits even a $20 price point.

Count me in for The Whole Town's Talking, I was hoping TT would release this mid 30s John Ford gem with Edward G Robinson and Jean Arthur. Will have to wait for a sale with The River's Edge.

I'll probably get The Big Fix day one as that's exactly the type of thing I really collect. Quiller Memorandum sounds interesting for a future sale.

Two firm favorites there - The Big Fix, which dropped off the radar for years, and finally a remastrer of the excellent Quiller Memorandum: the atrocious UK and French discs look like there's a constant snowstorm.

Default Beat the Devil Region Coding

Gents,

FYI - just wanted to post a heads up for our Region B/C members here:

Per Twilight Time, Beat the Devil is REGION A LOCKED.

Pre-order date: Wednesday, January 9th at 4 pm EST.

Quote:
For the first time on home video – and in pristine hi-def Blu-ray – comes the revelatory Sony Pictures/Film Foundation restoration of a 65-year-old cult favorite to the original form its creators intended with recovered footage and improved audio! This comical criminal affair co-produced by The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The African Queen colleagues John Huston and Humphrey Bogart adds up to “such wonderful nonsense that there isn’t a moment when the picture doesn’t take a left turn when you expect it to turn right” (The Motion Picture Guide).
Also, I am updating the Special Features for the January releases that I posted yesterday whenever Twilight Time announces them. Be sure to check those posts periodically if you are interested. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...2882&page=1505

For Beat the Devil:

Quote:
Special Features: Audio Commentary with Film Historians Lem Dobbs, Julie Kirgo, and Nick Redman / Alexander Cockburn Beat the Devil / Original Theatrical Trailer

These all look good. March might be another total Twilight Time sweep for me.

The River's Edge is one that intrigues me quite a bit. I love me some 1950s CinemaScope.

I'm happy to see a Universal film in March. I wonder how many Universal films they have in their deal.

I'm excited to see The Big Fix is coming. I never thought it would see the light of day on Blu-ray. It just made it to DVD as a DV-R.

Given what they're bringing out thus far (first Talk Radio, and now The Big Fix), I'm hoping it's a substantial amount.

More late '70s stuff like The Brink's Job and FM would be cool to see.
