I don't have to like the main characters to appreciate the film, but it helps if I at least understand their motivations. The core relationship is that between the father and the daughter which, while not exactly incestuous, is tragically unhealthy. Into this web wanders a supposedly "normal" mature woman. Bonjour Tristesse was a blind buy for me, and my reason for buying it was my appreciation for the beauty and talents of Deborah Kerr. Unfortunately, she is rather wasted in this. Why her character doesn't walk away slowly from these two long before the final ten minutes is never made clear to me.

I'm still not sure what the point of the film was, except to say that "the rich are different, but not in a good way." Maybe I should revisit this film again in a few years, but right now I have no desire to return to it, or even remember it.

I'm also going to say something here that might catch some flak, but here goes. It is my opinion that Jean Seberg was never a particularly good actress. She was effective in Breathless, because she wasn't asked to do much other that be "the girl." It was really Godard's and Belmondo's film. She had a certain "look" but other than that I can't think of any films of hers that showed she had more than looks. Bonjour Tristesse was no exception.
One of her better performances is in "Lilith" IMO. She's also good in a little-known thriller called "The Corruption of Chris Miller". I actually think Seberg's performance is one of the better parts of "Bonjour Tristesse". The character is this pretentious, annoying 17 year old girl who thinks she's 40 and Seberg nails it. I do agree that she and the Niven character are incredibly insufferable though.

Yes, Seberg is excellent in LILITH as a kind of spirit that some say is based on Jewish mythology. Some even feel that the film is somewhat perverse. It has early performances by Gene Hackman, Peter Fonda, and Jessica Walter. The Indicator release of the film is very good indeed. Oh, Warren Beatty is in it too.

StudioCanal wouldn't let Indicator have Devil-Ship Pirates, & I don't think TT will be releasing it (or anything else), so maybe Kino in the US.

If I didn't already have it, I certainly would. Think I will grab a few out of this sale.

I think I'll take advantage of this sale too, but what to choose.... Can anyone recommend "From the Terrace" (1960)?

Beautifully shot in wonderful cinema scope. Bit of a melodramatic schlockfest but you get early Paul Newman in all his glory and Joanne Woodward plays a real evil witch.

I wouldn't call it a classic or anything but I needed it for the collection because Newman is my favorite actor.

I'm thinking about getting seconds of some titles I already have on that list, to use as gifts. With shipping added, this probably comes to about $10 per film, which is extremely reasonable and I feel I can't pass it up.

From The Terrace
To Sir, With Love
Where The Sidewalk Ends

Already have Sidewalk in the BFI Preminger set, so will keep which ever transfer is better. Have read positives for both.

Trying to figure out what I should get. Thinking Broken Lance, Scorpio, and The Detective.

I noticed a lot of these same titles are going for $9.95 on Twilight Time's site. A little bit more than the 3-for deal, but an option if you're only interested in a single title.

Ha, now there's a coincidence----I was also thinking of getting these same three titles! (Along with three others, for a total of six.)

I already have all of the titles I'm interested in for this sale to be of any interest to me, but I wanted to throw a bone to The Detective which, while campy in some areas, is a fairly mature police drama for its time with an excellent lead performance from Sinatra.

He's aided by the ethereal and impossibly-gorgeous Lee Remick, arguably my favorite actress. As far as random, knock-you-on-your-ass movie trivia goes, the novelist's (Roderick Thorpe) follow-up novel was turned into...Die Hard.

It's a "going fast" title on TT's website, and it's more than worth picking up at that price point.

And Lloyd Bochner, who plays the slimy psychiatrist in The Detective, is the father of Hart Bochner, who plays the slimy yuppie (Ellis) in Die Hard.

Hart Bochner also played the arrogant college student Rod in Breaking Away, so there's a father and son who are both in Twilight Time titles. I can easily imagine that Rod became exactly like the slimy yuppie Ellis.

And wasn’t Die Hard at one point intended to be a Sinatra vehicle? Bringing it all back around!

In a way, yes. The novel on which Die Hard is based on is a sequel to the novel of The Detective, but by the time the writer finished it, Sinatra was obviously too old.

Good to know. I already own 18 of those titles and there's not much more from that list that I want. I might talk myself into April Love. Shirley Jones is so cute!
