One of Elvis' best films.
The first 45 rpm record (actually it was an EP) that I ever bought for myself was the songs from KID GALAHAD, with the hit "King of the Whole Wild World." I was around ten years old then. |

I watched The Boston Strangler last night for the first time and was really impressed with Tony Curtis performance. I think he nailed all the nuances of that character's
[Show spoiler] . Also, the use of different shots within the frame to tell the narrative was really cool and it inspired TV shows like 24 to do the same.

I watched "Bonjour Tristesse" recently. That movie goes from being a fairly middling dramedy for about 80 minutes to being insanely nihilistic and depressing the last 10 minutes. It's fascinating because the film seems to view the father and daughter, David Niven and Jean Seberg, at the center of the story with a degree of detached bemusement for most of the running time, particularly toward Niven's character, but then the feeling toward the two turns to absolute contempt in the final few scenes.

I think that Preminger was making the point that Seberg and Niven's characters were extremely frivolous and self-absorbed people and, for most of the running time, looks at them with a sense of amusement. Niven's character is clearly this spoiled playboy who has made his daughter into this pretentious young woman without any concept of reality. Deborah Kerr's character is attempting to instill a bit of normalcy, but they drive her away out of utter selfishness. The last shot of the film is particularly devastating. The tonal shift is jarring, but in an interesting way. The last 10-15 minutes completely changed my perception of the film.

I'm still not sure what the point of the film was, except to say that "the rich are different, but not in a good way." Maybe I should revisit this film again in a few years, but right now I have no desire to return to it, or even remember it. I'm also going to say something here that might catch some flak, but here goes. It is my opinion that Jean Seberg was never a particularly good actress. She was effective in Breathless, because she wasn't asked to do much other that be "the girl." It was really Godard's and Belmondo's film. She had a certain "look" but other than that I can't think of any films of hers that showed she had more than looks. Bonjour Tristesse was no exception. Any chance TT might release Hammer's "Devil-Ship Pirates"? Rumor has it that it could be released in a future Indicator box set.
