You used to be able to get Olive discs for under $15 each from Import CDs when they had their 10/15% off sales, but I haven't been following them since they had a site-wide price hike a year or so ago. If you keep an eye out for DD and Planet sales (and/or use a B & N coupon), they're usually under $14. Basically, look anywhere but Amazon, and you'll find reasonable Olive prices.

I just keep hoping they don't release my favorites since they usually don't come with any extras (unless you call Isolated soundtrack an extra) and there aren't any sales.

Fortunately most of the time they don't release the kind of films i love, but lately there have been a few i do want so i need to keep a look here in case something is going OOP, since i am waiting to order several at a time to minimize shipping.

And I'll argue the exact opposite... people waste WAY too much time badmouthing TT and their business model. It gets tiring to see some variant of "ugh why does TT have to release this, anybody but them!" in the threads and news releases for every TT release, when they have done a solid job on the majority of their releases. And no, I'm not a TT apologist.

Pointing out compression issues in a particular Scream disc doesn't mean that one insists/believes that all Scream titles are poorly authored, nor does applauding a notably Arrow restoration mean that one can't/won't criticize the same company for not noticing that Shivers was cut. The end result of this knee-jerk, reductive labeling is that everyone is ultimately labeled and rejected as a biased, unreliable crank, regardless of which warring faction they are simplistically stamped as a guilty, card-carrying member of, and any reasonable, valuable, level-headed analysis, whether positive or negative, is lost or ignored in the process.
Yep, that's the internet for you. I remember once I commented that I wished Scream got The Blob so it would cost less and not be limited. Then later when I mentioned I got the Blob someone said "I thought you hated TT and refused to buy it." People kind of make up these extreme versions of everything you say on the internet. It's very interesting, sociologically speaking.

That's nonsense about extras. These days most of the extras from the previous DVD releases are being included, plus TT have been adding a few of their own (mainly commentaries).

I've said in the past and I'll say it again, I don't consider myself a TT lover, but I will say I'm a TT "liker". I think they do a fantastic job considering it's pretty much a three-person operation and the product they put out is by and large excellent. The limited edition thing? Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of that only because I think everyone that wants a copy of a movie should be able to have one and I feel badly for that 3001st person who shows up, though in the two years or so that I've been buying from them I've only missed out on one title I was interested in (The Big Heat) and that was because it was on the verge of sellout right at the time I became aware of it. As for the price, yeah, that's a pain too especially because it's in US dollars so it's even heftier now with the exchange rate so I pick and choose the titles I really want to get. I still count myself among the group of people who are grateful that they're releasing so many of these titles on blu-ray that otherwise wouldn't see the light of day.

Forget the limited endtion part. The worst part is that if you get a defective or damaged disc you are SOL if they are sold out and thats a crime! They should be forced to have a small reserve for damaged, defective or lost discs. At least for a few weeks after they are sold out.

As these smaller studios licensing films for disc release becomes more and more common we are surely going to get more and more commentaries and interview videos. Those are cheap, easy to make features for a small studio like Twilight Time.

Do any other smaller distributors make their own exclusive commentary tracks?

Kino is doing them now pretty often. Criterion always did obviously. Not sure Scream has ever recorded a commentary of their own but it wouldn't surprise me, and they do interview videos all the time.

I had a defective disc (not a sold out title) and SAE sent me a replacement but it was disc only without the booklet or cover art. I can't imagine they wouldn't be doing the same thing for sold out discs, it's not like they can sell those loose discs. Has this happened to you where you were SOL on getting a replacement for a sold out disc?

I'm not familiar with a lot of their releases, but if you're referring to the recent Fright Night BD, it should be pointed out that TT had absolutely nothing to do with the two commentaries on that disc. Those commentaries were recorded a few years ago and are available from Icons of Fright for free.

Now - credit where credit's due: this recent release is the first (and only, so far) version to include said commentaries. So while they didn't have anything to do with the creation of the commentaries, at least they used them this time.

If you were, you would know that Nick Redman and Julie Kirgo have been recording commentaries for most of their other releases. That's not as chintzy as it sounds either as Redman has recorded lots of commentaries for studio released DVDs and blu-rays over the years, particularly for Sam Peckinpah films.

Oh, yeah, I remember reading about those before, now that you mention it.

I guess I draw a distinction between those and real commentaries featuring people who were actually involved with the creation of the film.

And this isn't a dig at Redman - I dislike them on other releases like the Matrix films where they have commentaries from people who had nothing to do with the films being discussed. Although I did like the Roger Ebert one on Dark City, but now we're getting way off topic.
